Make sure the drives aren't both set as master/single. On IDE, one drive
must be master and one must be slave. Looks you haven't got this
configured right.
You can configure this with jumpers on the back of the HDD's (make sure
the drive containing windows remains master)

BTW the partition check tells you the following:
you have one primary partition on hda, (windows calls it C:, linux hda1)
and one extended partition(hda2) Inside this exended partition there's
one logical partition (D: in windows, hda5 in linux) So nothing to worry
about. (except the {DriverReady Seekcomplete Error} message, which is
scary.

I've just installed RH6.2 on 20G harddisk with Windoze.
It works fine. Partition table looks like:
1 - WinME 2G
2 - Win2000 3G (Active)
3 - FAT 3G
4 - Extended (rest of 20G)
Linux is inside extended partiotion. In such configuration you have
to be sure, that bootsect.lnx is really your boot sector
from /boot linux partition (not root!). In my case it's /hda5.

What gave you the idea it all needs to be on one file system. Not
every MTA is limited to delivering to /var/spool/<user>

Hmmm. By typing 'su' before running any of the scripts, it appears that
I have convinced it to report some errors. When I type 'make
menuconfig', I get the following:

<<<begin quote>>>
There seems to be a problem with the lxdialog companion utility which is
built prior to running Menuconfig. Usually this is an indicator that
you have upgraded/downgraded your ncurses libraries and did not remove
the old ncurses header file(s) in /usr/include or /usr/include/ncurses.

It is VERY important that you have only one set of ncurses header files
and that those files are properly version matched to the ncurses
libraries installed on your machine.

You may also need to rebuild lxdialog. This can be done by moving to
the /usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog directory and issuing the "make
clean all" command.

If you have verified that your ncurses install is correct, you may email
the maintainer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or post a message to
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for additional assistance.

make: *** [menuconfig] Error 139
<<<end quote>>>

I have tried removing my existing ncurses and ncurses-devel packages and
replacing them with the latest versions. Nothing has happened. My
/usr/include/ directory contains files called 'curses.h' and 'ncurses.h'
and a sub-directory called 'ncurses'. All of these appear to pertain to
the ncurses-devel package.

When I type 'make xconfig', I get the following:

<<<begin quote>>>
rm -f include/asm
( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm)
make -C scripts kconfig.tk
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts'
cat header.tk >> ./kconfig.tk
./tkparse < ../arch/i386/config.in >> kconfig.tk
make[1]: *** [kconfig.tk] Error 139
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts'
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2
<<<end quote>>>

I can still go through the process okay if I 'make config'. However,
when I 'make dep', I get the following:

<<<begin quote>>>
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `dep'.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
scripts/mkdep init/*.c > .depend
make: *** [dep-files] Error 139
<<<end quote>>>

Does any of this help at all? If I could find a reference for this
'error 139', then it might be useful.

I checked my bios that the first HD(where win98 on) is primary master, and
and second HD where I want to install linux on is primary slave. So I think
I have configered the drives right. BTW my first HD is running at UDMA mode
4 and the second is running at UDMA mode 2. Is that a problem why it detects
my HD as a SCSI???????? and what is {DriverReady Seekcomplete Error}????? Do
you think I can still install linux or not???

Subject: SUSE/YAST: question about autoconfig
From: Hanspeter Schmid <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 08 Sep 2000 12:06:18 +0200

Dear Readers,

I heard from a friend that SUSE's YAST automatically changes
configuration files when one installs new software and sometimes
discards manual alterations made to certain config files without
telling the user and without making a backup.

Specifically, my colleague had altered the sendmail configuration;
after the installation of a seemingly unrelated package, his manual
alterations had disappeared.

Is there a way to tell YAST to keep manual changes made to
configuration files or at least to inform the user what was done and
make a backup? Or is the problem maybe solved in the SUSE 7.0
distribution?

Kind regards,

No doubt your bios tells you this, but you should check the jumpers on
the HDD's manually (Yes, that means opening the box)

Why do you think it is detected as a scsi drive? scsi drives are called
sdXXX in linux, and nowhere in the listing you gave, I see any mention
of it.
{DriverReady Seekcomplete Error} is some error, I don't have a clue on
what it means exactly, no help there from me, but indicates some
hardware problem I suspect.

> you think I can still install linux or not???

At this moment I don't see why not, just check the jumpers. The bios may
not care for both drives identifying themself as single, but since linux
doesn't use the bios information for this (unlike windows) there's no
garantee that linux will detect them correct too, if they are jumpered
wrong.

Sorry to butt-in, but, if you're going to take the side/top off your PC
it may be worth considering moving the second disk drive to the second
IDE connector on the motherboard (if possible). Yes, this means buying
another IDE disk cable, but there's a significant performance gain to be
had if both IDE drives act as master, especially in busmastering-enabled
systems, where they can act independently.

Time to butt-out now!

This might be helpful, too. rpm -qa >rpmlist Make a list of the
packages using their actual names.
rpm -qa |grep part-of-the-name Finds the actual pkg name when you know a
"piece" of it.

I've got a PS/2 IntelliMouse with wheel; under Red Hat 6.0 this
(sometimes) used the wheel to scroll windows, though in RH 6.2 the wheel
seems to have no effect (though the wheel button works). Does anyone
know how to configure this device? I've got it configured using Setup
with IntelliMouse (PS/2) chosen + Emulate three buttons. If I try to
configure it using xf86config, I can't get it to work at all (choosing
IntelliMouse and device set to either /dev/mouse, /dev/psaux). I can't
get XF86Config to run at all (suspiciously, it wasn't installed by
default, which leads me to believe that there's some issue...).

TIA,
