Aftedr upgrading to KDE 2.1, I lost the tree of modules for
configuration. I can get them through the menu individually,
but this is inconvenient.
I upgraded to mandrake 8.0 fro iso images, using LiveUpdate.
I had a few problems, but after loading some programs by hand,
I can now use my Savage 4 with Xfree4.03. There is a facility
to switch XFree in mandrake config. Very convenient!
Now, if I could just get my Kconfig program to work properly ...
Any ideas?

I had similar problems, with my Sis 630 card (up to 32M shared memory). The manual
comes along says it supports (1024x768 and up to 16M color), all kinds of efforts
as described you have been taken, but X still won't work.
With WinME, I had it set up as 1024x768 w/ 32 bit color, A-ok.
Really tired.

Well that got me on the right track. I entered the settings and it was
still failing. Determined not to give up. I was wondering what could be
going wrong. Then I decided I'd double check my IRQs. I used syschk a
dos program that I've used for years and works great. I verified that
the SCSI adapter was at IRQ11 it was. I was watching the boot up
process and noticing that my PCI nic was also trying to use IRQ11. So I
went into the BIOS and and reserved IRQ11 for ISA devices. Rebooted the
nic chose a different IRQ and all was well. Mandrake installed and this
time when I got to the SCSI config I selected the 1520 from the list it
auto detected my settings! Wow this is great. Thanx a lot for your
help. Much appreciated.

Hi,
If I try to mount the device using the mouse I get an Input/Output
Error message. If I try to mount the device using the mount command
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip100.0
I get a message that says "worng fs type or bad option or bad
superblock on hdd4 or too many mounted systems.
The mounting point exists and the drive is indeed an atapi/ide Zip
drive.
I don't have any clue!!! The ZIP drive did mount fine on RH6.2 before
I decided to upgrade to 7.1
Any help will be great!
Thanks,

i think i posted a reply to a similar question sometime back, but here goes again.
i had similar problems. i have a sis 6326, with 8mb onboard memory which is very
similar to
yours and is handled by the same "sis" driver.
the following worked for me.
for xfree 4.0.3 which is what comes with redhat 7.1:
generate the config file with "XFree86 -configure", now open the config file and in the
monitor section, go to the lines where it says horizontal refresh and vertical
refresh. if
it is not there add it. look up the format from your old config file. by default your
values
would be given as ranges such as 50.0-90.0. now take out your monitor book [lookup the
web]
and add comma separated values such as "35.5, 43.5". the horizontal/vertical values
should
corredpond. i added a couple with the first being the frequencies for my resolution
"1024x768" and then "800x600". the xfree documentation says that xfree should
successfully
probe, but since the above is the only method that workd for me, i'm thinking the
probing is
not as good as claimed.
try adding the following to the device section. they worked for me.
Option "SwCursor"
Option "NoAccel"
/* Option "NoLinear" # suggested to me, but failed. you could try */
/* driver should be sis */
post back if u still have problems and i'll try to help. i'm one person who went thru
hell
over the "sis" graphics card!!!

Subject: driver makefile and kernel headers
Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2001 07:49:02 GMT
I currently have two kernels on my system, 2.2.5 and 2.2.12. I am
currently using the 2.2.12 kernel, but the symbolic link
/usr/src/linux points to /usr/src/linux-2.2.5. I have the source for
a sound driver, and want to install it. I tried to and there were
symbol problems when I attempted to install the driver module. I
realized that the makefile was looking at the /usr/src/linux dir for
some information, i.e. the kernel version. So I changed linux link to
the kernel I am currently using (2.2.12). However, then the makefile
poops out because it cannot find the files version.h or autoconf.h
which contain info it needs. I looked and the 2.2.12 kernel tree does
not contain these files, and the 2.2.5 DOES contain these files. Any
pointers to smooth this out? Does the make clean or make mrproper I
do on the 2.2.12 kernel tree get rid of these headers? Why are they
missing?

Is it also documented? I did a regex search for \(shift\|caps?\).lock
in the Emacs info file and couldn't find a match. I also did an index
search for \<lock\> in the Emacs info file and couldn't find a match,
either. And index searching for caps only found StudlyCaps and

Mine only has F1. Maybe this works:
xmodmap -e 'keycode 67 = F1'
Maybe you need similar lines for the other F keys.

You still have to setup /etc/inittab not to run them, if you run your server
headless. Mine for example runs getty's only in runlevel 2 and 4. The

I think this is what versioning is about, you can have

2.4, the other for 2.2.

lilo has confused you /boot/map is the map of blocks that lilo uses to load
kernel, and boot message file off disk, without understanding the file
system.
/boot/System.map is a kernel thing.
I think ppl often get away with sharing map files, it probably depends what
you change in .config before the make bzImage.

I'd give them a go, most ISPs use a transparent proxy cache, explicitly
setting it is not so simple as you have to configure something, but at
least you know what's going on. The reason ppl don't like proxies, are
that some sites work poorly with them, the ISP has to maintain an exclusion
list, for sites which they shouldn't cache.
Better still ask your ISP if they run squid, or another Internet Cache
Protocol compliant proxy. Then you could run your own local proxy and
define their's as a parent.
WWWOFFLE allows offline browsing, and has support for a proxy, it may well
be your best choice. Then you have the proxy config in only one place,
rather than in several browsers, should you later change ISPs. You also
avoid reloading pages when you revisit them over a slow modem line
(shift-refresh forces a download should you need it).
Proxies are settable in browsers, now for lynx(1) the manpage has :
ENVIRONMENT
PROTOCOL_proxy Lynx supports the use of proxy servers that can act as

gateway servers (see WWW_access_GATEWAY, below). Each protocol used by
Lynx, (http, ftp, gopher, etc), can be mapped separately by setting
environment variables of the form PROTOCOL_proxy (literally: http_proxy,
ftp_proxy, gopher_proxy, etc), to "http://some.server.dom:port/". See Lynx
Users Guide for additional details and examples. WWW_access_GATEWAY Lynx
still supports use of gateway servers, with the servers specified via
"WWW_access_GATEWAY" variables (where "access" is lower case and can be
"http", "ftp", "gopher" or "wais"), however most gateway servers have been
discontinued. Note that you do not include a terminal '/' for gateways, but
do for proxies specified by PROTOCOL_proxy environment variables. See Lynx

I think you're right, why not submit an update to the LDP www.linuxdoc.org?
There's been an article recently, on troubleshooting ppp, I think it's at
O'Reilly Network, try searching for it.
