Subject: Hard drive crash, bad magic number in superblock
Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 22:58:05 GMT

Actually, the title says it all. I got DOS/Windows back up, because I
didn't mind just re-formatting and re-installing (all the good stuff was
on the Linux partition anyway), so the drive is physically OK.
I don't have a clue how to get Linux back, though, and my linux
skills have rusted a bit since I have left this problem alone for a
while.
When I boot, the process reports the " bad magic number", but will
drop me back to a working root shell. In this shell, I can see that the
directory structure is intact, but that the partition is reported as
100% utilized. I infer that the crash filled the unutilized space with
garbage.
It seems to me that I remember that there are backup superblocks, but
I don't know how to find them or use them.
Any patient, knowledgeable help on this restoration would be
appreciated. It would be helpful to me to do this via e-mail, as my
current process for utilizing newsgroups is a little cumbersome, and I
don't want to take a chance on missing out on the right answer.I can be
contacted at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   Many thanks in advance

You did not post what Linux/release.
You should already have one loaded and just need to set the rules
and turn it on.

This built me a tight ipchain firewall rule set
   http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/index.html
I used DENY, hardcoded external addresses, logged everything.

As part of the instruction and if you read the script, it will
give several suggestions as to where you install the firewall
and turn on IP Masquerading.

Thanks for the reply.
Is there a mail connector I can use with sendmail/qmail/fetchmail, etc..
that allows me to get mails from the server if the server is not configured
for pop/imap due to whatever reasons ?

Thanks again.

I spent a fair amount of time comparing Applix and Star Office.
Applix works better IN MY CASE. Can run it remotely from
other X displays, handles the interchange with MxxxxSxxx
formats I need, can spawn as many copies of Word or
Spreadsheet as I need, all in separate windows. It does
not take over the desktop like Star Office. I typically
have at least 20 other windows open on my dual head box,
and found it difficult to appreciate the Star Office
approach.

Your mileage may vary.........

You can indeed share files, resources like printers and network services between
Linux and Windows. The tool you need is called Samba. It should have been
included with the distribution. If it wasn't you can download a current copy
from the Samba web site. For documentation, you can start with a PDF version of
a book called "Using Samba". It is available from the Linux Documentation
Project web site. Note that this is the first edition and has been updated.
You may wish to consider purchasing the current edition published by O'Reilly.

It should be possible for you to use the modem in the Windows box once the Samba
is up and configured. This statement assumes that the modem in the Windows box
is a HARDWARE modem, not a software modem. If it is a software (i.e. "Winmodem)
you will need to replace it with a hardware modem. If that is the case, why
don't you consider replacing the Winmodem in your system with a hardware modem,
and be a happy surfer, not to mention able to send faxes from your system.

Hope this helps.

I think that 8192 is the alternate superblock:
fsck -b 8192 /dev/hda1
for example.

I'm running Windows 98 and I don't want to partition the hard drive,
is it possible to install Linux on a CD-RW drive and make it bootable,
or do I need another hard-drive?

Thanks for any feedback, I haven't seen any doc's on how to do this.

Hi
I don't know the cause of this problem but there is a workaround. Edit
your XF86Config-4 file by commenting out(put a '#' in front of the line)
the line Fontpath "unix/:-1" then add you fonts in like:Fontpath
"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi" you can add all the fonts you have.
Then restart X. Same thing happened to me when I upgraded to 4.0.1 from
3.3.6

Subject: HELP!! ZIP drive
Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 09:36:14 -0400

All,

I am about to rip my hair out!! I have had a Zip drive working before
with a cool little X tool to operate it but, I don't remember if it was
KDE or Gnome and what the hell version/distro of Linux !!

Loaded RedHat 7.0 beta. Expected by then they would have by default a
way to get to my parallel port ZIP drive. They don't.

Downloaded jaZip-0.32 which is the X window tool to manipulate ZIP
drives. Had to get xforms first. Did that and installed xforms before
compiling jaZip. So, jaZip gives error #1 when compiling. Tried
insmod to load ppa and recompile, no dice. Tried removing scsi module
and ppa modules and rebooting. Tried kerneld restart and loading
modules again per the HOWTO. No dice.

Downloaded the drivers from the IOmega page. They only work on kernel
2.2.14, Redhat 7.0 has kernel 2.2.16. Have never compiled a kernel so
am a little scared of that because I am on my production machine for
work.

Mandrake 7.1 found my Zip drive at home no problem during install. What
gives? Does anyone know of a tool that comes as an RPM that is Gnome
compliant that will just load and go? This is nuts. I would go buy a
USB Zip drive but I am not sure it would be any easier to get going.

Would going to a 2.4 kernek help this?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Please reply both to the
newsgroup and to:

Thanking you prematurely,

Ralph

Hi, everybody,

is there any chance for a user to mount a floppy disk with a fs other than
ext2 without root having to modprobe the module?
In my case, I need to mount disks with a vfat filesystem and I don't want to
have to su and modprobe all the time. I have a 2.2.16 kernel with only ext2
(rootfs) compiled into the kernel; all other fs are compiled as modules.

I'd be happy if anyone could shed some light on this. Thanks!

It should detect the duals and install BOTH an SMP and a SP kernel.

Just another two cents: mkfs (at least the way I remember it for SUN-boxes)
has an option to show you where it would put super bloks.

                        DANGER!!!!!

If you run mkfs with unproper options (or no options!), it will overwrite your
filesystem and then, for sure, everything is gone.

Cheers,

Windows likes to boot from the primary drive and I hsve not found any lilo
parameters to get around that. You can swap which drive Linux sees as
which from lilo.conf, but that does not help Windows.

I have an old Win95 drive as hdb and after setting CMOS to boot to that
drive, I have to shutdown and then boot for it to work. But I boot
normally from the first drive (LILO in a /boot partition, not MBR) for
Linux or Win98.
