man pppd (hint: look for the demand option)
also, you might like to look at
diald, and it's numerous frontends
there's also a HOWTO for this subject Diald-HOWTO PPP-HOWTO.

If you search through deja.com with some keywords and + in front of them
you can probably find the article pretty quick. I have lots of luck
that way.

I am a complete newbie...today is my fist time running Linux ever...here
is what I did.
I installed Redhat 7.0 via FTP site.
when I type startx, Gnome starts up
then I logged in and did a right click on the desktop
the menu gave me the ability to try different GUI's (Like KDE, ect.)
I choose WM (Window Maker or Window Manager?)
reboot, now I'm in this WM GUI that has almost nothing.
I right click, get a menu to exit & run a few apps but not switch my GUI
back to Gnome.
I'm sure I can edit a startup file somewhere, but what one and where?
Please email any responses to:

Anyone know if there is a driver out there (or maybe even on the RedHat

I recently used Ghost 2001 to clone my linux system to a new, bigger disk.
The process went off without a hitch!
Now when I shutdown or startup the system every rc.d script seems to
generate a message about "Invalid Character 1 in Exportstr" (or something
like that)...
I found another posting about a similar issue after repartitioning using
Partition Magic but there were no suggestions about fixing it! In the
meantime, the system seems to work!

Subject: gcc <math.h>
Date: Tue, 06 Feb 2001 05:50:32 GMT
I have installed Linux7 and gcc-2.95.2-3mdk and associated packages.
gcc seems to compile simple c programs nicely, but when I use
include<math.h> and the square root function, it gave me the following
error messages:
/tmp/ccmwjmAJ.o: In function main;
/tmp/ccmwjmAJ.o (.text +0x2e): undefined reference to 'sqrt'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status.
gcc gave similar error messages to all trigonometric functions. Oddly
enough it didn't complain about the absolute function abs() !
Can anyone offer helpful advice ?
Can anyone comment whether gcc is a robust, industrial strength compiler
?

I just installed my RH Linux 7.0. boot from bios setup or floppy disk

Since everything is setup very well, I start thinking of installing LILO

abs is part of the standard lib and doesn't require special linking in
gcc. math functions are part of the math library (<math.h>, libm) and
need the option -lm. try "gcc -lm XXX". (and read some docs: "The C
programming Language" by Kernighan & Ritchie, and the documentation for
gcc and glibc, which is included in the source distributions).

Hy.
I managed to install my first Linux OS on an old 486 66mhz 400mb puter.
had no room for KDE so have used the console to configure things but have
also found it too hard and frustrating without a GUI to use.All it was spose
to
do was act as a DHCP and quakeworld server for my lan club but have
decided to wait till ive gotten a bigger hard drive, more ram and a GUI.
To the point..What are the issues..if any...to uninstalling linux and
reinstalling
Win95...Ive seen posts about " # fdisk /dev/hda " but they mention its
not
for the faint hearted...I do not wish to make the HD unusable and if you
could
give me a rundown on the correct way to do this id be most gratefull.

A ran one time in an annoying problem , my harddisks were located
both at the secondary , windows disk on master , linux disk on slave .
With this configuration using lilo is not possible . Make sure
your windows hard drive location is primary master (if you use two drives) .

I don't know grub, so the syntax will be wrong.
The method will be essentially the same though.
I'll give the lilo example:
add to lilo.conf:
others=/dev/hda1
label=win2k
and run /sbin/lilo
Now you can puzzle it out for grub.

try to avoid them all :-)
No there really aren't that many pitfalls, and you can always
return to the current situation.
first of all, from linux, backup the MBR: `dd if=/dev/hda
of=/boot/MBR_hda.img count=1`
then change the line boot=/dev/fd0 in /etc/lilo.conf to
boot=/dev/hda and rerun `/sbin/lilo -v`
Now lilo should be able to boot linux :-)
Ofcourse it should boot NT too.
add (again to lilo.conf)
others=/dev/hda1 ------------>>>> this should be the C: drive of NT
label=win2k
and run `/sbin/lilo -v` again
Now reboot(if all went well) and enter win2k at the liloprompt.
If it doesn't work, or isn't to your liking:
`dd if=/boot/MBR_hda.img of=/dev/hda bs=446 count=1`
and the NT loader is restored.
If you want the NT loader as the main bootloader, read the linux + NT
loader howto.

I've just installed Mandrake Linux 7.2 on my brandnew computer, I had
also problems with connection via my cable modem. Windows 98 on the same
machine and Red Hat 6.2 on my laptop do not have this problem and the
networkcard (3c509b TX) installs fine (after fiddling with the pci
placement on my A7V mainboard, nice board but picky with pci), so the
difference had to be in the way Mandrake start his dhcp. This is the
case, mandrake uses by default dhcpcd to get dhcp information, red hat
6.2 uses pump. After some searching on the net, I found a another
client, dhclient, the ifup script can use all three of them but the
sequence is, if ifup finds dhcpcd it will use this, after that it
searches for pump, and at last for dhclient. So instal pump and/or
dhclient and change the sequence in ifup (you can also remove the other
clients and only leave the one you want to try on the system), both
worked for me (pump on red hat 6.2), but I use dhclient now, because I
saw somewhere it handled things more like windows 9x if you define a
/etc/dhcclient.conf like this,
interface "eth0" {
send dhcp-client-identifier 1:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx;
send dhcp-lease-time 86400
}
xx:xx:xx:xx:xx = your ethernet address.
It is also the official client coming from the ISC. Maybe you've better
luck with one of these two ! Another problem I've read a lot about is
define a hostname, if nessary add the hostname manually to the client in
ifup to be sure (I didn't have this problem)!
good luck
Met vriendelijke groet,

1 you need a kernel with 'math' emulation > 386 is without a fpu
2 for the current distributions, you need at least 16 mb memory
if you just want to see if linux is running on your hardware:
try 'rtbt' from http://www.toms.net/rb/home.html
it is a mini -linux with some tools on one floppy.
