Give 2XRAM for SWAP and 1.5G to /root if you don't want all these trouble.
You don't have to specify all the details of the file system.

Not necessarily. Other modes won't destroy your other existing OS as
well. Unlike the stupid Windows, Linux know how to work with other OS. LILO
will allow you to choose which OS later.
Hope that helps

I have try another mouse, but the symptom still happen.

I'm running Red Hat Linux 6.2 in a ERA 2000S NetBook. The graphic card
is C&T 65555. Xconfigurator recognizes it without problems, and I
configure parameters.
If I select 640x480 resolution, X works properly. When I try to select
high resolutions, from 800x600 pixels, test runs OK, but when running
applications, an odd flicker happens. It seems an error in coordinates
where information must be placed. Information seems to be moved out of
the screen before recovering the original position.
I've tried to change parameters with no results. Monitor, Refresh
frequency, bits per pixel, etc.
I'd be very glad if someone could help me.

I had that issue, as a result of trying the hardware cursor selection in
XF86Config. Make sure you have software cursor selected, it's all
well-commented right in the file, down in the video area if I recall.

I am using syslog to log events from remote devices. I would like
to do one of the following (or a mixture of both)
1. Limit the log file size, overwriting, or first in first out
dumping of data.
2. Limit log file size, starting new file (i.e. log1, log2,
log3...) when a particular size is reached (such as limiting to
files so that they will fit on a floppy)
Any ideas?

I posted this earlier, thought I'd try again with more clarity,
less preamble.
Trying to configure XFree86 3.3.6 (on a new install Redhat 6.2)
I keep getting an error trying to start X. According to
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/apm.html
I'm supposed to let XF86_SVGA probe my Alliance Promotion
video card for amount of RAM. X server does this, gets the
right answer (1.5mb), then bails out with message
>> cannot find aperture for configured amount of memory
(okay, so I may have misremembered "memory" for "RAM").
Of course, I'm not configuring the memory. If I *do*
configure it for, say, 1MB, X will start but draws on
only the center 50% of the monitor. If I configure it
for 1.5mb, I get the same error as above.
Question: What's the aperture? How can I solve this
problem?
Thanks!

Hello Guys!
I have a big problem:
My Linux broke down. More or less.
- I can still switch consoles with alt+fx
- an nmap over network shows the services of the host
- I can't use the running services ( can't connect to sshd for instance
)
- The sysrq key works still.
- kernel is 2.2.14.
- no x started
- before breakdown i started YasT
- no key works, no enter. Just the sysrq
- none of the opened shells accepts anything anymore.
- is a pentium 120 with 48 mb ram
Do you need more information ? Can you help me to
find out what's wrong ?
The computer is still running here, so I can test everything!
Please help, I don't want to reboot, if I don't need to!
Sincerly,
Nico

Check out this guide to making partitions in Linux:
http://nuintari.net/linux/mistakes/part.shtml
It gives you a very good idea as to what the different partitions as well as
how big you will want them to be in relation to your system.

Subject: Can't see partitions; can't create partitions. Help!
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 13:02:49 GMT
While trying to install Win98SE and RedHat Linux 6.2, I
partitioned/formatted the drive many times, using fdisk and format.
After numerous repartitioning/deleting using fdisk, and installing both
Win98SE and RedHat 6.2, I got to a point where the system boots to
RedHat Linux, only, without giving me an option to choose the OS.
After that, I deleted some partitions, and now the drive may be damaged.
There's a primary DOS partition.
There's an extended partition.
When I try to delete the extened partition, I get an error saying that
because there's a logical partition, I can't delete the extended
partition.
When I try to delete the logical partition, it says that there is no
logical partition.
These two error messages contradict each other.
When I try to create an additional logical partition, I get an error
saying that all the available space is used up. However, the
combination of primary and extended partitions does not add up to 100%!
When I do fips, it shows 4 partitions, and a warning that there's a
free space between 2 of the partitions.
Is there a DOS program that will clear everything in the drive,
including the partitions; basically, return the drive to pre-fdisk
state, as if it came right from the factory.
Any help would be appricated.
Thanks.

Are you trying to boot from the CD??? Or are you trying to make a
install/boot disk???
You should just be able (if your bios supports it) to boot from your CD-Rom
drive. If this does not work, try copying the disks onto a dos partition and
installing from there.....but, you still won't have CD-Rom support if the
drive is not supported....which sounds unusual........

Have you got the latest bios upgrade for your laptop?
You might then be able to boot directly off your cdrom.
This worked for me when I installed linux on an old desktop which
initially wouldn't boot of the cdrom.

Well, if NT is setup up as the gateway, and you are on a NT network, then
you will need to add your system to that network. Install Samba and setup
your linux box as a system on the network.
What I believe is happening is that NT is refusing to "share" its internet
connection cause your system is not part of the NT domain. That is if you
have set up an NT domain.........

I am not sure, but I am getting the impression that you did not select in
the install to use LILO as your default boot loader. It seems that the MBR
has been cleared on the disk so that is the reason that you get the "Missing
Operating System" error, and because LILO is not installed there you are not
getting the friendly LILO prompt. I would check your install again.

Hi all..
I have a small network at home... all seems to work fine.
I use one machine as a central mail server, and use imap around the
network to send and receive mail. This all works.
I have recently implemented dial-in on the server, so that I can use
mail whist I am travelling.
POP3 works a treat, I can download mail with no problem.
However... I can't send.
I am using sendmail on the network, and cannot make an smtp connection
from the dial in port. It works fine from other machines on the network.
It seems to be a permissions thing, but I can't find it anywhere.
Is anyone able to give me any clues as to where to start looking, either
in the sendmail files, or elsewhere.
Both /etc/allow and /etc/deny are set so that the ip address of the dial
in is allowed access, and I have mx records for it in the DNS server.
Many thanks!
Cheers!

I have had success with ranish partition manager (found on the web) for
getting rid of weird partition problems and to clean up and setup new
partitions. I then use os-bs (found on web) to create a dual boot menu.
Always works, no fuss. The final way I have used is to borrow a set of NT
4.0 boot diskettes and let the nt setup program find the partitions and have
it delete and or resize them etc.
