Hi, Jesper:
CHEERS!
I finally MADE it!!
Thank you so much for your kind help!!!
Although I had read around quite a bit, all that helped me is basically the reference
you gave me. Thanks!
Though I have been with RedHat for one and half year, I am still quite a newbie.
Neither had I re-built my kernel before, all just because everything seems to work
fine for my desktop, nor did I know how to change to text boot mode. The past
whole week had made me rebuild the kernel for at least a dozen times. I am happy
that I did learn quite a few things from this hard time.
Thanks again and have a nice day!

I know this has probably been asked before, but I was wondering which 3rd
party Partitioning tool worked better: System Commander or Partition Magic
I'm running WinME, W2k, and would like to run Red Hat 7.1, Suse 7.1 &
Solaris 8 (Intel). To make things easier (if that's possible..:)) , I would
like to use a 3rd party application. Any insights?
thanks!

Take a look in /etc/xinetd.d and edit the proper file. Next run
/etc/init.d/xinetd restart. Then run ksysv to get your httpd startup
script into /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and /etc/rc.d/rc5.d.

What motherboard chipset is dmesg reporting?
For the meantime, run as root
# hdparm -d0
which will turn off DMA and maybe save what data you have on the drive.

Subject: Kernel 2.4.4 probs on a Toshiba Laptop w/Xircom Cardbus net/56k
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 00:26:38 +0200
Hi,
I run RedHat 7.1 on a Toshiba Satellite 4010CDT, mostly with success.
However, I'm having trouble getting the network to work under the new
kernel 2.4.4 (which I upgraded to because of problems with the sound card).
Anyhow, under the new kernel, I get no network access at all.. at boot up
the following occurs:
First kudzu comes up and asks me if I want it to do the following:
"Configure Xircom|Cardbus Ethernet 10/100"
"Migrate existing network configuration"
"Configure Xircom|Cardbus Ethernet + 56k Modem"
I have no idea why both Xircom devices come up like that. Then...
Loading PCMCIA...
"modprobe cb_enabler"
"can't locate module xircom_cb"
exiting with status 255
"can't locate module serial_cb"
exiting with status 255
get dev info on socket 0 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable.
I checked out the /lib/modules/2.4.4/kernel/drivers/net/pcmcia directory,
and found only a xircom_tulip_cb.o. Well duh, that's the problem!
However, I checked out the source distrib for 2.4.4 and there is no longer
any source for xircom_cb and serial_cb, though 2.4.2 also has a
xircom_tulip_cb. Where did these two drivers go? At first I thought maybe
xircom_tulip_cb is a replacement for the other two, but when I tried
substituting it for the other to in /etc/pcmcia/config, it came up with the
following warning:
"xircom_tulip_cb.o: symbol for reverse probe not found"
and ethernet was still kaput. So basically, what modules should be loaded,
and when and by what? Cardmgr is apparently looking for tulip_cb,
xircom_cb and serial_cb and can find none of them, as only xircom_tulip_cb
is present in the distrib. Does anyone have any information on the status
of these modules in the 2.4.4 distribution?
Thanks very much,
Jones.

I have installed Open Linux 2.3 on a second drive 40 gig, I have win98 on my
primary drive, my intentions are to use Linux on the slave drive by changing
the bios settings i.e.. by setting the primary drive to not installed and
then saving and rebooting. Although it appears that the installation went
fine, the problem is when I issue the reboot command my system goes
through the process but will not boot up, it has a flickering window with
what appears to be a mass of 01 racing up the screen, could this be an
incorrect video setting. I am totally new to all this and wonder if I
purchase RedHat would that install better.
Any advice is appreciated

"Intel 82810E Graphics controller". The invoice for my computer says

like a video card but maybe not. I am not used to installing Linux on newer

Definitely better than 7.0; the jury's still out as to whether it's
better than 6.2. More tinkering is in order before I can answer
that one.
Pros:
2.4 kernel
XFree86 4.0-series
upgraded KDE and Gnome
glibc-2.2 (only a "Pro" for those who have software that need it)
Cons:
Still has gcc 2.96 as the default GCC, you still have to
use kgcc for the kernel
Some things have changed, notably some system administration tasks
have changed slightly and some file locations as well, plus the
superserver is now xinetd rather than inetd, so the
things you're used to doing may no longer work as you remember
RP3 dialler is a little flakey (although less than it was in RH7.0
IMHO)

Two questions:
(1) Are you using Red Hat 7.0 or later?
(2) If so, are you using "kgcc" rather than "gcc"
to compile the kernel?

