Not necessary, but for a lot of Windows users it's comforting.
I advice people with spare drives to do exactly this because
of the feeling of security it provides. Sadly, there is a lot
of FUD going around and if something this simple reduces the
anxiety, then what's the harm?

Subject: Telnet hanging after a few commands

My linux box: RH 6.2 (zoot) 2.2.14-5.0
My client box: Windows 2000 Pro

I can telnet into my RH box from windows using microsoft telnet or wrq
reflections telnet. Both work fine and I get to a prompt. I can usally do
one or two commands that display text back to the screen (ls, man, etc) and
the prompt is returned. I then try another command and the terminal hangs.
I have restarted both machines, reset and power down my hub, tried a
different shell, and the problem persists. I can log at the console and
everything works fine. No errors are displayed in /var/log/messages. Any
ideas how I can debug/resolve this?

Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 14:17:13 -0500

I am running RH6.2, I have installed the dhcpd & dhcpcd RPMs from the CD. I
started dhcpd from the command line & verified that it is running. I ran
dhcpcd -d and the messages log gave me the following error:

insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.o/net/tulip.o: invalid parameter parm_irq

I have a NetworkEverywhere 100 (NE100 v2) nic. I setup the adapter using the
linuxConf tool. The only parameters I entered where the adapter - eth0,
irq - 10 & driver - tulip. The documentation that came with my nic said the
tulilp driver was the one to use. The error above made me think that I had
chosen the wrong irq ... so I tried them all with no luck. The linuxConf
tool claimed that the irq was optional, but everytime I deleted the value
and activated the changes, the previous irq would appear in the dialog. Any
suggestions?

Incorrect.

Normal drive designations are controller dependant (unless specified at
boot), not weather a drive is plugged in.

hda=primary master
hdb=primary slave
hdc=secondary master
hdd=secondary slave
hde ... =additional ide controllers, etc.

Subject: help with X-win32 client software
Date: 19 Aug 2000 20:11:50 GMT

Hi Everyone,
First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their help in assisting me
learn Linux. I have been using Linux for almost 8 months now. Come
from Windows NT (MCSE+I) background. One day, I decide to give Linux
a try and fall in love with ever since. IMHO, Linux is must more stable
and robust than Microsoft Windows (crash-prone, sorry to Microsoft
Professional but that's the fact). I've learned quite a bit about Linux now
that I recommend it to my manager to implement Linux in our corporate
environment. I even learn SSH which I think is really COOL. Having say
that, now to my problem.

There are few users in our network that are still using windows. Sometimes
they would like to connect to a Linux server. The client software running
on Microsoft windows is X-win32 version 5.2. Right now I am having
problem connecting X-client (ie. X-win32) to Linux. As far as network
connectivity is concern, there is no problem. I can see all the nodes on
the network (ping works). On the Linux machine, I configure it to run xdm,
which is working fine.

On the Microsoft side, configure a session suing X-config. I connect to the
Linux server using rexec. The command line is:
/usr/bin/X11/xhost -ls -display 207.172.112.23:0.0 where 207.172.112.23
is the IP address of the Microsoft windows machine. I set window mode
in X-win32 as both. As far as the security tab in X-win32 is concern, I
don't know what I have to put there.

When I tried to connect to the Linux server with X-win32, I got the following
screen: XDMCP Host Menu from localhost.localdomain. Underneath,
I get the word LIST and 3 buttons: cancel, accept, ping. If I choose
accept, I see nothing on the screen, same with ping and cancel.

If I change to rexec, I got the following messages: connection refused.
there are no restrictions on my linux server (i.e. hosts.allow and hosts.deny).
I am at a lost now.

When I connect to the Linux Server from Microsoft Windows, which mode
should I connect? XDMP, rexec, rlogin?????? What else do I have to
configure on the Linux Server side? What do I have to configure in X-win32
for this to work? If anybody has a solution to this please send me an
email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a detail instructions to my dilema.
Bottom line, PLEASE HELP.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP AND EFFORTS......

Subject: Q: HowTo change from SCSI to IDE boot drive / /var
Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 15:22:26 -0500

I have RH6.

