Hi !

I have a server (Intel ISP 2150) which has HTTPD(apache) and rsync running. I
see that memory usage is increasing everyday through the number of process
remain the same:

OS: Official redHat 6.2
apache : 1.3.12
rsync latest stable

What could be the problem.....

Look, I have done it using lilo. For me is the best way to boot what ever
you want to boot (NT, W2K, W98, LINUX, etc). I had news about a guy that
booted W2K W98 and LINUX using W2K boot loader (but I have never done
it). So is it possible? I'm not sure.

If you have any throuble with lilo just write.

hi,
I just recently installed peanut linux. (http://metalab.unc.edu/peanut/)
The cause was its small size of the distribution , 48megs bz2.
Its small and runs just fine on my 701c, 40M, 700MB hard disk

For an NFS setup youll need to built a custom bootdisk, which recognizes
pcmcia and cardservices...
(To simplify this, I connected a parallel zero modem cable, and transfered
the required files for later setup)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I did exactly the same thing with 2 IDE drives.
The root partition containing /boot is also on a
RAID 1 volume. This one works and boots flawlessly.

Something wrong with my new Server/SCSI disks ?
Not very likely IMHO, since booting with floppy
(extremely slow) gives a perfectly good running
system.

Does anyone know where to contact
John Coffman (maintainer LILO) ?
There is no email address in the docs.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

JS.

This is not entirely correct. I have my windows drive as the primary
slave....it takes a bit of manipulation (ie. switching addresses of the drives
in LILO when you want to boot Windows). However, for a newbie, it is certainly
easier to keep Windows on the primary master.

Many (not all) RH users have a very frustrating time trying to wring
DHCP-assigned addresses out of the DHCP server using RH6.2's pump program.
The first thing you could try is to dump pump and run a good current
version of dhcpcd (as root) manually from a prompt after bootup. dhcpcd is
available from the usual archive sources (e.g. sunsite.unc.edu) and offers
all of its configuration options via the command line when invoked. As a
first try, just invoke it specifying the interface the cable modem is on
(e.g. dhcpcd eth0). This argument will prevent the daemon from probing all
interfaces and mucking up the wrong ones. dhcpcd should return you to a
prompt in a couple of seconds, whereupon ifconfig eth0 should show the
cable modem interface set up with its dhcp-assigned address and netmask.

There is also a web site with scads of Linux & cable modem info. Check:

http://www.cablemodeminfo.com/linbasics.x.html-ssi

Both CDs are IDE (there is an HP CDReWriter on hdc and a normal 44x

This is probably nothing to do with your having Linux installed. I suspect
that, since you first installed Windows, the number of programs installed which
are intermittently accessing your hard drive in the background has increased
and that these are causing ScanDisk and Defrag to restart every time the hard
disk contents change. When you want to scan your drive CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the
Task Manager up and kill a few of these background processes, e.g. virus
programs, MS Office indexers. After you have forced as many *non-essential*
processes as possible out of memory as you can *then* start your disk
housekeeping. Defrag and ScanDisk will run a hell of a lot faster if they
don't have to keep restarting.

all the best

Damian

Yes, but are you sure you want to?
The installer is warning you that you will not be able to boot linux
in the current setup, because the PC BIOS cannot access data beyond
cylinder 1024 (I agree, the message isn't very clear). So the best
solution would be to create a small (~15 MB) partition below this
boundary (usually around 8 G), or be willing to boot from floppy
(temporarily) and update the linux loader (LILO) or continue to boot
from floppy. If you insist on creating the partitions and boot from
floppy, you'll need fdisk to partition the disc, 'cause the partitioner
UI from RH6.1 won't let you do this.
