Subject: Adding dual boot to Win2K setup
Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 18:58:54 GMT
All,
I realize that this subject has been covered, but I none of the threads
give a step-by-step on how to handle my situation. I have a Win2K
system that has 2 hds. The first has 2 partitions, a 14.8mb FAT
partition, that I created to try and get bootmagic to work, and my full
Win2K NTFS boot partition. My second hd has another NTFS partition for
Win2K data, 2 linux partition (swap and ext2). I can now boot linux off
of a floppy, but I would love to use the hd to boot from and set up a
dual boot. I tried installing bootmagic, but bootmagic insists it can't
install because I don't have a primary FAT partition on my first hd
(which I, of course, do). So.. what are my options. I don't really know
much about bootloaders, so if you have an answer, could you make it as
plain and step by step as possible?? Pretty please??
Thank you so much,
Ed

I would say, simply work from the console. It depends on what exactly
you want/need to do, but for DTP use latex with simple ascii based
files, lynx for webbrowsing, also text based, news readers from the
console, and use when you need more then the defualt six simply edit
/etc/inittab. Switch from X with CTRL+ALT+F1 through F6 and switch from
console to console with ALT+F1 through F6 F7 goes back to X. You can
still cut and paste with the mouse, but never having to leave the
keyboard is also a good change. I only go to X to use netscape for
websites that depend on images, javascript and such.
Now to change the fonts in X. Part is application specific. Fi in
netscape, edit-->preferences-->fonts, in a xterm CTRL + right mouse
button, or a commanline argument.
A second way would be to change the default font, in the file
~/.Xdefaults. Take a look at the X manual "man X" section "FONT NAMES"
List all available fonts with xlsfonts, or use xfontsel to try them out.
Once you find the fonts you like add the lines:
SystemFont="-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
BoldSystemFont="-*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
WindowTitleFont="-*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
MenuTitleFont="-*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
MenuTextFont="-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
IconTitleFont="-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-8-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
ClipTitleFont="-*-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
DisplayFont="-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1"
to ~/.Xdefaults with larger (then 12) point sizes.

I'm using rh7 with kde 2.0.1 and kmail. when sending mail i sometimes get
the message that no connection to my smtp server could be opened, even
though it works with the same configuration some hours later and it works
all the time when i enter the ip address instead of the mail server name.
according to my isp it definitely is not a name server problem. receiving
mail over my pop account works perfectly. any idea what might be the problem
?
2.when i tried to trace my ip route with traceroute to find out where the
trouble might be i only get this output, even though i tried this with 3
isp's running traceroute as root and as a user:
traceroute [...]
1 ***
2 ***
3 ***
and so on...
tracerouting to 127.0.0.1 works, i removed and reinstalles traceroute but it
didn't help. what can i do ??
thanks in advance!

I have ttyS1 set wide open 'chmod 666'. I already tried chmod u+s
/dev/ttyS1 and it wouldn't take. The only thing I've been able to do so
far is change the owner and group of ttyS1 to one user so it will then
work for root and that user. Everyone else is out of luck. That's a real
nasty solution but the only one so far that works.

Does /etc/lilo.conf have the keyword "Linear" on one line by itself? If so
delete it and rerun lilo. That will convert lilo over to use LBA32 mode.
Should fix your 1024 cylinder problem.

Subject: printer issues
Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 16:20:10 -0500
I have "inherited" a linux system with RedHat 6.0 installed on it. I am
having troubles getting the system to install a printer. I have a PCL
printer, the HP LaserJet 1100, and there is plenty of information via
web that this printer works fine with Linux. However, here is the
problem:
When I run the printtool program and select "add" then "local", the
message showing which "ports" have devices attached to them says that
neither lp0,lp1 nor lp2 have devices attached to them. The message
suggests looking into the hardware if this happens. Apparently, Linux
cannot see that there is a printer there. I have verified that the
hardware works correctly because the system is a dual-boot with win95.
In Win95, the printer works fine, thus, the hardware is attached
correctly.
Can someone help me out!?
Thanks in advance,
Marc

Most likely the person who bequeathed you the system has at one time
build their own kernel. Since they did not have a printer, they disabled
printer support from that kernel.
Simply install one of RedHat's new pre-packaged kernels, or download and
compile your own with printer support, preferably as modules.
Then do a "modprobe lp" and a printer should be detected. Then you can
use printtool again and hopefully configure the printer.

Hi all,
I am trying to modprobe USB modules that are with my RH7.0 (e.g kernel

[root@localhost usb]# modprobe usb-uhci

Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters

/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/usb/usb-uhci.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/usb/usb-uhci.o: insmod usb-uhci failed
I get the same error with uhci or ohci modules. If any of you has an
idea of what this error means (in particular what parameters is it
talking about ?)

Subject: Copying Linux 1:1 on new harddisk drive??
Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 22:47:57 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi, and thank you for reading this. Maybe you could/would help me?
First, my english isn't very good, I'll try to make myself understood.
I have the following problem:
a student who has since gone installed a router/firewall for us with
SuSE 6.4 on an old PC P1/133
Everything is working fine, but:
two of the 3 scsi hard disks are making awful noises, and I want to copy
the current installation onto a new hard disk drive in a way that I can
simply switch from old to new drive.
The problem is:
I am a relative newbie, and it is not just from one hdd to another but:
the installation is on 3 elder fast scsi hddrives, which are partitioned
and mounted thus:
partitioned:
from to Kb type
/dev/sda1 1 1 8001 83
/dev/sda2 2 193 1542240 83
/dev/sda3 194 261 546210 83
/dev/sdb1 1 17 136521 82 swap
/dev/sdb2 18 43 208845 83
/dev/sdb3 44 131 706860 83
/dev/sdc1 1 1002 1026032 83
mounted:
sda1 /boot
sda2 /usr
sda3 /var
sdb1 swaps
sdb2 /tmp
sdb3 /home
sdc1 /
I have now bought an old DHCS with 4,5 Gb and I want to copy or image or
whatever you would call this from the three old disks to the new one.
I have partitioned the new disk as primary sdd1 and have mounted it as
/big, just to see whether everything is working.
Its working.
But now, I am unsure what to do next to ensure that I will have a
booting drive with an exact copy of the momentary working installation
once I remove the old drives.
Could/would somebody please tell me how to go about this? I am willing
to read all sorts of manuals, but I am afraid time is of importance
since the noise of the old hddrives is becoming more horrible by the
hour.
Thank you for any help!
Marcus.
