Hi guys,

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not exactly a
beginner, but there are clearly still things I need to learn
about Linux. I have read all the networking howtos, all the
man pages I could find, and the relevant parts of the
network administrators guide.

When I put a host name in the "/etc/hosts" file, I should be
able to look it up without going to the DNS server. But
when I type the "host" command at the shell, it always goes
to the DNS, then says "host not found". Here are the
contents of the pertinent files:

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost loopback
192.168.0.2 spica.localdomain spica

/etc/HOSTNAME
spica

/etc/host.conf
order hosts, bind
multi on

/etc/resolv.conf
domain localdomain
search localdomain
nameserver 192.168.0.1

When I type:
host spica
I get the response "host not found". But it is sitting
right there in the "hosts" file, just like the HOWTO says to
do it.

Are there any other files that are involved in resolving
host names?

Thanks,
Bert

Hi all;

I have Redhat 6.2 server install.

Would changing localhost to a different name make any difference to
its operation?

ie instead of;

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

have 127.0.0.1 gtech gtech.localdomain

and replace localhost in the apache conf with gtech.

So that lynx gtech works. Would this cause me to be unable to use my
ppp connection?

As when I connect and then try to ping the nameserver (230.48.5.1) or
any other ip or name, it just does nothing until I press ctr-c. The it
says that all packets where lost.

I used;

/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 57600 debug user erc connect "/usr/sbin/chat
-v '' AT OK ATDT85534300 CONNECT '\d\c'"

and the output log is;

Had a similar problem on my box. The IRQ shown in DrakConf is not
necessarily the right one. Type cat /proc/pci to see if your system has
recognized the nic. This will list the correct IRQ. Now all you need to do
is reconfigure your /etc/conf.module file to show the following line:

alias eth0 " name of driver module"
I.E. on my system it shows:
alias eth0 3C50x

Activate the changes and bring up your eth0 by typing:

/sbin/modprobe etho (loads module)
/sbin/lsmod ( lists loaded modules)

Here is a great howto I found helpful in setting up my linux box:

http://www.xmission.com/~howardm/ethernet.html

Have fun.

hi,
1st of all i'm pretty new to linux. i am upgrading my pc from redhat 6.1
to 6.2, because i'm having problems with 6.1 and my network card driver. i
copied an image of redhat 6.2 to a cd and created a boot disk (my linux
machine is not online). then i start up my linux machine with red hat 6.1
and ran the command:
mount -o loop -t iso9660 <isofilename> <mountpoint>
i set <mountpoint> to the mnt dir. (also tried this with the base and root
dir). then i rebooted with the boot floppy and tried installing 6.2 off
the hard drive, but i keep getting the error that the red hat file tree was
not found on /dev/sda1. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong.

thanks

OK. That installed the print plugin.

That's not actually necessary. I'll clarify the instructions about this.

You need the Ghostscript source, for starters. You cannot build the
general printer driver without that.

If it compiled successfully, everything is OK.

I cannot get it to work on any mode other than 640x480.
I have tried both Caldera 2.3 and now SUSE 6.4 and get the same black
screen. In SAX the config program reads the card bios properly but I
see no error messages. The screen blanks and I have to
CNTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to get out of it.

Any Ideas???

Perhaps you don't have a required interpreter or dynamic loader. ("wish"
is itself an interpreter, though, right?)

What is the output of "file /usr/bin/wish8.0"? If it's "dynamically
linked", what is the output of "ldd /usr/bin/wish8.0"?

Startx just launches a screen with two xterm windows and some sort of
log. There are none of the features I have been led to believe should
exist in the GUI for Linux (ie- some sort of menu bar, right-click for
properties, etc).

Does startx provide that for other people and just not for me? What am
I doing wrong?
