Trying to install Linux on an IBM NetVista S40. Tried RedHat 6.1,
Mandrake 7.1, Debian, and Storm, but none could complete booting from
the CD.

According to one of the IBM web pages, several distributions are
supposedly supported, see
http://www.pc.ibm.com/europe/europeglobalnetvista/netvista_s40_the_tools
_you_nee.html. But there is no indication of special drivers, hints, or
anything else.

Has anyone solved this? Suggestions?

Thanks.

True, good possibilities, but I still see a lot of postings where lots of
bad hardware is suddenly discovered upon Linux installations... One would
wonder why didn't these problems didn't appear before they changed from
other leading brand OS...

Didn't work... Got "LI"<stall>

By the way, I notice when I change that part of lilo.conf, then do
dd if=/dev/hdb ...... | od -x -A x | diff ....
I see that the first part of the Master Boot Record of /dev/hdb
gets changed back and forth between the following two:

< 000010 0110 0000 b317 39a2 0221 0080 2201 8002
< 000020 0100 0220 0080 0101 00b6 0224 0080 2501

> 000030 8001 010f 0035 0680 3601 8000 0106 0037

indeed, if I were to do lilo;lilo;lilo;lilo;lilo;lilo; not even touching
lilo.conf between steps, I would see the same alternation between these
two --- is lilo doing some kind of safety backup thing or serial flip
switch change differentiator? and why? I assume this early part of the
MBR is inconsequential to the whole operation.

By the way, can I or can't I leave /dev/hda totally unmodified [win98]?
Why can't I seem to switch control to it from lilo on hdb?  [ASUS s97-v ;

Use loadlin instead of lilo. Never heard of loadlin? That's because it
works so well there are far fewer questions about it.

Ok guys,

I checked, and the "/home" directory is on another partition, but when
I'll install Mandrake, should I tell it to mount that partition as
"/home" or should I wait after the install is completed ?

BTW. I also put "/tmp" on it's own partition, should I mount it as
well or wait ?

Thank you in advance

the Linux partitions are the ones above listed <hda5-8> . Phisically there
is
1 W98 2GB Linux 1gb VFat: data 1gb
I used the existing partition in the middle that I previously had Linux on
last
year. I am familiar with the concept of extended and logical partitions but
since I created this Linux setup with the RH disk druid I an not sure where
the third partition can be addressed i.e. dev/hd?

Greetings.

Are you installing Mandrake? If so which version? Note that I didn't
install straight to 7.1, but upgraded fom 7.0. I simply booted from
from the install disk and configured X as part of the install process.

At what point did you try to configure X?

Say no more squire! I had one of these modems last week. Didn't work
either. Although it is supposed to be a proper modem, it appears to
function like a winmodem or soft-modem of some sort and Linux cannot
cope with it. I temporarily swapped mine for the external serial version

I would recommend a Courier V-Everything but I'm still waiting for mine!

Hello,

I am having trouble getting Audio CDs working on my machine (K6-2 500,
running Mandrake 7.0). I can use CD-ROMs without a problem, and I can
play mp3 files without any problem either (so, yes, the sound is
conencted up). When I insert an audio CD the machine cannot find any
tracks on the CD, and so therefore cannot play the CD.

Using Win98 I can play audio CDs without any problem, so it must be a
software problem, right?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Anthony.

Your only realistic possibility is to move /home data somewhere else.

This is the reason why you should _always_ have /home as a separate
partition from "/" (root).

Alternatively, I'd think the obvious alternative to be to copy /home
off to your backup medium.

You _do_ take backups, don't you? Linux may eliminate most of those
annoying "blue screens of death," but has no way of resolving the "Oops,
the disk drive went bad" problem. The only resolution to _that_ is to
have some sort of backup regimen...

I must have a path or a linkage

Any suggestions?
The equivalent C program compiles
and runs with no problems.
The C++ program compiles
and runs nicely on a RH 6.0 system.

Psst. That's /etc/resolv.conf for those of you trying "reslov.conf". Just thought you
should know :-)

I'd say you haven't gained anything. In fact I wouldn't even call that
marked-up, since all you have done is wrap a couple of meaningless tags
around it. Possibly if the ID attribute means something you have
gained the ability to parse the ID tag using a standard XML parser,
which isn't much.

XML is no use to anyone if it isn't actually used for markup. There
isn't much point having a document consisting of one element and a
CDATA section.

I disagree. XML might be an new form of an old idea, but it's been
done well and this time it has a lot of support. There are XML tools
out there - a lot of them - available on a lot of platforms and in a
lot of languages.

SGML might well do the same job - but is there a standard API for
parsing SGML that has the support of major software companies? Is it
available as an OLE object a Java implementation, and C++ library?

Right. And internet names are not `resloved' they are `resolved'! :-)
