Could someone tell me where this file should be located to properly
configure xwindows. When I run startx I get the same screen resolution no
matter what settings I put into this file. Is this the file that should be
edited to make the screen resolution changes? Also I can't get cntr-+ or
cntrl-- to do anything and my viewport is larger than the physical screen.
Can I set this to the "virtual" viewport to the same size as my screen?

Thanks for the help.

Log in as root and type lilo and then press enter. First make sure you
have a bootable w2000 disk in case of any problems. When Lilo installs
you will see it go down the screen and tell you your boot options that
are added. Another way is to go into Klilo from the Kde desktop and set
it up from there. You may at some point neet to edit your
/etc/lilo.conf file by hand to get it to do exacly what you want and you
can get plenty of examles by going to deja.com and doing a search. If
you run into really hard problems there are lots of really smart folks
in here to help:-)))

Subject: howto stop dhclient??
Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 04:39:43 GMT

I had recently decided to use dhclient instead of pump or dhcpcd because
of all the other options that I can specify in dhclient.conf.

Starting it up is simple, modify /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup,
replace "/sbin/pump" with "/sbin/dhclient" with the required parameters.

My question is what to do with shutting down the network? e.g.: when
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop" is called,
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown is also called. What options do I
have to specify for dhclient during when ifdown is called?

There does not seem to be an option to kill the currently running
dhclient daemon via dhclient ( like you do with dhcpcd -k ).

Any ideas?

Using dhclient-2.0pl5.

I just bought a new hard disk and I am wondering how is the best way to
copy my old system to it completely.
I can install the new disk as a second disk and mount the partitions,
but how do I copy the important files to it so they are intact, and in
the right place.

Any help would be appreciated.

/etc/X11/XF86Config
Edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config somewhere there will be sections which
look like :
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "640x400"
        ViewPort 0 0
        Virtual "1600x1200"
    EndSubsection
This is the section where the settings for your display at a colordepth
of 16 bit are set. In my case the default mode is "1024x768" the other
modes are tried succesively when the default mode doesn't work. Now I
like my desktop to be larger then my display so I have a Virtual desktop
of "1600x1200". In your case simply comment out the virtual line and
then your desktop will always be the size of your physical display.
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "640x400"
        ViewPort 0 0
# Virtual "1600x1200"
    EndSubsection

Adding a line "DefaultColorDepth 24" will always set the default
colordepth to 24 bit per pixel.

I know what you're doing wrong! You're trying to install Netscape

Yeah, I was running Netscape 6 in Windows and it was pretty slow.
Almost unusable. I was hoping it would be faster in Linux. But, I
think I may have a theory as to what I'm doing wrong. I'm running
through a proxy server, and maybe the install program gets to the part
where it wants to download the files, but it can't find the server, so
it just gives up and exits. I don't know. Anyone know if there's a way
to set up RedHat so everything knows about the proxy? I can't figure
out how to work lynx with the proxy, and I can't make ftp work (the
console prog.).

I think this is the best way.

1.Mount the new partition say on /mnt/newsys

2.Execute the following

$ tar cf - /bin | tar xf - -C /mnt/newsys

3.Do this for each of the directories in / i.e /bin, /etc, /home, /usr,
/sbin, /var, ...anything else I've left out. Don't do this for the /mnt
partition on which the new disk is mounted. It will fail.

4.Of course, if you have multiple partitions, you can mount them under
/mnt/newsys as required.

Thanks for your help but I decided to just grab my precious X
configuration and reinstall back to Redhat. The list of little things
that needed fixing was just adding up too fast, while the only oddity I
noticed with RH was that xf86configure created a file that startx
couldn't read (but luckily I saved a working one from my corel
experiment)

try using supermount (fs=vfat)... you won't have to manually mount the disk
each time
your users want to access it.

Ive run a dedicated quakeworld lan server on this cpu befor running
win95...pings got
pretty high..50-90ms but i think it was due to ram and hard drive speed..
Since Linux has networking as its core I thought Id try running a dedicated
QW server using Linux to see if the pings would improve..winX OS's arn't
very good at multitasking so a change in OS seemed like a good chance
for me to try Linux and to see for myself what improvements, if any, Linux
has
in this scenario.
I never got to the stage of actually running QW so Im not sure if i would
have
needed to install X or KDE or some other program. Ill try again in the near
future.......I was most impressed with how easy DHCP was to set up on this
project given my virgin state with this OS, and the very low powered system
specs.

BTW..the uninstall went smoothly, I think due to the fact I used the boot
from
floppy option with this install, I took christopher's advice and booted from
a win98 boot disks.

Thanks for all your help.

That should teach you. :-)
Don't move ahead until a step is finished.
DiskDruid will NOT allow you to make a /boot beyond cyl. 1024
Use the fdisk option to partition (A checkbox in the upper right corner
IIRC)

That's correct, but it doesn't need to be a separate partition.
If / succeeded, just let /boot be a part of it.

You do this.
mkdir /mnt/iso
mount -t iso9660 /path/to/thefile.iso /mnt/iso -o loop
Now just cd to /mnt/iso you got your files there , copy them somewhere else

Lynx can be made to use a proxy server by setting the http_proxy shell