I know how to handle the BIOS end of it, but here's my current config:

1 9G Bootable (boot drive for Linux) SCSI disk; mostly unused, with /
and /var as the two partitions on that disk
1 30G data disk with 2G first partition that now is doing nothing

I want to take, say, Ghost and Ghost the first and second partitions
(/ and /var) on the SCSI disk and then put them (copy the partitions
with Ghost) onto the 2G IDE partition (/ and /var; the 28G rest of the
disk would stay as it is - a Linux data share).

Spacewise, it will work.
Ghostwise, it will work.

Now, what do I need to worry about? I'm worried that the kernel is
used to booting via SCSI and will go into a kernel panic as soon as it
notices there's no more SCSI boot drives around (I'd do the ghosting
then remove the SCSI stuff from the PC). And I'm worried Lilo will be
endlessly confused - how do I boot up after I've done this??

I can worry about the renumbered *data* partitions later (hda7, for
example, is my ~28G main Linux data share...)

I need to reclaim the SCSI adapter (and SCSI CDRW, and the 9G drive
too) for another PC, so I've _got_ to do this. What can I do?

I'm on RH6.2. Printing with my Lexmark 5700 was fine until I had a
frozen screen with Redhat's Update Agent and I canceled.

I lost my modem and printing. After turning off PnP in the BIOS I got
the modem working, that's why we're talking now, but the printing has
been gone. System won't find the printer. I used printtool to reset
everything and it does not recognize the device.

I think it looks like the system has stopped recognizing the hardware,
same as the modem, but I don't know what to do.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Had a similar problem with the Red Hat disk but the CheapBytes copy
worked fine. Never did figure out what it was, and since you can't
report bugs to Red Hat without disclosing FAR more demographics and
personal details than I want to hand over, they never got the bug
report.

Good luck.

This isn't really true - there are Telnet distributions that *are* secure
and which, in fact, offer better password security than SSH. One example
is SRP (http://srp.stanford.edu/srp/).

Subject: svga virtual resolution
Date: 19 Aug 2000 20:55:52 GMT

Hi all,

In an effort to get more video memory into an old Dell Optiplex, I bought
Dell's STB NVidia card with 16mb. My problem is getting 1024 x 768
virtual resolution with the svga driver, as I used to do with my old
accel driver. Here is the relevant part of the XF86Config file:

# The Colour SVGA server

 Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    # Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
    #Device "Generic VGA"
    Device "My Video Card"
    Monitor "Samsung SyncMaster 3"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
        Virtual 1024 768
        ViewPort 1 1
    EndSubsection
 EndSection

I get the same results regardless of whether the "Virtual" line is present
or absent, i.e. a screen that shows part of the desktop. It is possible
to pan around the desktop, so everything can be reached, but I prefer to
see the whole thing at one time. A very similar Display subsection used
to work just fine for my S3 card using the accel server.

How can I get a virtual resolution of 1024x768, so I can see the whole
desktop with my current hardware?

I'll appreciate any help I can get. Many thanks in advance.

Tom

I am muddling through the same problems myself. I'll let you know what I
think I know, and we hope that other experts will jump in if I am confused.

If you can run the "COM" ports which come with the machine, things should be
simple. If you must add a multi-port card it gets a bit more complex. The
Serial-HOWTO is a good reference, but make sure you have a compatible board.

>From the stand-point of Linux configuration, you should do three things:

(1) Make the necessary devices in /dev.  Typically /etc/ttyS0 is :COM1;
/etc/ttyS1 = :COM2, etc. Simply extend the scheme with as many devices as
you may need. You will need to if you are using COM1 to handle a serial
mouse.

(2) Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.serial to issue the appropriate setserial commands to
configure the serial driver. The most important parameters are the I/O
address for the port and the IRQ number. Again, the serial HOWTO will
explain, as well as the 'setserial' command documentation.

(3) Edit /etc/inittab to add a 'getty' for each terminal. I put them after
the 'mingetty' entries. An example is:

S2:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS2 DT9600 VT320

Which says for run-levels 2, 3, 4 and 5, respawn /sbin/getty (the login
process) on /dev/ttyS2 using the gettydef named 'DT9600' for a terminal type
'VT320'.

Hope it helps!

This is a feature of FTP these days. You have declared that "guest" should
be treated
like an anonymous user (via the line: guestuser guest), so the apparent
root of the file
system has been changed to /home/guest (as specified in the passwd entry).
I guess that
there are no files there, so a directory listing comes up empty.

