Subject: OXYGEN GVX1 Graphics Card SetUp Help
Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 13:13:28 -0800

I am running RedHat 7.0 on a two processor Intel PIII 800 MHz PC with the
following hardware.

500 Mbytes memory
CDROM
CDR
3 1/2 floppy
9 GB SCSI Drive
18 GB SCSI Drive
Oxygen GVX1 graphics card

I am having no success in configuring the X window system.

Running Xconfigurator the PCI Probe found a:

    PCI Entry: 3Dlabs|Glint R3
    X Server: Xf86_3DLAB
    Xfree4 driver: glint

I set up a custom monitor at 1280x1024 resolution @60Hz.
The Horizontal Sync was set to 30-69 KHz and the Vertical
Sync was set to 50-120 Hz as per the spec sheet.

Card memory was set to 32 Mb and the ClockChip setting
was set to no clockchip setting.

A 1280x1024 resolution @24 bit color was selected for the default display.

X was tested. On startup the screen flickered and failed with the message
problem with X configuration.

I am not sure how to proceed. Has anyone installed an Oxygen GVX1 graphics
card?
Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed? Any help would be
appreciated.

Best regards,

Aaron

You should download the Setup Guide. It is a pdf file. Chapter 7
has detail example on Network Installation then chapter 8 has detail
example on user installation. I did not have any problem on running
the multi-user setup on my Mandrake 7.2 and Solaris 2.6.

Well the easy way through the installation is to just have a disk in the
drive while installing. But then everytime you boot into linux, you'll
have to have a disk in the zip drive...

Thanks for the responses.

Sorry for the spelling mistakes

I did manage to get the kernel configured... I had to install gcc .. Not
sure why but it worked.

Will take me some time to learn how linux works, but am sure it will be
worth the effort...

Thanks again...

I'm using Corel (probably my first mistake) and within a few days
apt-get (0.3.11) has stopped working, throwing a segmentation fault
every time I try to install anything. The wonderful thing is that I
can't replace it from the CD or debian's site because it's distributed
in a .deb file (chicken/egg problem) And I can't convert it to a tgz
because I can't install Alien (it's a deb, too) I also tried grabbing
the sources for dpkg, but they require configure, which isn't installed
on my system (which I can't add from the CD for the same reason)

Or rather than reinstall apt, is the seg fault likely to be a relatively
simple thing to fix?

Any suggestions for my next step?

In your case, I would suggest using a boot disk. The windows partition will
be the active one, and anyone who boots the computer without the floppy will
see windows. You on the other hand will have the floppy and can boot linux.

You can use partition magic 5.0 and up I think on large drives , >8.4 gig
.

Resize the widows partition so that the 5 gig is free. and put in an
Extended msdos partition. FDIsk in msdos usually does this when you try to
create more than one logical drive

Divide the 5 gig into sub partitions for the root partition, the /home ,
/var, /tmp etc.
Do not forget to specify some area as swap space .

This will not cause problems with windows ,so long as you stick to the win9x
line .

NT4 has a Disk Administrator that has sometimes trashed linux file systems.
NT 5 will see that new partitions have been added to the system.
Win98 will blissfully chug along.

Note that once in linux, you can mount any fat23 partitions as "vfat" and
see all the long file names. Do not use "msdos" with it.
WIndows , on the other hand, cannot access ext2 file systems just yet.
There is a tool Explore2fs or something that allows you to access it.

Or is there an easy way to mount it throw a graphic interface in a win box

I installed Mandrake 7.2 on my system the other day. It works fine
except the sound card(SB live) gets an error on boot and that DHCP
failed msg. I'm not worried about the sound card. But I notice that
I cannot get on the internet through my Linksys cable/dsl router. I
set it as a DHCP server, and it doesn't connect. I have a feeling no
matter what I do, nothing will work because of that DHCP error msg
when booting. The ethernet card is Macronix 98x15. It shows up in
Harddrake just fine.

