I believe you have to install the alsa source rpm and rebuild (rpm -bi
/path_to/specfile), or at least that is what I had to do for pcmcia on my
laptop (SuSE 7.1 with various 2.4.x kernels). However, rebuilding alsa
needed some other headers or sources I did not have installed (gtk.h and
gdk.h), so I configured the kernel and /etc/modules.conf to use the kernel
oss sound modules.

I tried to install kernel 2.4.2 It went fine till I rebooted. The at
the lilo prompt I pressed tab and typed in the name of my new kernel,
then I got this error "Root fs not mounted

Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic vfs: unable to mount root file system on 03:01
First of all what is a kernel panic and second how do I fix this.
When I edited lilo I assumed that the root partition would be the same
one as my other kernel. Thanks Mikey

I've heard that's not a great idea. I did try 7.0, and deeply

I am running a linux box and connect to the Internet via a Linksys DSL/cable
router. My ISP assigns addresses dynamically. I can browse, ping,
traceroute etc. via the router, but have been unable to get Sendmail to
work. I have never used sendmail. I do not want to administer a ton of
addresses or anything like that. All I want to do is script some
notification emails and mail them to an external email address. I have
attempted modifying the sendmail.cf with my ISP's host info and I always get
an unknown host error whenever I try to send anything. Any ideas?

I have exactly this problem with both RH 7.0 and 7.1; right after
recompiling
new kernel, 2.4.4 or 2.4.5.
Once I asked this question but no answer comes. Is there anything missed
in the recompilation ? I don't know.
Hope someone would offer an answer.

I'm a Linux newbie. Have installed a Turbolinux distro
i am using apache, and attempting to connect to localhost neither Netscape

Lynx reports. cannot connet to remote host
I started apache with /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start
i typed ipchains -L, however i get
Chain input (policy ACCEPT)
Chain forward (poicy ACCEPT)
Chain output (policy ACCEPT)
when i did netstat -rn there was nothing in the list, so thinking that i had
to add localhost i tried to do
route add 127.0.0.1
and it came back with
SIOCADRRT: No Such Device
any ideas?

If you properly set up a drive or partition(s) for Linux then they should
NOT show up in Windows. However, Windows is not too bright at recognizing
removed partitions or drives (that it should not tamper with). In
ControlPanel, System, Devices you might try removing any extra drives that
should no longer be there (possibly both if there are any duplicates) and
see what drive letter it assigns to your zip disk. I am not familiar with
Zip drives, but if it is Plug'n'Pray, you may be able to simply remove
that device and Windows should find it the next time it boots.
Generally when I have trouble with drives or partitions or duplicate
devices in Windows, I just remove all of them and let Windows reinstall
the proper things when it reboots.

Check the httpd.conf file, probably in /etc/httpd/conf and look for any
allow or deny directives. Maybe it is only set to 'allow localhost'.

Have you checked the error_log to see if there is a problem? Is your
hostname (or its set ServerName) listed in /etc/hosts? Sounds like it
might be coming up too soon before it can associate an IP with your
hostname.

Actually, windows will sit on whatever you say, even on secondary IDE. The

Since your system doesn't have a valid internet name or address you have to
convert your user name and domain in sendmail. Use genericstable to do

Subject: epson printer miracle
Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 20:58:45 +0200
Hi,
I'm having a weird problem with my new Epson Stylus Color 685 inkjet
printer.
Because of an error I made there is only rubbish coming out of the printer.
So I tried to stop this - without any luck
I'm using cups 1.1.8 on a Mandrake 8.0 machine. The printer is connected
via the parallel port.
Well after I noticed the error I did the following:
1. remove any blank paper from the printer
2. then I removed the print job.
3. turn the printer off ( with the button )
4. turn the printer definately off ( removing the power cable )
5. kill cups
So, now imagine the look on my face when I put some paper in the printer
and it starts printing this rubbish again ?!?!?!?!???!??!?
Where is this damn thing getting it's data from ???
Well, please, can someone clearify this for me ! What am I doing wrong here
? Is there something like a special combination of buttons to press to
clear the internal buffer ? ( Unfortunatelly the handbook doesn't tell
anything about this at all )
BTW, the documentation for this printer is the worst I've seen in ages. No
technical data, no description of the printer buttons, nothing.
There is only some explanation for the dialog boxes of the windows printer
driver and the mac printer driver.
Well, maybe there is some on the included cd, but there is no document or
pdf or whatever on it, just some setup.exe's .
Do I have to install windows to get some documentation for this printer ?!?
Well, sorry if this sounds too harsh, but right now I'm pretty upset with
this epson thing. I have an epson scanner and it works like a charm under
linux ... so I was hoping to get the same good result with this epson
printer.
Well, it does works well untill you make a mistake and fill the wrong stuff
into your printer - then you have to reboot to clear it ( well, I hope at
least this will fix it ... ;_)
So, please, any comments on this ?
Thanks in advance.

I got similar errors, after fdisk, screwed up a partition table.
I don't think they're reieserfs specific, the early 2.4.1-3 problems with
reiser were fixed in 2.4.4.
I should do any back up you can. Then unmount.
To fix the partition table, I had to use sfdisk(8) which was the only thing
that could read it, I tried gpart(8) which hinted that it was really messed
up. Anyway it made a pretty good impression of a screwed up hard drive.
The bug was triggered by the new Windows extended partition type.
You should eliminate partition table as a possibility, then try things like
badblocks, to see what happens.
Apparently linux only returns 1 bit of error info back up, though the
drivers knows more about the errors, so the upper layers cannot be very
informative :(
