Hello,
I have compiled the kernel 2.4.1 under mandrake 7.2, but I can't get my
pcmcia network card to work. Under kernel 2.2.17, it works fine. Can
someone give me a hint where to start debugging the problem? FYI, I
successfully upgraded all the needed packages describes in the Changes
file in the kernel source tree, and I'm using pcmcia-cs-3.1.24.
Thanks for your help.

One solution could be running Linux with loadlin.exe - this could be put
in
config.sys as an option to a menu. So, at that time, you could either
decide
to start Windows or to start Linux. In order to do that, you need a
floppy
to boot Linux from, then copy vmlinuz to the dos partition (beware not
to
be treated as a text file!).

Are you running devfs?
If so, are you running devfsd?
If so, did you upgrade util-linux?

Currently, the pcmcia drivers in pcmcia-cs are better than in the kernel.
You may need to recompile the kernel with pcmcia support enabled, but no
modules selected, and then recompile/reinstall pcmcia-cs.

Subject: linux boot problem after running sndconfig
Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 18:41:45 GMT
I just purchased a new Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300
with a 650 mhz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM and 12 GB
HD. I installed Red Hat Linux 7.0, kernel 2.2.16-
22 from the CDs with the book Red Hat Linux 7
Weekend Crash Course. DOS/Win98 is installed on
hda1, Linux native on hda2, and Linux swap on
hda5. I got Linux running, but had no sound.
I ran /usr/sbin/sndconfig to find the driver for
my sound card. It detected a Yamaha sound card
(YMF744, I believe). (According to Windows
Device Manager, I have a Yamaha DS-XG Legacy
Sound System and a Yamaha DS-XG PCI Audio CODEC.
By the way, my sound card works fine under
Windows 98.) But when sndconfig tried to test
it, I got the following error msg, and the
computer froze:
Sound Configuration Utility 0.57
modprobe error
The following error occurred running the modprobe
program:
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/ymfsb.o init_module:

/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/ymfsb.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/ymfsb.o: insmod
sound-slot-0 failed
At some point, I got the following error, and I
can't remember when:
Saving mixer settings modprobe: modprobe: Can't
locate module sound-slot-0
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-
service-0-0

aumix: error opening mixer
The only thing I could do was power off the
computer, b/c CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't work. When I
reboot, I get the following:
Loading sound module (ymfsb): [OK]
Checking filesystems [OK]
Mounting local filesystems:
Then the computer freezes (the hard drive light
stays on, but nothing happens and the the
keyboard is unresponsive). I boot exclusively
from a floppy--otherwise I don't get a boot
prompt (I must not have LILO set up correctly).
Since the thing freezes during the boot process,
I can't reconfigure it. I type "I" during the
boot to try to get into Interactive startup, as
it prompts for, but it just ignores me and loads
all the drivers.
There must be some way to get Linux to step
through the boot process and prompt me as to
whether I want to load these things--just like
you can do with MS-DOS. I tried boot level 1 as
well, but that didn't make a difference. I also
tried "linux root=/dev/hda2 init=/bin/sh" at
the "boot:" prompt. Then I was able to
view /etc/modules.conf which had a line "alias
sound-slot-0 ymfsb". I couldn't edit it, because
I was in a readonly mode.
Any suggestions for me being able to boot? Feel
free to e-mail me directly. Thanks in advance.

One caution on the above suggestion. The driver name is nvidia for the new
driver (unless they changed it back in XF86 4.0.2.
In my installation for the GeForce2 on my SuSE 6.3 system I used XF86 4.0.1
and downloaded the drivers from nVidia site. These worked fine when I was
using kernel 2.2.16.
However, these didn't work when I updated my kernel to 2.4.x. Then on Jan 18
nVidia updated their driver (version 0.9-6) to work with the 2.4 kernels.
(This driver works for many (all?) of their cards.
There are RPMs there but sice I wasn't sure they would work with the new
kernels I got the tar.gz files and did the compiles. They worked immediately.
To find the RPMs and source go to www.nvidia.com click on the following (at
the top of the pages) "support" / "drivers" / "linux".
Note: when using sax2. It some times will hang the system at the very end.
The two times it hung mine it had already saved the XF86Config file so my work
wasn't lost.

Is it possible that by pure coincidence what I've always seen/attempted
is with the same S3 card model? I say that because the installation
procedure for RedHat 6 and newer is so straightforward -- the card is
recognized, or it is not; there's not much choice left to the user
when you install with the standard procedure choosing Custom install...
Anyway, I'll wait to see if there are other people with different
experiences.

Subject: Won't Compile
Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 19:25:26 GMT
I have compiled the libusb tarball on a number of occasions on this
computer with no problems. However, now when I try to do it, I get the
following:
In file included from usbi.h:4,
from usb.c:13:
usb.h:171: 'PATH_MAX' undeclared here (not in a function)
usb.h:171: size of array 'filename' has non-integer type
usb.h:182: 'PATH_MAX' undeclared here (not in a function)
usb.h:182: size of array 'dirname' has non-integer type
And it stops there. In the source code, the 'filename' and 'dirname'
variables have their sizes set as 'PATH_MAX + 1' and it obviously spits
the dummy because of the fact that PATH_MAX is an unknown function.
You'd think that it was an error in the source code, but the bizarre
thing about it is that I have compiled the exact same code before with
no problems. This error has just started appearing for no apparent
reason.
Any ideas?

Download it from one of a number of sites.
For instance, take a look at the Tucows Linux 'mini-distributions'

Hello.
How do I perform a network install of Star Office 5.2, using just the
file downloaded from Sun?
They have a README, which is only visible -after- the install, which
says to start setup with a /net parameter whilst running as root. I've
tried this, but all I get are the options to de-install, modify or
repair. I can't run with a /net before the install as the /bin file
automatically launches setup.
Has anyone managed to get a multi-user install of Star Office going
using just the download? I'm running Mandrake 7.2 if that's any help
(doubt it).

Subject: Re: Installed RH7, Win98 no longer boots
Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 20:30:07 -0000
I've thought about this issue a little more and here is what I think has
happened:
When i installed RH7 it prompted me to install LILO either in the MBR or
another partition (the /boot i think, or was it /root?). Anyhow, perhaps
previously LILO was installed in the linux /boot partition, which was from
cylinder 1021-1022 on the HD. This still put LILO early enough to wrest
control from Windows, but didn't overwrite the MBR which then could still
boot Win98 properly. Does this theory make sense? This also explains a
funny feeling that I have that LILO is actually running TWICE (once from
MBR, once from /boot)- it's too time-consuming to explain why I think this
is happening, but is it possible?
Nevertheless, I still have yet to think of a good way to get back into
Windows to restore the MBR without completely wiping out the partition. Of
course, I haven't ruled that out.

L.S.
When booting my old intel 386 machine from a Linux boot diskette, it
locks up at a certain stage in linuxrc. The stage where the system locks
up is after the selection of the keybord settings, and the main linuxrc
menu never appears. A manual reset is needed to unlock the machine
(<Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> does not work anymore).
I believe that the very stage at which this happens, could be a clue to
the nature of the problem (that is to more experienced Linux users than
me).
Below, I've described the hardware (in case that this information is
relevant to the problem), which runs under exactly the same
circumstances under an old MSDOS 6.2 without problems (the same hardware
has also run under Win95 previously). The Linux distribution I've been
using is SuSE 6.4.
Can the nature of the problem (more or less) be deduced from this
information ?
I'd appreciate very much some advice on how to proceed,
Thank in advance,
Erik Leunissen
