How about /proc/interrupts?
What version kernel are you using?
I had a modem busy problem that was solved by moving from 2.2.10 to 2.2.16 and adding
a serial driver patch.

Subject: LILO Doesn't Appear During Boot
Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 05:39:30 GMT
In the process of installing RH6.2, I was presented with the choice of
being able to have RH boot from the same partition where my Win95 C
drive lives -- I'm guessing from the RH fdisk -l output below that
/dev/hda5 is where this drive is located -- so I said 'yes' to it. Now,
I've also read about the wisdom of putting Win 95 and RH on different
partitions and setting LILO to boot from one or the other by default.
Because I also had problems getting disk druid to make space available
in the first 1024 (cylinders?) for the RH /boot partition, I tried --
after installing Win95 -- to adjust the FAT16 partition (I used
partition magic) to place the /boot partition.
The fdisk -l output tells me that /dev/hda1 is bootable, but I don't get
LILO during the boot process -- I go directly into W95 unless I first
use the RH boot disk.
Before I make a mess of the various LILO settings in linuxconf, would
someone please advise which way I should proceed with this?

You can do that by saving the PATH variable:
OLDPATH=$PATH
PATH=/newpath/:$PATH

PATH=$OLDPATH

Get the src.rpm and build it. Or install the kernel-source rpm. It contains a
configs directory which contains the various configurations.
Before building, do a 'makr mrproper' - sometimes RH leaves some junk laying

Hi folks, I wanted to run this by some gurus before I reported this bug
(I don't want to waste the good Redhat folks time).
During install of RH 6.2 from a floppy (using the updated
boot20000407.img and update-disk-20000407.img) and a CD I burned using
the zoot-i386.iso I get all the way to the package install routine and
then die.
The error is very similar to some earlier ones posted in these groups:
---
File "/usr/lib/anaconda/comps.py",
line 46, in __getitem__
return self.packages[item]
Keyerror: basesystem
---
only most of the others have keyerror: indexhtml. Anyway, I've updated
the boot diskette so that's not it. I also read that the hdlist may
not match my RPMs but that can't be it b/c I d/l'd the iso file right
from ftp.redhat.com.
Also, it can't be an architecture issue (I think) b/c I've had RH 6.0
and X running on this machine (Dell 8100 1.3Ghz Ultra ATA 40Gb drive
and Nvidia TNT2).
It shouldn't be a CD burning issue (iso standard vs. Rock Ridge vs.
Joliet) b/c if it were I would never get that far anyway.
So it must be a bug worthy of reporting to Redhat, right? Speak now or
forever hold your peace.

Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 06:58:15 GMT
Hi,
i have installed LILO 21.6 and it works fine with my old motherboard.
But now i have changed to the ASUS P5A-B and can't get LILO to work.
My partitions are:
/hda1 - dos
/sda1 - extended partition
/sda5 - /boot
/sda6 - /
/sdb1 - /home
I can install LILO on hda1 or sda1,5,6 or sdb1 it always comes not
above the "LI" and a blinking cursor.
I realy like to boot my "old" linux like bevor i installt the "new"
board.
Any sugestions?
Thx Thomas