If you want to give all guests full access to your filesystem, then removing
the guestuser
line is the thing to do; most times, though, it is a better idea to put the
files that ought to
be accessible to guests in a separate spot (/home/guest would do), and then
permit only
those files to be accessible (as you are doing via the guestuser
declaration). If you
want to permit particular users to have greater access, it is a good idea to
give them
separate logons (ie, make them real users), so that you maintain some
control of what
is accessible to them individually.

If you recall, he said he was going to take out his 1st drive (in primary
master) and put his 2nd drive in its place, install Linux, then put both drives
back where they came from.

So, Linux will have been set up on hda, but by the time he's swapped them back
it will be on hdb or hdc (depending on what he meant by "IDE secondary 26GB
drive"). Not only that, but his bootloader won't run - not that it would do
much good if it did...

You are of no help whatsoever. I was asking for assistance other than "read
the manual" because as I described I had read the manual and it did not
help. Whatever...

Why? All three groups are appropriate, and any replies would also be
appropriate. Every news client I'm familiar with automatically posts
follow-ups to the same groups as the original. So I don't understand
why the poster would need to set follow-ups....

Subject: Needing help with Samba
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 16:49:07 -0700

I've installed the Workstation version of Red Hat 6.2 with the KDE and
I'm needing to get samba up and running. I've read all the samba
documentation I can get my hands on but I'm stuck. Red Hat's
documentation says that samba is installed by default. Is this not
true? Here's what I've tried so far:

1) At boot time samba is not started. I thought by default it would be
running? I do not see any running processes relating to samba, i.e. smbd
or nmbd.

2) I've tried both of these and they do not work:
         /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
   and
        smbd -D and nmbd -D

3) I looked for the log directory /var/log/samba/ but is does not
exist.

4) I see that I have a smb.conf file! Why would I have a smb.conf file
if samba was not installed? I haven't made any changes yet, I want to
get the daemons running first and then I'll config them.

5) I went into linuxconf (Control:Control panel:Control Service
Activity) and I did not see smb as an availble service in the list for
activation or deactivation.

6) I used Red Hat's KPackage (RPM:Applications:System) and I see both
samba-client and samba-common. Doesn't that mean samba is installed?

7) I ran rpm -q samba and it says samba is not installed.

8) I ran testparm /etc/smb.conf and I get:

Load smb config files from etc/smb.conf
         Processing Section "[homes]"
         Processing Section "[printers]"
         Load Services file OK.
ERROR: lock directory /var/lock/samba does not exist.

Why would RH config my file to point to a dir that does not exist?

So is samba installed or not? I can't figure it out!

If I need to install samba could someone give me some dummy instuctions
on how do do it? I've read the HOW-TO's and make and compile and rpm's
but I admit it's a bit confusing to me. What's the difference between
make and compile anyways?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Subject: Setting up a RAM disk?
Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 17:59:30 -0400

Hi,

I'm clueless about setting up a ramdisk on Linux (RedHat 6.2,
in case it makes any difference).

I found a section in my Linux book, but it only mentions the
word ramdisk and it says that you should never use it because
the ram caching system is so fantastic...

Unfortunately, I don't find it that fantastic :-( I have a
machine with 128MB of RAM, and even after the third time in
a row that I run Netscape, it still takes practically the
same amount of time  :-(   (Netscape is just an example;
it's not that I want to set up a ramdisk just to make NS
work faster ;-))

So, I tried, and I tried, and I tried... But I'm still
clueless... I see a /dev/ramdisk symlink (or is it a
hardlink? I'm not sure), pointing to ram0.

If I try to mount it, it doesn't work:

# mkdir /ramdisk
# mount /dev/ramdisk /ramdisk

or:

# mount -text2 /dev/ramdisk /ramdisk

I don't know what else to try, and I can't find any references.

Any help? Hints, pointers to some info, etc.?

Thanks!

Carlos

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I have patched the apache 1.3.12 source with m$ frontpage extension and
have
compiled and installed the server under redhat 6.2

The apache starts up and says in the error_log:

[notice] Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) Frontpage/4.0.4.3 configured -- resuming
normal operations.

If I make a connection to the apache always the apache child process
crash
and I can read this in the error_log:

[notice] child pid 8088 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

Have you a hint for me ?

Frank
