Off the top of my head, there is RH7.0 for Alpha.

Hi all,

I'm running Slakware 7.0, and am using GNOME/Enlightenment as my GUI.
I am trying to upgrade from gnumeric-0.38 to gnumeric-0.61.
(I downloaded the source code from ftp.gnome.org).

When running the configure script, it says:

checking for Gnome App libraries (GAL) >= 0.3.0 ... <FAIL> not found

I don't know what library this is talking about.
I can't (or I didn't) find anything called libgal at gnome.org.

What is this talking about, and where can I download it?

Thanks in advance,

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gurus,
I've switched to trying to use a 3rd party bootloader, XOSL, to dualboot
this system.

I've reinstalled mandrake 7.2 again and this time installed LILO on the /
partition, which is sda5
My WinMe partition is on sda1
All my linux partitions are in an extended partition

Problem:
All is well, but LILO still hangs at "LI"...
Also, I noticed when I booted with a floppy into linux, and tried to change
the lilo.conf, then ran /sbin/lilo I got the following error:
WARNING: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
I have no idea what the hell this means... something about the bios's number
system of drives, but I'm not sure if it's my problem or not.
Also, I got an email from someone that said I may need to recompile my
kernel to load the scsi controller??? does anyone know about this or how to
go about this, I'd greatly appreciate the advice. I've included my
lilo.conf file below

lilo.conf
boot = /dev/sda5
map = /boot/map
  default = linux
  vga = normal
  root = /dev/sda5
  read-only
install=/boot/boot.b
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  label = linux
  vga = 788
  initrd = /boot/initrd.img
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  label = linux-nonfb
  initrd = /boot/initrd.img
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  label = failsafe
  append = " failsafe"
  initrd = /boot/initrd.img

appreciate any suggestions... and thanks for the one's I've already
received...

Yes, you need "libgal" which is in GAL. Did you try GNOME?

Probably set-up LILO to boot from the wrong root partition.
It's very difficult though, to be precise if you don't supply
us with the exact error messages, (and the messages just before that.)

Malcom, look in /usr/X11R6/include/X11/cursorfont.h
You'll find a list of all your available pointers.
then do a :

xsetroot  -cursor_name  based_arrow_up

"or whatever name of cursor you want to use"

That should do the trick...

add here:

disk=/dev/sda
bios=0x80
disk=/dev/sdb
bios=0x81
disk=/dev/hda
bios=0x82

(add as many as you have)
This assumes that you've setup your BIOS to boot from /dev/sda
Check in the BIOS the order in which the drives are seen.
This is important, because LILO and the BIOS must agree on this.

There is no such limit. You don't even need a separate /boot partition.
The BIOS only has(used to have) one limit. The image to boot from must
be
accesible by the BIOS, and therefor must be below cylinder 1024
The amount of bytes that correspond to this, is entirely dependent on
your
specific setup (CHS values)

- Check if ftp daemon is installed.

- Check /etc/inetd.config for a line like this
       ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd wu.ftpd
-a -l -L

- read "man ftpd" for access permissions

Get a newer distro.
I never used Debian, so I can't advise it.
If you want RedHat, get RH6.2
Stay away from 7.0 for now.
The versatility is for each distro pretty equal. The initial setup
differs a lot though, as do the configuration tools.

Probably, but apache will do fine.
If you know to little, about any subject, be sure to get a book on the
topic.
You'll need it.

Samba will let your linux PC be seen by the NT network as an ordinary NT
PC.
Files will be accesible through network shares. You don't really need
it,
but it can be handy. I'm on an NT network too, never installed SAMBA.
(I still plan to do it in the nearby fututre though)

Could be so that your BIOS is uncapable of booting from hdc.

If your run `/sbin/lilo -v -v` from caldera, what warnings do you get.

The entire procedure shown above seems to me a little odd. You are
actually trying to do by means of a script what the boot loader can do
better.

The usual boot process, in fact, first loads a kernel, then it can
optionally load a root filesystem possibly into a ram disk. The boot
device is not mounted in this process, so if you want it available when
the system is running, you must explicitly mount it (so you can mount it
readonly or even keep it unmounted for better protection).

You can find a lot of information on the entire process in the
Bootdisk-HOWTO, which is intended to give direction for booting from
diskettes, but can be applied to booting from other means, too.

Cheers,
                                                        l.f.
