I'm having a couple problems setting things up like how I have them in
caldera and solaris.

Firstly, how to I get telnetd and ftpd up? There is no intetd process
up, and no inetd.conf file. I understand the security implications of
inetd, but for the moment I need convienient remote administration.

Secondly, how can I get X to run without being root?

Lastly, could someone explain to me why putting set -o vi or EDITOR=vi
in .bashrc or .bash_profile does not work?

Thanks,
iksrazal

I am trying to setup my cable modem that I have with AT&T @Home
services. Everything works GREAT in MS Windows. Here are my network
settings in MS-Windows 98SE.

=============================================================================
IP: 24.16.11.19
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 24.16.11.1
Host: C687689-A
Domain: fallon1.nv.home.com

DNS Server Search Order:
24.16.11.15
24.16.11.17

Domain Suffix Search Order: fallon1.nv.home.com

Computer Name: C687689-A
Workgroup: @home
=============================================================================

The setting that has me really confused is "Domain Suffix Search
Order" . Where dose this go in the Network Configurator??? I have run
netcfg and linuxconf. Hmmm?

I have migrated from a DSL modem and I thought this would be simple to
setup. All I have to do is change settings on eth0. It appears to be
more of a challenge.

Could someone out there PLEASE help me interpret all the above
settings in Linux-Mandrake 7.1? Where do I plug all this information
in? Obviously I am doing something wrong. Details please.

If what you are trying to do is boot from
the CDROM (and you can't), the problem is
not with SuSE 6.4, which hasn't even started
up yet (it's on the CDROM, right? and you can't
view anything on the CDROM yet.)

On most computers you have to change this by
going in to the BIOS. Reboot your computer and
pay attention to all the messages that scroll
by. Somewhere near the beginning it will pause
and tell you if you want to access the BIOS
(sometime it says the "setup") to press a certain
key or key combination (on mine it's delete).

Do that, and you will see the screens that
belong to the BIOS. Somewhere in there is an
option where you can change the order of things
the computer looks at when booting. Probably now
it has the floppy drive first, the hard drive
second. Change it so the CDROM is first, the
floppy probably second, the hd third. Save and
exit. (do not mess around with anything else
in there :-)

If the BIOS does not have such an option you
probably will not be able to boot and install
from the CDROM.

just to check and see... type locate kde and see if anything pops up.
I installed the server editin of RedHat on my first install, and I was
really confused when it booted up with a command line. I had never used
linux before, and the whole thing was rather disapointing. If you have
netscape installed, you might want to look into the Afterstep window
manager. It will progably work with the basic X server that you have. It
with Another Level, which is pretty darn basic. Good luck with that.

I had an email which pointed this out to me. Yes, the upgrade ignored my
rc.serial script so that the setserial command for my modem was not setting the
interrupt as previously. All sorted now so I'm back on line.

Win98 is on another machine using a winmodem, so its settings are a complete
mystery (to Win98 at times ;-)

Thanks for the help.

It's a local Telewest (Cable Internet) access number so I don't use the STD

Subject: DSL "Network down"
Date: Sun, 03 Sep 2000 14:46:52 -0700

I have on-demand DSL from Pacific Bell which I am trying to configure
for use with Redhat Linux on an HP Pavilion PC with an HP EN1207D
ethernet card.
I have installed the rp-pppoe client and am using a fairly new version
of pppd.

However, pppoe complains "Network down" on eth0 whenever it's started.
eth0 is visible to the OS and I have configured it not to be activated
at boot time. After pppoe fails, ifconfig shows eth0 and ppp0 with no
address assigned to either interface. It appears that ppppe cannot talk
to the [Westell] DSL modem properly.

The Windows pppoe client works with no problems.

Has anyone encountered this problem and managed to work around it?
Please reply by email.

But is I start "G" soft as root or any other user,
I don't have this output. I mean, even with this

I hope anyone has an idea. I suppose somethign is

you can add other names, but localhost needs to point at 127.0.0.1
ie
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.domain gtech
would be fine.

Try this.
log on as root and go to your user's folder.
I suppose that KDE configuration is in .kde or .kde2
so just type:
chown -R yourUserName .kde

This should fix the permissions.

Is there an easy way in a bash shell script, for instance, to determine
whether /dev/dsp is busy? For instance, I have a shell script which
performs some tasks and then plays a sound file and then some other
tasks. If /dev/dsp (or any other sound device really) is busy (playing
an MP3 or whatever), the script waits until /dev/dsp is free. Rather,
I'd like to have the script check to see if /dev/dsp is free...if so
play sound file, if not skip the sound file and continue. Any
suggestion?

You can do this if you have an empty (unused, extra) partition in your
HD. Just install Caldera into that empty partition. Otherwise, I havn't
experienced installing two Linux flavors one on top of another. All I've
done is install one version beside another (physically side by side
occupying different partitions on the HD).

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day.

This is not the same. Adjusting the scrolling/scrollback lines
works only on the one gnome-terminal one makes the change, and it
doesn't become the default. (At least when you have several running.)

Apparently one needs to edit .gnome/Terminal

Now all my terminal windows have lost their starting locations. They
all start on top of one another instead of the careful tiled locations
they had before something which use to work.

That means, that it doesn't help anything. I wanted to check if there is
a wrong linking to another shared object. But the driver isn't linked to
anything.
