Can someone help me out? kscd plays my cd's just fine. However, when I
try to play anything using kmpg, kmidi, kmedia or x11amp, I get NO
SOUND. I've checked to see if the kernel modules are loaded, and they
are. The settings for the sb.0 module match what is suggested and what
has worked for me before.
What else is there to configure?
Frustrated,
Ron

I've got one number and two DNS IP's....Same old story. I've been browsing
newsgroups forever and reading everything I can find on websites, but
nothing.

My modem needed to be told where to operate via the jumpers, it would not
work using isapnp.conf. So now it works in Linux only, as Windows refuses
to use it if it's not PnP. Simple solution -> I grabbed a winmodem for $20
and set my other one for linux use.

Hello, I'm about to install Mandrake 7.0 + Chinese Language Extensions 0.9
I will unplug my windows 15GB drive during installation so as not to have any
accidents [IDE primary]
I will put Mandrake on IDE secondary 26GB drive and intend to boot each time into
either via a BIOS choice. Perhaps someone might
elaborate on what choices to make during this process.
Shall I devote a partition for a later different Linux distribution that I might want
to try on the side... or
can I do that any time and not regret having done it now?
I did http://www.unicore.com/bioswiz/ and it said Program: Unicore BIOS Wizard
Version 1.5
Program: Unicore Chip Detect v0.72 2000.03.10
BIOS Date: 01/22/98
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 01/22/98-SiS-5598-<SP97_V>C-00
BIOS Eval: #401A0-0106v
Chipset: SiS 5597 rev 2
Superio: Winbond 877F (use 87h) rev 0 found at port 3F0h
I suppose this means that my 26GB drive wont be a problem?... as it already can deal
with 15GB Windows drive. If I have to update
BIOS, can I do it online without paying money?
I suppose my unplugging strategy will ensure nothing gets damaged on the windows
drive... I expect I will be able to read windows
files later via a "mount" command in Linux... how about reading Linux files from
windows? Or will it all depend on how I do this
installation?
I'm Pentium 166 mhz, somebody said don't install X windows but I want to have a
standard Linux world.

Unlike FAT, it has nothing to do with partition size limits.
It's more of a performance issue. A larger block size, particularly
one related to the processor's 'natural' block size, can give you
faster reads and writes. But a larger block also wastes more space.
My /boot filesystem is small and only used during booting (and when I
run lilo). Speed is not important, size is, so that filesystem has
1024 byte blocks. My /usr partition has many large executables and
libraries on it, and is in constant use. Speed is more important, so
it uses 4096 byte blocks. Figure that half of the block size times
the number of files is wasted space. How important is that space, and
how important is speed.
You can also set the bytes/inode ratio. This indirectly sets the
limit to the number of inodes that the filesystem can hold. I usually
run out of space rather than inodes, so I bump this up. This is a
trade-off between the space used for files and the space used for
filesystem overhead. Not worth fretting over, but something you can
tweak to more closely match your actual use. You do NOT want to run
out of inodes, so don't overdo it.
The percentage of space reserved for root can be adjusted from the
default 5%. After an ordinary user fills the disk, root still has
some space to work with to clean up. The side-effect, and an
important one, is that fragmentation goes up markedly as the disk
approaches full. The reserved space helps keep the fragmentation
down.
When I upgrade disks, I take a look at the statistics for my existing
filesystems, and create the new ones based on what I find. The block
size does make a noticeable difference in speed. The bytes/inode
ratio is more of a "Why not?" tweak.

Maybe the /dev/ devices for midi, et cetera, are missing.
Look for a script which creates these devices.

Hi
this happens when your provider changes your host name.
standard its local host, and its changed to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Then X can not connect to the new host and start any application.
edit /etc/sysconfig/network
change localhost into a name you like (eq mymachine)
edit/etc/hosts
be sure it contains at least
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
127.0.0.1 mymachine.linuxfan mymachine
where linuxfan is a name you choose.
be sure /etc/host.conf contains at least:
order hosts,bind
reboot your machine

I would add that Auto-configure hostname from this IP (IP configuration tab)
should be disabled (UNchecked)

Wow, that's really unnecessary. You are too fearful. Just set up Linux
to boot to the second HD and it will leave your Windows drive or
partition alone.
I have Windows98 SE on my primary partition and Linux on a second
partition on the same drive. It's not a problem. You can even load
Windows NT or 2000 and (With VM Ware) run Linux within a virtual machine
on the same partition. Some people even load Linux from a folder in
their Windows OS, although I'm unclear on how this is done.

I don't think it can be done. Windows doesnt know how to recognize ext2
filesystems. It just labels them as Non-DOS and ignores them.

You'll need a window manager, too. The .xsession files of people who use
GNOME tend to end with:
name-of-window-manager &
exec gnome-session
fvwm, sawmill, and enlightenment are all fair enough choices, depending
on how fast your processor is, and there are loads of others.

What does your /etc/lilo.conf look like? It probably ought to start with
the line 'boot=/dev/hda'.

You might be able to get some help if you list video card, how much video
