Use the "mount" command to determine if the CDROM drive is truly mounted. If

RISC OS used bundles which were called Applications. ROXFiler
(rox.sourceforge.net) has support for a similar system.

Hi all,

I've been running win2k for a while now, and I'd like to see what linux is
all about.

I got the Redhat6 distribution CD from a friend (burned, no manual or
anything). How would I go about installing? I haven't tried anythign yet. I
have a 5 gb partition (is this enough?) reserved for linux....

Does redhat automatically install a interface like Gnome KDE or E?

For me, someone who has no experience with Unix/Linux, is this the best
version for me? I've read of Caldera commandless type? I want to start slow
but slowly learn... I dont' mind paying a few bucks for a boxed distribution
that comes with a good manual.

Thanks,

Edward

He means that you should open X Windows with the command: startx Then
open a command line session. (In Gnome it is the little monitor screen icon
on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.) It seems a little crazy,
using X Windows to get to a command line when you already were at a command
line, but he's right - that's what you should do.

When Redhat 6.1 starts, among the endless lines that rush up the screen are
"ttyS0 is a 16550", followed by "ttyS1 is a 16550". I associate the number
16550 with a UART, which has something to do with the modem. When I run
wvdial, it reports finding a modem at ttyS3. The system dials, sends UID
and password, starts ppp and then stalls.

What is going wrong? Does the system think there is more than one modem.
How do I persuade the system that there is only one modem (if that is what
it thinks) and that it is in only one place?

I just installed pmfirewall from www.pmfirewall.com . The install script
just askes you a few questions to set up the firewall. It took me several
tries to get it work. Make sure to read the README and other documentation
first. The mistake I made was not enabling port 6000( for X server) and
7101(for true type font server). That caused KDE not running. you may also
need to exclude some ports that are reqired some internet applications. For
example, if you use ICQ, you need to exclude port "4000".
Good luck

Well, thanx but it didn't work. When i check the lilo version it was version
22. Currently, it's still stop at "LI..."

I am using 3 harddisks. 2 x IBM ATA66 2M @ 13.6G and 1 x Matrox ATA66 2M @
15G. The worst part is that my DOS partition (at drive C:, mine's dual
bootable) always get corrupted after i run /sbin/lilo and i have to fdisk
delete the partition and reformat it.

Could it be a case of BIOS? And my Linux distro is no difference to RH6.2.

Thank you again.

Can you ping?

Try:
this uses addresses for yahoo, you can use any valid server name and
address.

ping www.yahoo.com -c 3
you should get 3 lines with some transmission
data.

if this does not work the problem may be in your DNS setup.

Try:

ping 216.32.74.53 -c 3

if this works but the first did not you need to fix your DNS addresses

if the second does not work then your connection is not "up"

Doesn't work... must be something about me making the boot sequence in
BIOS now "D, A" [primary slave, floppy] causes windows98 to think it's not

Anyway, it seems that indeed there is no other way than to tamper with MBR

Still kinda new to Linux myself after a long absence from the System V of
old.
Not too sure why you are having problems with the install frmo hard drive
(still to try it) but I can explain what a ramdrive is in simple terms.

It is a virtual drive created in the computer's RAM or memory.l (Hence the
name RAMDRIVE!).
The plus is that they are super-quick (access times of 60 to 70 nanoseconds
compared to 100's of milliseconds for hard drives due to mechanical parts.)
and are temporary drives.
The downside is that they chew up some of your RAM (The size of the ramdrive
and a little overhead for the drivers).

At a guess you may be having problems because you may be running out of
memory due to the use of a RAMdrive (telling us how much RAM you have on
your PC may help some of the smarter cookies out there).

If this is the case, you have two ways to go..
1. Get a cheap industry standard CDROM (IDE of course) and do the
installation from the CDROM
or
2. Splash out on some more RAM and persist with the hard drive installation.

Anyway best of luck. I have only just got a decent box together to tinker
with that provides net access and then will manage my faxes in and out some
time down the track.

Happy hacking...

Ben.

I've noticed these things too: If you can't list the files in a directory
(the file list contents of whitch are forbidden or otherwise protected),
then you get this 403 message. But even in this case it is possible to
create an index.html file (with some simple content) and I am sure the
browser will read it.

I know this from my Internet surfing experiences, when I accessed a certain
file in a long address and then wanted to move up a level or two in that
same address or accesss either the index file or get the file listing. The
result was either the index file of that directory or the default message
that the directory listing was forbidden (in reality stating a missing
index.html file).

I have installed RedHat 6.1 on my AMD 450 (256MB/10GB with 10/100
ethernet) and it runs great; excellent performance of GNOME and all
server based tasks.

However, when I contact the server from my Windows boxes (either NT,
2000, or 98) I have to wait about 2-3 minutes before I get a login
prompt. This occurs for telnet, ftp, and SWAT.

The really wierd thing is that when I telnet from my NeXT box (old
black slab running NeXTSTEP 3.3) connections are instantaneous. When I
connect to this box from the wintel boxen, I get an immediate
connection, so I know it has to be something in Linux.

I've read all the man pages on telnetd, ftpd, and inetd and can't
figure out what is going on. I'm pretty sure that Microsoft is doing
something funky that inetd doesn't understand, but beyond that, I'm
confused.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hello!

This "bug in dynamic linker" problem seems to occur when you have
executables compiled with libraries which are (or part of them) no
longer there, which means that you have upgraded them (or part of them).

I once had the same problem with a self-compiled quakeforge (glquake)
executable, and I got aware that I had upgraded the libraries!
So I threw away the quakeforge executable and compiled it again with the
new libraries present.
Worked for me

Good luck

I'd like to try using Storm Linux on my laptop, a Debian-derived
distro. One problem I'm having is that apmd isn't supported in the
"potato" kernel. I'm having trouble finding the packages to compile it.

For example, the Debian recommened packages for compiling is the combo
of "make-kpkg" and "kernel-package". I can't seem to find them on my
Stormix hail ISO, and wasn't able to coerce the SPS system to find them
on my Debian potato ISO. (I simply mounted the potato disk and told SPS
to Find "kernel". It appeared to use a pre-loaded list of packages,
rather than investigate my newly-loaded CD.)

I also tried to find the files for "make menuconfig", "make xconfig" and
"make config", but with no success (most advice said to look in
/usr/src/linux, which didn't exist in my Stormix "install everything"
installation).

So how can I add apmd support?

TIA,
Jerome.
