Hy,

I'm trying with no success to change the /boot/message-graphic picture from lilo.
I read it is supposed to be a PCX picture but it doesn't seem to be one.

I hope someone would be able to help me ;(

Hi folks,

anyone using cdrdao out there? Well, I have made some strange experiences
with that software:

This morning, I used cdrdao to copy an audio CD. Everything was working
fine, but after the copying process was finished, the clock of my computer
was about 5 minutes behind. I had a look at that, and I noticed that the
computer's hardware clock was still alright and only Linux' system clock
was affected. I then resynced the system clock to the hardware clock, but
still I wondered why cdrdao does have any influence on my system's slock
at all? I have now tried copying another CD and the same thing happened
again. Any clues anyone?

Greetings
Nils

You can use the command "file /boot/message-graphic" to find out the
exact format, and if it isn't, convert it.
A sample splash screen you can get here:

OK, first problem first. The installer tried to install lilo (on the MBR, my
hardware doesn't leave any choice) it failed. I have had a look at
/etc/lilo.conf and tried several different configurations, including using
liloconfig, it always happens as follows:

# lilo
Fatal: Kernel /vmlinuz is too big.

Now I have no idea how the kernel got too big, it is a fresh install, and it
wasn't to big last time I installed Slackware. I used the same kernel image
(bare.i). Any help would be appreciated.

Now, after I use the kernel image I used to install (bare.i) from a floppy,
and then use

boot: mount root=/dev/hda6

I can boot into my system. However, I cannot start X.

$ startx
Fatal server error:
open_framebuffer: failed to open /dev/fb0 (no such device)

How can I rectify this state of affairs. I was looking forward to making use
of Slackware (the last install was defective for different reasons, I
customised it too much and didn't end up with a functional system, though it
did boot fine with lilo...)

Thanks in anticipation

Hello.

Having used Linux Mandrake 7.2, I decided to upgrade to Linux Mandrake
8.0. But to my great dismay, it turned out that it wouldn't let me use
my video card, which is an Elsa Erazor III (as it says under Windows

he/she overcome it (otherwise than by changing the video card, of

Thanks in advance.

When I try to ping to anyother system on the network , I would neet to

You don't need to do anything to the windows partition during the
installation of linux. After the system is up and running you can edit
/etc/fstab and add the windoz partition if you want to be able to mount
it. The line you would add would be something like shown below but would
include the correct partition device.

 /dev/hdaX /mnt/winme vfat noauto,rw,user 0 0

Where hdaX would be the correct partition for the windoz partition and
"vfat" would be the replaced with the correct format used for the
partition. the mount point "/mnt/winme" can be what ever you want to
name it.

There are no set specs for the size of the linux partitions. It is more
dependent on what you are going to use the system for and how much room
you need/want to give to each partition as well as which partitions you
want to use. The only partitions that are required are "/" and swap
though I would recommend you also use a /home partition for personal
files. I have attached how I have a 9.1 GB drive partitioned. If/when I
do a re-install I would make the /usr partition larger probably 2 to 2.5
GB.

I am M$ Free so only linux partitions are shown.
df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 99M 45M 49M 48% /

I have a similar problem with Redhat 7.1. Built a kernel (linux 2.4) via make
menuconfig, make dep, make bzImage, make install. The new kernel itself boots,
but hangs during an initrc script. I have traced it to a sleep statement in the
initrc script. When init goes to sleep (i.e., sleep 1) , the kernel hangs.
The stock Redhat 7.1 kernel boots fine and processes the init scripts.

So, what am I missing during the kernel build?

This is really weird, especially since bare.i is a small kernel... I
can just confort you by saying that I am as puzzled as you are.

Apparently the X server is configure for using the framebuffer. If the
error is veridical, than you have to create the /dev/fd0 device:

# mknod -m 660 /dev/fb0 c 29 0

You can also read the documentation in the kernel sources,
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/*.

If you are unable to configure the framebuffer, you can set up X
normally to use your video card, jut use xf86config as usual.

Good luck,

Since I'm formatting the regular high density floppy, I formatted
/dev/fd0h1440. I also formatted /dev/fd0 but both gave me the same

Also, the current disk is a vfat type and I need to format the floppy

and the boot disk would be created but now, it won't work.

The Linux is of Redhat 6.2 and its a standard install so the kernel

Linux System Suse Linux 7.2, Kernel 2.4.4

ich habe es mit folgendem Befehl versucht:

                    mount -t nfs nt_server:/freigabename /mountpoint

und bekam folgende Fehlermeldung:

mount: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection

Ich habe schon gehrt, dass es ein Problem mit der Verschlsselung der

Subject: lilo: making boot floppies
Date: 13 Jun 2001 12:54:16 -0400

We were trying to make a boot floppy using lilo. The normal way is
to create an ext2 file system, copy what's needed and then run

        lilo -r /mnt/floppy

We kept getting:

        Fatal: open/dev/fd0: Permission denied

RedHat's mkbootdisk worked fine, though. So, what was the
difference? Our fstab defaulted to 'nodev'. When you use -r, you
are getting the 'fd0' from /mnt/floppy/dev/, but if you mount nodev,
its not a device, and hence the problem. Mounting

mount -o remount,dev /mnt/floppy

is one way to fix the mount.

I did lots of searches on this problem and more than one person had
it. But, no answers. So I deviced to write this and toss it out.
No need to respond to me.

It is my experience that with 2.4, the swap file must be pretty big if you
have minimal amounts of RAM. On one of my boxes (an old 166 with 32mb of

In that case, why don't you move all your ppp scripts to a safe place, and write
new ones from scratch. Make them do exactly what you do when logging on manually
(also, edit your syslog.conf and log all messages to an unused console, eg. tty8
if you haven't done so aready. Makes debugging a little easier.)
