Subject: How to install linux in laptop without CD drive
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 09:25:41 GMT
Hi,
I am a newbie in Linux. I have Red Hat Linux 6.2 Deluxe and would like to
install it in a Toshiba Satellite T2130 laptop. The laptop has a 486 processor
with a floppy and a 500 MB hard drive, no CDROM drive. The laptop has been
sluggish using Windows so I am thinking that Linux will run more decently on
this system. I am only going to install Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux on this
system and maybe some internet surfing using a PCMCIA modem. I also would like
to be able to connect to our Windows NT network file server.
Does anybody have any suggestion on how I may go about installing it in the
laptop?
Thanks.

Subject: Help with DualBoot Problem Please
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 09:27:26 GMT
Hi,
I'm running Redhat 6.2 on /dev/hda1 and I have win98 installed on
/dev/sda1. Both boot up properly on their own.
However, I'm trying to put the option into LILO so that I can boot
windows also from the lilo prompt.
Here is my lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
read-only
root=/dev/hda1
append="mem=128M"
other=/dev/sda1
label=win
table=/dev/sda
loader=/boot/chain.b
Linux will boot up fine, but Windows will not. All I get is a message
saying "Please insert system disk... press any key when ready"
I've tried lots of other settings, including specifying "linear" in
the conf file and remapping BIOS drives like below, but nothing seems
to work.
map-drive=0x80
to=0x81
map-drive=0x81
to=0x80
I've read the man pages and all the how-tos I can get my hands on,
as well as every relavent message posted in the NGs
but my setup is even simpler than others and I can't get this to work!
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Boot from your windows bot floypy and do sys C: hda1 has to be mounted as an MS

Subject: IRQ timeout errors on hdb - RH 6.2
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 10:40:51 GMT
Hello,
I have RH 6.2 running on a system with two IDE hard drives connected as
master/slave to the primary IDE controller on my motherboard.
I recently began seeing this message in my logs and it seems to me that my
hdb device maybe "heading from that big pile of computer equipment in the
sky" (about to crash)
Can anyone provide some insight?
kernel: hdb: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
kernel: ide0: reset: success
kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x79 { DriveReady DeviceFault SeekComplete
DataRequest Error }
kernel: hdb: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound}, LBAsect=196685,
sector=131614
kernel: ide0: reset: success
kernel: hdb: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
kernel: ide0: reset: success
If so, then what is the best way to replace the hdb without re-installing RH
6.2?
Thanks for you assistance in advance

These are actually controlled by inetd -- make sure it is installed and

Subject: Root filesystem read-only, NOT fixed by section 10.11 in the FAQ
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 11:21:35 GMT
My root filesytem is coming up read-only and I for the life of me I
can't figure out why.I rebooted the box correctly ( I SWEAR I used
shutdown -r now) and the root filesystem came back read-only. I cannot
get in unless I boot in single mode or with a rescue disk. I have run
e2fsck -f on ALL my partitions. My fstab looks good, and I don't know
what other files to look at. The last thing I get is Init: id X
respawning to fast : Disabling for five minutes. I get 6 of them ,
numbered 1 through 6 and they just keep repeating. But higher then that
I see all the stuff trying to start dying saying "filesystem is read-
only". I read and reread the FAQ, but other then "run e2fsck" thats all
it says. My system is a redhat 6.1 based install. Any help would be
greatly apreciated.

Subject: Dual Head notebook
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 11:30:54 GMT
I want to set up my notebook as a dual head machine (ie 2 screens running
side by side to double my desktop size). It works using win 98 and I would
like to know if I can set up something similar under Linux.
I have a Compaq Armada M700 with a Rage Mobility-P 8Meg AGP graphics card.
Under Windows the internal and external screens can be configured as 2
independant screens (as in a dual head configuration). There appears to be
separate I/O and memory addresses for internal and external ports but they
share the same IRQ.
XFree86 version 4.0.1 lists support for the Rage Mobility-P but I can't seem
to find info on setting up a dual head system.
Any thoughts?

I can pass parameters to kernel with lilo (to detect second network

floppy (bzImage)?
With rdev I can only set up video, root disk but how can I tell kernel
to detect my second network card?

yes (add 10.0.0.2 as default gateway to /etc/route.conf)
try changin /etc/rc.config (errr, is it the same in Mandrake? I use SuSE)
there is a paramter (nameserver = (as an example) 10.0.0.3 10.0.0.4 (space
delimited))

When I type the df command at the $ prompt, it gives the values of all
my partitions EXCEPT /mnt/floppy AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO. I have Linux
Mandrake 7.1 now but when I had LM7, I used to have all my floppies
display the values with the df command.
The df values are very useful because you will know how much remaining
memory space you have left.

Start with this.
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/gotchas/6.2/gotchas-6.2-6.html#ss6.2
There's more to install but that will get XFree86 installed.
Then you can start adding the Gnome or KDE RPMs.

I've got no idea what's altering your /etc/resolv.conf, but you might
try changing its permissions to read-only and see what complains.
As for internet access via the NT box - NT will forward IP packets
between NICs, if configured to do so, but I don't think it'll forward
packets between an NIC and dial-up adapter without Proxy Server (even if
it did, you'd still need a proxy server to get forwarding to the
Internet to work - your LAN's IP addresses are private ones, not ones
registered with internic.net). I think your best bet is either to buy
some proxy software for the NT or move the ISDN connection to your Linux
system and configure it as a proxy server (something I'm considering
doing in my home LAN). Also, Windows 2000, like Windows 98SE, allows
"sharing" of internet connections, which (as I understand it) is proxy
serving over NetBIOS.
