Subject: Signature File for KMail
Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 13:27:02 -0700

I set up KMail for my KDE desktop using RH Linux 6.2

The question I have is...why does KMail always look for a "signature file"
when I choose to create a new message to send?....when I click "Cancel", I
am then allowed to see my blank e-mail message, and do w/it what I want.

During setup of KMail I left blank the text box where I specify the
signature, yet every time I create a new e-mail, it wants a "signature file"

It almost seems like the "signature file" is required, but I know there is a
way to disable this...

That's what I love about Linux.....The freedom of choice....

TIA!

Hi,

I noticed that anytime that I need to enter a password - there is a long
delay before it passes through.

Also when I "startx" I get a timeout message from xauth, but luckily the X
session starts anyway.

How can I get rid of this? I don't know how it started - it just popped
up one day.

Thanks

Hi Hjell:

I assum that you have yet the Linux CD and boot FD, if yes, try this:
        - try install Linux again on this HD
        - in the installation process you will asked to partition the HD
there you will have an option to delete partition(s) so do it!
        - reboot computer
        - now you can do DOS fdisk and format
Good luck.

P.S.
email me should you have problems with that.

This is no help with your immediate problem, but you might prefer SuSE's X
configuration thing. It has a nifty part called SaX with an adjustment
utility much as you describe. When I used it, it was really the first time
in three installs that I got my screen configured exactly the way it
should be in X.

In response to the other part of your question, yes, I had a sort of black
border around the edge of the screen when I was finished, but everything
inside that area seemed perfect and the edges of the various windows and
boxes were not cropped away, a major improvement over past installs. The
centering of the image on the screen can be fine tuned with your monitor
knobs.

You need to mount the FAT32 partition using the vfat file system type, using
the mount command.

Example:

"mount -t vfat /dev/your-fat32-device /mnt/your-mount-point"

In that case, the server will not forward the mail, but will instead
store it in a local mailbox, which will be accessed by the POP3 client
on the branch system. Not push, but pull. Just to get the
terminology clear.

> Is it possible for me to configure one Linux server at each station to
> pick up mail from my Linux server at my HQ so that my branches can also
> benefit from a unified mail address ?

Sure. On your HQ server, create an account for each branch server.
Configure sendmail to store mail for each server under the
corresponding account. The manual page for aliases(5) will give you
more information.

On your branch servers, regularly call fetchmail in the multidrop mode
to poll mail, i.e. transfer it from the HQ server to the branch
server. The details on fetchmail configuration are documented in
fetchmail(1).

Please note that this is the architecture you have described,
i.e. mail is stored in a mailbox on the HQ server and transferred to
the branch servers over POP3. This approach has several shortcomings,
the gravest of which is the fact that the SMTP envelope is lost and
has to be reconstructed by fetchmail. This will not always work.

A better approach -- which is, however, more complicated and more
difficult to set up -- would be to leave mail for the branch servers
in the sendmail queue on the HQ server and then use the ETRN SMTP
extension to actually start the transfer to the branch servers. This
will preserve the SMTP envelopes for all messages.

There is one more alternative, requiring a lot of administrative
overhead: Set up an individual account for each user on the HQ server,
and use lots of POP3 clients to transfer the mail to branch servers.
I would not want to use this beast, though. ;)

As an aside, and not meaning any offense, if you want to administer
an e-mail architecture such as that, I would urgently suggest some
serious reading-up.

Hello,

I have a problem with the syslogd daemon.
First let me expose :

I'm settings up a bootable CD-ROM for my firewall (will be a diskless
firewall with the full filesystem on CD). I'm working with a redhat 6.2. I
installed the base system and removed some packages to free up some space. I
did this by using the rpm command and never enforced to break dependencies.
I added some features (iproute2 packages, some perl modules, etc.) and here
it is, my system is ready for the CD recorder.

But when I boot, the syslog daemon hangs. I tried to launch it "by hand"
after boot :
# syslogd -d

This hangs too. No output, nothing !
If I log into another console and launch :
# ifconfig eth0 down
Then a few seconds later, syslogd starts OK. When having back up eth0, some
entries seems not to be logged (but I'm not sure).

I then tried to launch syslogd before the network in the boot scripts. In
this case, I have nothing logged.

I really don't know what I did broke when uninstalling some packages (I
removed things like anacron, at, gpm, gpm-devel, pcmcia, etc.).

If someone have any helpful idea, please let me know !!

Thanks in advance to all of you.

Sylvain.

Run syslogd through strace (strace syslogd -d) and see what it is trying

How do you configure the moving of the secondary harddisc to become slave to

Note that Epox has a fix for these types of Kernel panics

 http://www.epox.com/html/english/support/motherboard/Get.asp?Article=1271

           POSSIBLE SOLUTION

This issue appears to be related to a Processor Serial Number function
supported by Redhat that the
Duron does not. There are two possible resolutions depending upon the
status of your installation.

           1. When first installing Redhat 6.2 (or 6.1) you will be asked at some
stage if you require any special
parameters for the kernel. At this point enter:
           x86_serial_nr=1

Once installed, this parameter is already in the kernel and there is
no need to do more.

           2. If Redhat was already installed type at the lilo prompt:
linux x86_serial_nr=1

Once you boot, recompile the kernel with the: "Disable Serial Number
at boot" left clear.

You have a /home directory by default. All you are going to do differently
is create a /home *paritition*. Now when you do your install, instead of
/home being simply another file, it has it's own partition which can be kept
separate when you do a reformat and reinstall. Example: If your current
user name is /home/Buschman it will still be /home/Buschman after creating
the /home partition, BUT in this case it is kept separate from your /root
partition and you can reinstall your OS without losing anything in
/home/Buschman. So, if your mail account is in /home/Buschman (as it should
be, since you shouldn't be running in root) then after your reinstall it
will remain there. All parts of the filesystem that refer to something
other that /home/whatever will be replaced. You must remember to NOT
reformat the /home partition if you want to find everything intact after
your reinstall.
