Why do you think it should be /dev/scd?
Look further in your bootlog for a line like: "Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0
at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0"
and use the device listed.

Hi.

This is a question that is the reverse of the usual -- how do I *decrease*
the XWindow security?

I have a half-dozen machines with RH6.2/GNOME installed, and set to boot
to an XWindow login. A separate system runs a program that is to put a
display up on these machines.

What I want is to have the display be presented on the RH systems without
having to log in to them. What do I need to do to accomplish this? In
the same vein, what is the best way to turn off the screensaver for these
systems? (While the app is running would be best, but an all-the-time
shutoff would be acceptable; we can just turn the displays off.)

Thanks,
~Steve

Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 20:01:33 +0100

I have a dual boot system with Win98 and Mandrake 7.2 and everything
worked fine for a short while, but now I experience a strange beavour
from Linux.

When I come to the login prompt (text version) I login as root, but am
not able to write in the complete password, only a couple of the
letters before the monitor turns black. Thereafter a new window appear
with the header Self Diagnosis telling me to 'check S/cable' wich
S/cable? I have never seen this message before or again, maybe it
appeared once a couple of months ago, before I installed Linux.

I have a rather old GoldStar #1727 and it has been turning green
during Windows session but not when running Linux.

I would belive that this Self Diagnosis tool is beeing run by the
monitir driver. Am I right? What can I do to manage to reach the
Aurora login session?

Any good ideas?

Why would anybody bother with such weak hacks if you have 'cp -al'
and 'rsync' if you are doing that over a network? Relax! You have
now a real OS with real tools on it.

/etc/securetty lists the terminals that root CAN login at. After making
sure at least one is listed there, go to your PAM configuration if you
still cannot login as root at that terminal. Of course, after finding
the problem you may decide to change it back because not logging in as
root and su'ing over when needed is not a bad way of doing things. In
fact, it is pretty good. Or maybe even use sudo instead.

Subject: Why do I get auto-logged-out of my telnet session?
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 20:58:38 GMT

I'm running RedHat 6.2 on a PIII-700. Whenever I telnet OR ssh into
that box, then leave the sessions idle for some amount of time (maybe
1.5 - 2 hours), I get auto-logged-out.

Actually, maybe that's not quite it. When I return to the ssh/telnet
window, it doesn't say that I've lost my connection... at least not
yet. But as soon as I begin to type something, it immediately gives me
a "Connection lost" message.

I thought maybe it was a feature of my telnet/ssh client (Tera Term
Pro), but I get the same result with other clients. So it seems to be
server-side.

Next I thought maybe there was some shell setting that was doing it.
But my login shell is tcsh - a version I compiled WITHOUT the auto-
logout feature. (i.e. "echo $version" does NOT show the two
character "al" option, which would indicate auto-logout support). To
be safe, I even "set autologout = 600" (i.e. 10 hours) - but that made
no difference. So I don't think it's tcsh-related.

What else could it be? And how can I disable it, or at least stretch
the inactivity time to something much more suitable to me?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

If you dont mind putting a small linux partition on you win2k partition
you could put the /boot partition on your win2k partition which is about
16MBs you could then put the rest of the partitions
(ie: /, /usr, /home, ...) on the 6 gig Hard Drive. Using this
configuration you can configure Lilo to boot to both.

First of all, I guess 6.3 is either a misunderstanding or a typo -
RedHat never made a 6.3 - they went from 6.2 to 7.0...

Whatever...

Try linuxconf. It never failed me. Start it up. Go to
"Config"->"Networking"->"Client Tasks"->"Basic Host Information".

Now set your hostname in "hostname + domain" - but leave out the domain
(don't know why the linuxconf people made it so, but it messes up
with dhcp). So if your box is called "foo.bar.com", just put "foo" in
the line.

Set 'X' in Enabled for adaptor 1, choose 'dhcp'.

Now go to 'Net device' and choose 'eth0'.

Then you go to 'Kernel module'. Now you have to know _exactly_ what
module, your card uses. Do you remember from the earlier installation
perhaps? Choose it.

Exit linuxconf.

Choose to activate the changes. Now, if it does not work, run
'/etc/init.d/network restart'.

Hope this helps.

I download the iso images from a mirror site and burned it on 2 CDs.

Do I have to extract the file or what ?

I have used RH6.2 ever since it came out with zero problems of any kind.
Heard all sorts of problems with RH7 so avoided it, which seems to have been
a very good move as several friends went for it and have no end of trouble
even with all the patches. For me there is no reason for me to update to 7.
With my 6.2 install I first updated to 2.2.18 kernel (from the source
tarball) for security reasons, and now am testing 2.4 (also from source)

In short.

7.0 Not good.
6.2 rock solid.
6.1 never seen it, I went from 5.2 to 6.2.

I believe you should be able to get around the read-only problem with
the umask option set to 000. I just added this today and now I have
writable files/directories. Problem though-- whatever files/directories
I create in /music will have the userid and groupid set to root (if root
mounted the filesystem). I'd like to see user "foo" have a file created
in /music to have ownership of that file...Any insight on that is
appreciated.

If you are telneting/ssh-ing from a windows box then check out PuTTY.

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

You can set it to send null packets at minute or more intervals in order
to keep a connection alive.

Why? is a good question.