I have never used Open Linux 2.3 so I'm not sure about what happened here.
>From what I remember:
Lilo does not work with win9x that well unless you clear out a boot record in
the first part of the drive and install it there.
In this case I would recommend loading Linux on the second disk drive and
booting from a floppy for Linux. I have done this before with RH version and
didn't have a problem. Just beware when creating a lilo boot loader during
configuration. I think that there is the possibility that lilo will overwrite
the MBR record and prevent W9x from reloading.
I'm not sure that the BIOS changes will work if you have to reset the Master and
slave drives evertime you reboot. If you load 2 masters things seem to get
confused.
I guess you could try master on IDE1 and master on IDE2 and turn these off in
the BIOS.

Subject: A query about System.map and installing a new kernel
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 23:51:36 GMT
Hi,
I am currently trying to install Kernel 2.4.4 on my computer, but I have a
problem.
I'm trying to install the Aureal Vortex drivers as well. When the install,
I get a message saying:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.4/misc/au8820.o
(which is the aureal driver)
When I run:
depmod -ae
I get a list of function names. So, I assumed that I'd missed a module in
the kernel, however I looked at the produced System.map file and these
functions all exist, and if I run depmod and tell it to use this particular
System.map file, if succeeds. I looked in /proc/ksyms and the functions
don't exist there.
So far so good, so I assume I'm using the wrong System.map file. However,
every attemp I've used to try and change it still leaves me missing these
functions.
The only System.map files I have on the computer (that I know of) are:
/boot/System.map-2.2.19pre17 and
/boot/System.map-2.4.4
System.map-2.4.4 is the one I assume should work, but even renaming it as
System.map-2.2.19pre17 doesn't solve the problem.
Trying System.map-2.2.19pre17 with depmod produces more error messages than
depmod does with the current System.map
This is my first attept at compiling a new kernel, but apart from this
module, it works fine.
Could someone please help me? Am I missing the obvious? Am I thinking along
completely the wrong lines? I've searched the internet for several hours
and can't find an answer.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all-
Been tracking several VIA/southbridge related issues lately for my own
edification and would like to know if I missed any. So here goes:
VIA IDE/southbridge issues with file system corruption - Perhaps fixed in
the 2.4.5 series of kernels with the new VIA IDE driver. One continuing
discussion which is interesting is the amount of tuning one should do with
hdparm against drives on a VIA/southbridge system.
VIA and SB Live problems - I have an SB Live and have not found any
problems. Can anyone explain or provide more information as to this one?
Is it primarily corruption of sound being played back?
VIA and PC133/PC100 memory issues - Seems like the VIA systems have some
issues with memory. I have PC133 memory and have not seen a problem.
The issue around different drives and perhaps even problems related to
non-ide issues like with SCSI drives interests me. Does anyone have
problems with things like CDRW and scsi systems on a VIA chipset that is
affected? Like a KT133?
>From my one *vast* :) experience, the VIA drivers in the 2.4.5 kernel have
taken care of some issues I have. I am using twin Maxtor ide drives which
are working very well now. Secondarily, could someone provide the name of a
sound card which works well in Linux (not an SB Live) that they have used in
these systems? I have a CD burner in my other KT133 system but I don't burn
CDs too often so cannot testify how it works as of yet. Since I don't do a
lot of CD burning, I may just pull the burner out and put it in an older
system I have.
I'm kind thinking of summing up a lot of this stuff on a simple web page or
something to help folks out with finding information, patches and fixes, and
archived discussion links from a lot of different reading I have done on the
subject lately.
