type init 3, then XF86Setup, then test it until it is correct. Then init
5. Trial and error will get you what you want.

Yes i do attach my first HD (windows installed) to my primary IODE
controller as Master and the Second HD (where i want to install linux on) to
my Primary IODE controller as Slave. Driver letters are arranged as C;E on
first HD and D;F on second HD, so do you mean linux will see my first HD as
/dev/hda and second HD as /dev/hdb????? and do you mean I should only
partition /dev/hdb during linux installation??? and after installation drive
D;F will become mke2fs type instead of FAT32 is that right????? sorry for
asking too much question because I am not confident enough to do it
myself... ^_^!

I don't understand. Here's a snip from my original post showing the results
of running "fdisk /dev/hda" and pressing p to print the partition table:
**fdisk reports my boot drive as follows:
**Disk /dev/hda: 64 heads, 63 sectors, 623 cylinders
**Units = cylinders of 4032 * 512 bytes
**
** Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
**/dev/hda1 * 1 622 1253920+ b Win95 FAT32
**
It shows hda1 as a Win95 FAT32 partition. Is this fdisk report wrong? The
man fdisk pages say "If possible, fdisk will obtain the disk geometry
automatically." It then goes on to clarify that it is not the physical
geometry "...but is the disk geometry MS-DOS uses for the partition table."

Hooray! This works, so now we know that the vfat module is correct. I think
(I'm not really sure) that floppies are always FAT16 and, if that's true,
then we still don't know whether FAT32 is causing the problem or if it is
something specific to the drive and/or its format.
The man fdisk pages contain a section titled "DOS 6.x WARNING" which I read
but I could not make much sense out of it. It is possible that the drive
was formatted by DOS 6.x before Win98 was installed on it, but I don't know
that for a fact. But, it seems to me that the first thing that the Win98
setup does is to reformat the drive anyway, so it shouldn't matter, should
it?
What now?
Thanks,
Don

Hi,
THIS LINUX PRINTING IS DRIVING ME NUTS.
I have been trying to get my EPSON Stylus COLOR IIs (TRIGEM) printer
working on redhat 6.1 for about three months on and off,
"UNSUCCESSFULLY" of course.
The problem is that i want to print using black ink-cartrege,
as most of my printing is black documents.
I have tried various Ghostscript devices, uniprint drivers
read the docs over and over again, posted on the net....and
done many unmentionable things but to no avail.
The closest i have come to getting some sane output is
with the following GS options
gs -sDEVICE=stcolor -r360x360 -dnoWeave -descp_Band=1
-sOutputFile=\|lpr fileName.ps
and
gs -sDEVICE=stcolor -sModel=st800 -sOutputFile=\|lpr fileName.ps
they both give me ouptut that is elongated in length and the verticals
lines are mis-aligned.
Is anybody out there who has successfuly printed with
EPSON Stylus COLOR IIs (TRIGEM) printer using black ink-carterege
Please Please Please Please Please help me out herex
cause it is a real bother booting into windows again and again
just to get printouts.. and i cant buy a new printer just yet.

I didn't think so, but judging by what I found below, I must have...

A "find / -iname v*.o" gave me several lines including:
/lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/fs/vfat.o
So, I do have that and that explains the ability to mount the floppy drive.
But then when I did "find / -iname m*.o", msdos.o was not found! And
similarly, when I did "find / -iname f*.o", fat.o was not found!
So, it looks like you've figured out the problem. Thanks!!!
Now, where/how do I get msdos.o and fat.o? Do I just try to find them on my
Linux CD-ROM and copy them to /lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7/fs, or do I have to do
some sort of install? Or is the easiest/best thing to simply re-install
Linux from scratch and hope that I get it right this time?
Thanks again for the help,
Don

Could you detail what happened in more detail? Files being unmoveable
could be a symptom that the immutable bit has been set. You can change
this by using
chattr -i <filename>
to remove the immutable bit. Reinstalling may be cleaner if you have
lost files but its normally an extreme step.
I've had lockups of the keyboard and one serious hang with XFree86 4.0.0
but nothing that bad. I assume you had to do a forced power-off due to a
total lockup. Did you try the magic SysRq trick for syncing, unmounting
and rebooting (hold down Alt-SysRq, press 's' and wait, press 'u' and
wait, 'b' to reboot instantly) - even with an unresponsive keyboard I
can usually get this to work. My prefered route now is to do Alt-SysRq-r
and Ctrl-Alt-Delete to initiate the shutdown and reboot without hitting
the power button if I can get it to work.
Bernhard> I don't know why this happened, could be that the nvidia

ext2 doesn't really cope too well with forced power-downs. With ReiserFS
or Ext3 things should be better. Consider installing one or the other if
you are worried about lockups. As far as I remember you can just drop in
ext3 onto an ext2 partition as it uses tables to keep tabs on what has
changed rather than requiring a reformat. ReiserFS I do not know much
about but it comes highly recommended from several sources.

This is always good advice.

Give us more details. And send them to NVIDIAs help lines for linux if
you really believe that there is a serious conflict.

I am trying to think of a way to get Linux on to a 486.
When I try the installation like I did with my pentium setup, I get an
error with the math emulator.
I have been advised to compile a new kernel but I'm wondering how I will
get this on to my 486 and boot it up.
My boot disk has a image on it so I cannot get in and place the bzimage
on the disk,
I'm wondering what I might do.
Anyone hlp?

Understand you're pissed about this. But which card do you have exactly? I
have a Dimand Viper 770 (TNT2 chipset) and have no problems whatsoever with
the 0.9.4 drivers! In fact Quake 3 runs very smoothly.
Since I started to poke around with these drivers i have the Magic SysRQ
key compiled in my kernel. And i used it a couple of times to unmount my
partitions before resetting while X crashed.

Hello all,
I am trying to configure EPSON Stylus COLOR 740 as a local printer
connected to the serial port...
I have dualboot, and under windows it works ok, so I guess there are no
hardware problems.
With mandrake 7.1 instalation program... I get no errors but the test
pages
dont show up... same with printtool...
lpr gives no errors, and lpq no entires... and the printers just remains
silent!
I tried what is explained on this page :
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=62112
But not quite sure I did correctly...
Here is what in /var/log/messages looks intresting... and then my
/etc/printcap
Anybody has any ideas to help me out?
Thanx alot..

Make clean remove all binary files that have been generated thus far, this
includes the ones you just produced in 'make dep'. This means that 'make
bzlilo' has to recompile them AGAIN. This will make kernel compilation take
a lot longer. In other words, clean is undoing your dep so bzlilo has to
redo it. Anyway, just an FYI,

Can't you just get the disks (floppy and CD) from your favorite
distribution?

What linux are you running? I am running RH (originally version 6.0), but
had not trouble compiling a kernel downloaded from www.kernel.org (mirror
site). The kernel I used was 2.2.14 as a tar.gz file. If you get redhat
packages, I think you have to get both the source file and the "headers"
file.
Good luck.

Subject: Scsi Tape Drive on RH 6.2?
Ok, I've got a working RH 6.2 system, Scsi controller(s). I've got
a shiny new external VXA tape drive and cable. And I've read every
How-to I could find on what happens next to make the linux system
aware of the tape drive, and what device names I should use to access
it.
Can anyone point me in a direction?
