This is really a lot of hardware manipulation to go through to alleviate
some unfounded fears.
If windows is on the primary master (/dev/hda), then just make sure that
Linux does not touch the /dev/hda device. This will leave windows
intact. If Linux is to be installed on primary slave (/dev/hdb), just
make sure that all partitions and so forth only occur on /dev/hdb.
The only thing you will need to concern yourself with is getting the
bootloader installed. Normally it will reside in the Master Boot Record
of /dev/hda, and will allow you to choose which system you want to boot
into (winders or Linux).
As far as partitioning /dev/hdb is concerned
device mount point
====== ===========
/dev/hdb1 /boot
/dev/hdb2 /
/dev/hdb3 swap
[as necessary for /home, /usr, /usr/local]
See `man lilo' to understand how to setup the bootloader.

Hi -
I am running RedHat 6.2 on a Pentium III
box and am trying to rebuild the kernel.
The 2.2.14 sources are installed in=20

Hello,
I wrote a helpfile on the 5687-02 PNP modem a couple of years ago
when I go one for Christmas. It can be configured using the
pnpdump and isapnp commands after a little editing. My
old FIC VA-503+ with a 400Mhz K6-2 gets reliable 52k
under Slack. The 5687-02 has no jumpers and is NOT
a winmodem.
Best regards,

I have the above mentioned card and cannot find the drivers for it to work.
Could someone please help me with this finding this driver and how to
install it, I am somewhat of a newbie to linux. My system is
800mhz Athlon
15gb WD drive
256mb ram
SB Live!
Ati Rage Fury Pro (32mb)
Realtek 1839 (i think that is the one)
and Redhat 6.2
I have gotten sound, mouse, and NIC to work. I just can't get the video
card to work.
thx
Brad
ps - I prefer RPM files (easier) than to compile (I don't know how)

I'm currently running an x86 based linux box and a macintosh at home.
I've got an older laserwriter (4/600) which only talks appletalk. I've
added a localtalk to ethernet bridge. I am trying to set up my x86
linux box (running mandrake 7.1) to print to the laserwriter. I've got
it to print, but I'm having a weird problem where it prints anything I
send it 5 times. It's somehow related to a permission problem I think.
I've got world read and write permissions on the spool directory. The
lpr.log file looks like this:
Aug 19 16:37:41 peecee ifpap[874]: starting for stokes
Aug 19 16:37:41 peecee ifpap[874]: accounting with psa[875]

Aug 19 16:38:19 peecee lpd[859]: lp: job could not be printed
(cfA028peecee)
It says it can't be printed, but it DOES print, and prints again and
again.
And the atalk log file (specified in /etc/printcap) looks like this:
status: Permission denied
status: Permission denied
*4255
status: Permission denied

status: Permission denied

root process
sendmail: fatal: My hostname peecee is not a fully qualified name - set
myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf

status: Permission denied
*4260
It prints fine, but it appears that there is a problem with it removing
the printed file. Why it stops after 5 tries in that case is beyond my
understanding.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Subject: Problems configuring soundcard
Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 23:41:17 GMT
Hi,
I just installed Mandrake 7.1 and I am having some problems
configuring sound for my
Soundblaster 16 - Vibra 16 card. Under Hardrake (v0.5.3) it shows the
following info for the
card :
Vendor : Creative Labs
Model : ViBRA16X
MPU01 : Yes
OPL3 : Yes
DMA2/16 : Yes
I then click on Run Configuration :
Settings are :
I/O : 220
IRQ: 7
DMA8 : 0
DMA16/2 : 5
MPU401 I/O : 330
I Click on test and Linux talks to me !!! Everything seems fine. I then
tried playing an audio
CD !!! It worked ! However I cannot play system sounds, mp3, wav, au,
etc .... I cannot under because
The test works fine and I hear the wav of Linus's voice but nothing
else except for audio CD's.
if i do cat /dev/sndstat there is not much in the file but it tells me
that the Driver is loaded as a
module. Here is more info from that file :
Kernel is 2.2.15-4mdk
Audio Devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16 <4.16> <DUPLEX>
That's about it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks,

Subject: DHCP in a firewall
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 00:41:06 GMT
Someone please tell me if this logic is faulty...
I'm setting up a router/firewall/learning linux box. It will live
between the cable modem and my Win98 boxes, if I can ever figure out
how to get to the internet through the linux box.
I use Roadrunner as an ISP. They require DHCP service, since they
don't offer static IPs. They Win98 box is setup for this. Everything
works fine on that end.
The linux box uses eth0 with DHCP. It has no problem getting an IP
from RR.
I want to use DHCP for eth1 on the linux box. This way, I don't have
to change anything for the Win98 box, except move the cat5 cable to
the cable modem to the crossover cable to eth1. This is easy enough.
Then again, do I have to change anything in the Win98 box to
understand a 192.x.x.x IP? It's used to a 24.x.x.x. I could be
reaching for straws.
I'm using two recent Linksys LNE100TX PCI ethernet cards in the linux
box. Since they are so recent, I had to upgrade to kernel 2.3.99.
The tulip driver for 2.2.x didn't work anymore. This is done.
I've got eth0 talking to roadrunner, and can get an IP and connect to
the Internet. Netscape works on the linux box.
Apparently, I've got the DHCP working for eth1. When I hook up the
cables like I'll need, I can release/renew the IP in Win98 and get an
IP from the linux box from eth1. It's as expected, according to the
'range' I setup in the /etc/dhcpd.conf file.
Big problem still. I can get the linux box talking to the internet,
and I can get an IP from eth1 for the Win98 box. I just can't talk to
the internet from the Win98 box.
In the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 file, I establish the IPADDR
as 192.168.0.1 like the firewall mini-HOWTO I downloaded suggests.
According to ifconfig, everything is cool there.
Like I said, the daemon is running, and assigns 192.168.0.2 to the
WIn98 box. What do I need to do to get the eth1 to talk to eth0?
Is this a problem with the gateway in Win98? I"m sure I'm one or two
lines of code away from completion, but I'm not sure where they go
right now.
Thanks ahead of time.
Peter

Sounds like samba is not installed. As a SU try installing Samba
rpm -UvhF samba*.rpm
Then you should be able to start samba using /usr/sbin/samba start |
restart | stop
