And /sbin is also for *binaries*... thats what bin means :-)

Like almost everything.. "it depends"

What do you want it for?

Do you want to control access in or out, if so what kind of control
and what kind of access?

Are you running software that uses special TCP ports, and do the ports
change? Some proprietary software is very bad mannered about ports.

Do you need logging, if so what do you want to log?

Do you want it free, or are you willing to pay?

There are lots of ways of firewalling, and they all have advantages
and disadvantages. So you need to think about what one is, why you
want it, and what things you want to do. That way you can decide what
it must have, what it mustn't have, and what you don't care about.

Then you can decide which one is good.

So your first job is to decide why you want one. List the reasons in
order.

Next, list the connections that will be made into and out of your
machine. What software, what ports.

Then decide what logging you want, incoming? outgoing? just the fact
of a connection? What the connection was? Who made it? URLs? FTP
sites?

Whats the application? Is the Linux box an internet gateway or just a
standalone "personal" machine?

Corporate? Home?

Anything based on the ipchains package is a stateless filter which is behind
the times, but it is what Linux has.

Beyond this, you could try

www.snort.org -- very powerful... but maybe difficult to configure.

Other IPchains front-ends:

If you are new and want a GUI to play with, maybe gfcc (works with Gnome).
I think firestarter is popular with beginners.

As another poster said SeaWALL is supposedly really good... never tried it
myself.

With linux 2.4 coming up, ipchains will go away and become iptables
(stateful).

There are really dozens more to try. Tell me what you are trying to
accomplish, and I can recommend one that is for what you are trying to do.

Cheers,
John

I have added a second NIC to my PC, but I cannot get RH 6.1 Linux to start

device, but I want it to be loaded every time I boot up. I have even added
a line to my lilo.conf and 'append' for both eths, but still this second NIC
fails. I have checked /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports and have not

Hmmm... Here I am just in the process of setting up a home network (brand
new to Linux), and I have an unused Sharp PC8700 - 486/50 with 20MB Ram,
~240MB disk. No CD, and I don't particularly want to buy a backpack CD.

I've kind of looked around for a small distro for it, but it seems like they
are all test distros or meant to run off of a floppy (mu linux, small linux,
etc.).

Is there a decent "firewall" distro that intstalls from floppy images, uses
Samba, and enables a dial on demand access to a modem?

I realize that I can cobble that together on my own if I have to (I'm lazy
though, and want someone else to have already done it for me) - so the
important question:

Which PCMCIA modem and ethernet cards can work simultaneously in two typeII
PCMCIA slots? I see a lot of cards that advertise "dongle free" - but they
have massive faceplates that would prevent another similar card from being
used in the next PCMCIA slot.

Any recommendations for a 56k modem and 10 or 100 ethernet PCMCIA card that
can sit next to each other at the same time? Dongles are cool with me, this
laptop won't be going anywhere.

Do any of the combo cards have the ability to dial up and run an ethernet
connection at the same time?

advTHANKSance

Has anyone experienced mysterious hangups with ABit BE6 440BX
motherboards and RedHat 6.1/6.2? This particular machine seems to have
quite a lot of file system related problems with its UDMA66 disk.
The UDMA66 disk is connected with an ordinary IDE cable so it should
work as any IDE disk - right? Besides standard installation is there
anything else? BIOS upgrade? Sorry, I don't have the BIOS date available
right now.

        any hints?

        regards,

Does it give an error (e.g. FAILED) at boot, or does it not even try to
bring up the card?

Did you add an entry for the second card in linuxconf? If not, type
linuxconf at the command prompt and go to Basic Host Information to add
an entry for the second card. Be sure that the X next to the "Enabled"
field is present. If it's not, tab to that field and hit the spacebar to
enable it.

By the way I notice you posted to 8 groups. I'm replying to all of them
because I want to make sure you see this and I have no idea which (if
any) you'll be reading. But for future reference, it's generally a bad
idea to post to so many groups at once. If you can't solve your problem
post back to comp.os.linux.networking only and give some more info :)

Greetings!

I am having a problem after installation with a ASUS A7V motherboard that
has a 1GZ AMD Thunderbird processor in it. System has 512MB PC133 memory,
Adaptec 29160 U2 SCSI, w/ Segate 9.1GB Cheetah drive. Matrox G400 32MB
single head.

The problem comes after the installation runs. Everything looks like it
completes ok, after the system boots from lilo it always halts at the point
where Linux is attempting to turn off the CPU serial number.

I thought this was just an intel thing - is this a problem w/ Intel specific
kernel on an AMD chip?

Help will be appreciated! either e-mail or newsgroup, thanks!

The correct mount command is:

mount -t<filesystemtype> -o ro /dev/hdd /cdrom

Where filesystemtype for CDROM is iso9660, so the entire command is:

mount -tiso9660 -o ro /dev/hdd /cdrom

This will avoid any complain about the mount.
Of course, you can use /dev/xxxxx whatever is the cdrom.

If all else fails (be sure to try xf86config too, it's a bit harder that
sax/XF86Setup etc., but always works for me) you can manually alter the
XF86Config file (usually located in /etc or /etc/X11) try pinching the
values for HorizSync and VertRefresh until you find a working config.
Back-up that file, and now you can always continue searching for a more
suitable setup if you're not yet satisfied.

Yeah, it says "FAILED". I do have it set in LINUXCONF the same as the first

I have an old system which had Linux installed sometime in the past.
It had LILO installed. I want to install DOS on it now (don't ask
why). I re-partitioned the disk and installed DOS, but it will not
boot. Apparently, LILO is looking somewhere other than where it
should.

I tried to remove LILO by running Fdisk with /MBR. Well, LILO is
gone, but whatever is in its place doesn't do anything useful -- I get
garbage printed on the screen.

Anyone have a suggestion about how to either (a) reinstall the DOS
boot loader correctly, or (b) reinstall LILO so it knows where the DOS
system is located, or (c) whatever else will make this work
reasonably.

I tried --nodeps and --force. - to no avail - still got the same error.

How can I install it?

Put the DOS boot disk into the floppy and run sys C: from it, this
should
do the trick and restore the normal boot.
