could have been linux extended just fine, windows wouldn't see it
either.

NOT A LILO PROBLEM.
answered this many times before, search deja for more info

Then the linux guru should have given you a better advise, only /boot
needs to be below cyl. 1024 (that's where the kernel image is stored).
So make a separate /boot partition below cyl. 1024, the remaining part
of / will very happily reside far above cyl. 1024.

> Downside - unused 1.5 BG on my 10GB disk.

You're problem, no reason why you cannot use it. Either as a separate
partition under /mnt, or as part of the normal directory structure, like
/usr /home or even / as I mentioned before

Just a guess, the first disc contains WINNT ?
then it's probably formatted with the NTFS filesystem and not with a FAT
FS
Partition ID's do not tell you what filesystem is on the partition.
If that's not the case, please report back here.

It should be name ipaddress portnumber

and then every side that you host also your so called mainside should have a
VirtualHost directive.
It is a bit confugsing but also pretty logical once that you know that
VirtualHosts enables a different way of hadneling calls. It sees a domainname
and it will look for the right documentroot for that domainname, this also
happens ofcourse for his standard domain.

No, it's best to keep NT installed, and add linux as the last OS to
install.
just put in the linux installation CD and go ahead. Just make sure not
to overwrite the MBR, since that contains the NT bootloader. LILO must
be written in the root partition (/) and NOT in the MBR. You can use the
NT loader to boot linux too. The details are in the bla-bla-bla HOWTO
(don't recall the right name, search for NT bootloader + linux + howto
on the web)

I do assume that you have free space to install linux too (preferably 20
MB below cyl. 1024). If not you have to create that first.

Trying to install Mandrake 7.0 from scratch.

Boot from diskette: OK
Boot from CD: OK

Reaches "second stage install"

Then, after about a minute, fails with X11 error messages (can't
connect, errno 111, cannot open display:0 at my_gtk.pm line 139).

Terminates, kills, umounts and tells me I may safely reboot.

Surely it isn't trying to open an X window at this early stage of the
proceedings? What do I do now?

(BTW, RedHat 6.0 installs without any problem).

install:(update actually)

  rpm -Uvh package.version.arch.rpm
  rpm -Uvh gtkyahoo-0.16-1.i386.rpm (example)

remove:

  rpm -e package.version
  rpm -e gtkyahoo-0.16 (example)

mind the part not to include in the name during the removing of
packages.

As far as I can tell (but I'm no expert) this shouldn't be needed,
though I a dual boot system, with win98 so i do have an active
partition.
You can make any partition active with the linux fdisk, but ofcourse
you'd need a linux up and running to use it. So boot from the floppy
disc and run fdisk once linux is up. (BTW, the BIOS is trying to boot
from the correct HDD?)

Don't use the .rpm extesion or version numbers.

For example if you installed:

xmms-1.2.2-1.i386.rpm
pilot-link-devel-0.9.3-10.i386.rpm

and wanted to delete them.

rpm -e xmms
rpm -e pilot-link-devel

: Looks like your shell is setting the window title, perhaps. What does
: 'echo $PS1' say?

It is [\u@\h \W]\$

This doesn't quite give the text in the titlebar, but is a pretty good
approximation. i.e. "myhome" instead of "/home/myhome" for the "\W"

However there is an environment variable $PROMPT_COMMAND which is

      echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME}: ${PWD}\007"

which gives all the right text, so your idea of pursuing the shell
rather than the windowing system looks promising. I had spent some
time looking through the Qt to see if it set the caption, but then I
realised that the same error occurs when I use GNOME, which (I think?)
doesn't use Qt.

Thanks for the idea.

If you start the RedHat installation, it will guide you trought the
various step. Read some documentation on the CD or on the RedHat web

I tryed to install in text mode and the same thing happened, except that it
gave said "Exception occured", (listing files, it was quite complex) then
after pressing the ok button it exited the install gracefully without
hanging and tells me its safe to reboot.

can someone please help.

The harddisk you bought is fat32 ?????
I may be formatted with a FAT FS, but that will be removed during
install anyway. No need to convert anything to FAT16, linux uses the
extended 2 FS and will run best on such a FS (although umsdos is an
option, you most likely do not want it) During the install make sure not
to remove any partitions on /dev/hda (first HDD). You can install LILO
in the MBR of /dev/hda, but for the rest /dev/hda should remain
untouched.

BTW connect the 2nd HDD as /dev/hdb (slave drive on the first IDE
controller),
because some bios'es aren't able to boot from the second controller.