I can set the card up with a manual address and ping it's own address
w/ it fine, but I can't ping anything else, including the router.
I've used this setup fine under windows, but I can't get it to work in
Linux. Help!

You can just treat it like an ordinary share, and it should work WHEN
it's mounted. The main problem is getting it mounted. You could use an
auto-mounter or the Samba preexec and postexec options to get the server
to mount and un-mount the share when a client connects to it.

My hunch is that you're running into problems because of file
permissions on FAT. You can specify a user and/or permissive permissions
in the /etc/fstab file's options for the Zip drive. For instance:

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip auto user,noauto,uid=500,umask=0 0 0

This will cause the system to mount the disk with ownership assigned to
whoever has UID 500, and with a umask of 0 (which gives all files 777
permissions).

If this ISN'T the problem, please post a more complete description of
the symptoms. "I can't do it" is a bit on the vague side. Include
information like what sort of share definition you're using in smb.conf,
what your /etc/fstab entry is, whether you can access the drive as
various users in Linux, and precisely what failure symptoms you're
seeing in Windows.

Hey all,

I'm getting interruptions in my NFS server ever since I upgraded from
2.2.17 to 2.4.0.
I'm running the rh6.2 distro, and other than the occasional
interruptions my NFS works
fine. What I'm actually doing is playing MP3s off of an NFS-mounted
filesystem. The
problem started happening ever since I upgraded the NFS server from
2.2.17 to 2.4.0.
The MP3 (song) will silence for a few seconds, and then resume.

I notice these messages on one of my NFS clients:

nfs: server bach not responding, still trying
nfs: server bach OK
nfs: server bach not responding, still trying
nfs: server bach OK

...etc. (bach is the name of my NFS server)

I recently upgraded to the 2.4.1 kernel, and I have the same problem.

Also, I commented out the rpc.lockd lines of the nfsd script in my
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ dir.
I still have the same problem, and unfortunately newsgroup searches
yeild nothing of
my problem, but I don't see how this can be an uncommon problem. So
I'm posting...

Any suggestions? Please Cc: to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a Promise ultra 100 card and in order to get it working to install
linux I have to pass params to the kernal at boot time (example
ide2=0xb400,0xb000). to get the params you need to do a pci scan for your
card. once you get it booted and linux installed just add the params to
lilo unless you boot from a floppy. if its a floppy then you have to enter
the params at every bootup. kernal 2.2.18 has experimental suport for the
promise cards, but I haven't tried them yet. Good luck and hope this helps.

As mentioned above, I'm using Debian's woody and printer doesn't
work properly.

I have loaded proper kernel modules(I think that there is no problem
in kernel level.) and used the 'printtool' for printer configuration.
Although the detection process was succesful, when I chose the input
filter as HP500(I have HP500 printer.) in printtool and tested it
it just produced a piece of blank paper.

I want to know how the debian users are configuring the printer system.
If using the printtool, what may be the problem in my case?
If not, what may be the best way to configure printer?

Try "strace apt-get" to see where the seg fault is coming from. That will
give a pointer to debugging the problem.

I'm trying to use printtool to setup my printer but it can't seem to
detect my printer. I'm sure that the parport module is installed and my
/etc/modules.conf DOES have the line:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

I've looked in the startup messages for anything to do with lp0 but I
don't see anything, so for some reason my parrallel port is not being
detected. If I

modprobe parport_pc

then my printer does it's little initialization thingy so it looks like
it detected something, however printtools still will not detect the

You will need to do the following as "root or "su" to root and install
it by following these steps.

chown 0.0 so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
# this makes it owned by root

chmod 755 so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
# make it executable

"cd" into the directory where the file is and run:

./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net

Install it where ever you want it, I will use "/usr/local/office52" for
example purposes. Once you have it installed you may need to change the
path to where you installed it in the next step.

Make a symlink so normal users can use it.

ln -s /usr/local/office52/program/soffice /usr/bin/soffice

The only thing left is to login as a user and run.

soffice

For each user that runs "soffice" for the first time It will
automatically install the user files.