Subject: insmod NVdriver no workee!
Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 23:07:58 -0800
My sys is: Asus A7V mobo, Canopus TNT graphic card, Sounblaster Live, 128mb
ram, 30 gig drive running Mandrake 7.2.
I just loaded the NVidia drivers per Mvidia instructions. i.e. downloaded
NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6 source, compiled it for my kernel, produced an RPM
(NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6.i686.rpm) with spec command, land oaded RPM. Then
downloaded the NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-6.i386.rpm and installed it directly. i.e. I
did not generate the GLX rpm from a source file. I don't need to do I
(just the NVIDIA_kernel rpm I believe)
In summary, I have downloaded the GLX and kernel files fron NVidia for the
TNT card, loaded XFRee86-4.0.1, built and installed the NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-6
rpm from source so it matches my kernel version, and installed the
NVIDIA_GLX rpm (one thing I noted: the source built an i686 rpm for the
kernel drive, and the GLX driver I installed directly from download was an
i386. Should this matter?)
Anyway, on boot the NVdriver module is not loading automatically.
However, I can load it with the command "/sbin/insmod NVdriver" and I can
make it load on boot by adding the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
"/sbin/insmod NVdriver." (I am verifying if the module is loaded by
"/sbin/lsmod")
But the NVdriver module is supposed to load at boot without this rc.local
workaround.
I have the required line in /etc/modules.conf ("alias char-major-195
NVdriver") per Nvidia instructions but it seems to have no effect. Without
an insmod NVdriver command in the rc.local file, the NVdriver will not load
on boot. Placing an insmod command in modules.conf (just as an experiment)
was of no help either.
Also, I have a second problem, when the NVdriver module is loaded, kde runs
fine, but when I try to load a hardware accellerated app (like the games
"tuxracer' or "GLtron" which come with Mandrake, The whole sys locks up
with a bright snow colored screen.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. I've been after this for 30 to 40
hours and am getting very frustrated.

Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem, and I know that the
configuration of this file is ok, because if I suspend the system
manually by typing:
apm -s
as root, the system suspends properly, and resumes cleanly when I hit
the Enter key, even if done from an X session. The problem only occurs
when it is X itself that is doing the power management, and it isn't
just the screen that stays stubbornly blank, but the keyboard is
completely unresponsive, and the fan, which usually only runs when the
machine gets too warm, turns on full blast and stays that way. I know
that the keyboard is not responsive, because when I try switching
virtual terminals using Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a previously started, non-X
based terminal session, and type "reboot", nothing happens; no disk
activity; nothing. It appears that X's use of dpms completely crashes
the system if asked to do more than simply standby. I have tried this
with both the kernel that came with RedHat 7.0, and the 2.4 kernel, so
it doesn't appear to be kernel related.
I'm wondering if this is the same problem that causes the system to
hang if I configure the 2.4 kernel to make CPU idle calls when idle.

Here's the warning, That probably is the problem
Is there any reason why you didn't connect it as /dev/hdb?
Some BIOS'es can only boot discs from the first IDE controller.
(ie. /dev/hda and /dev/hdb)
I would try this, as you may have no other choice.
You could try the following (Caldera's lilo.conf)
But I'm not sure if it will help at all.
boot=/dev/hdc
timeout=250
default=linux
vga=normal
disk = /dev/sda
bios = 0x80
disk = /dev/hda
bios = 0x81
disk = /dev/hdb
bios = 0x82
disk = /dev/hdc
bios = 0x83
image = /boot/vmlinuz-pc97-2.2.14-modular
label = linux
root = /dev/hdc1
map-drive=0x80
to=0x83
map-drive=0x83
to=0x80

That doesn't really matter, as it's the BIOS that's having problems.

First tell us what you did try.
Did you install on mobo 1, unplug the disc there, and plug it back in at
the new mobo?
(Then use a floppy to boot from, and rerun lilo on the new mobo)
Or did you do a fresh install on the new mobo?

Then the LILO code is not in the MBR and not on hda1.
Activate the partition where you put LILO instead.
(PS. if you don't know where it is, look at /etc/lilo.conf. The line
boot=
describes where it is.)

Hi there,
Somebody installed a RH6.2 on a system here, but apparently didn't
configure the inetd-stuff. ==> a telnet session from another host
doesn't work: "Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused"
I checked the inetd.conf file and that's OK.
But can somebody tell me what the default RH configuration file is.
Maybe the inetd-parameter is switched of over there. (I know it is the
/etc/rc.config in the Suse distr.)
But even if I start up inetd manually, a telnet doe not work...
If it is something else, maybe you know...

To start Gnome, type in .xinitrc in your home directory of this :

If to no avail, find where those two files reside.
