I am having problems with dump command backing up to a Seagate SCSI
Travan Tape Drive.
I typed the following command:
$ /sbin/dump  -0u -f /dev/nst0 /home

and got this result:
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Thu Sep 14 18:13:47 2000
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
  DUMP: Dumping /dev/sda6 (/home) to /dev/nst0
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
  DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
DUMP: estimated 1262381 tape blocks on 32.41 tape(s).
DUMP: Volume 1 started at: Thu Sep 14 18:13:48 2000
  DUMP: dumping (Pass III) [directories]
DUMP: dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
  DUMP: Closing /dev/nst0
DUMP: Volume 1 completed at: Thu Sep 14 18:14:28 2000
  DUMP: Volume 1 took 0:00:40
  DUMP: Volume 1 transfer rate: 958 KB/s
DUMP: Change Volumes: Mount volume #2
DUMP: Is the new volume mounted and ready to go?: ("yes" or "no")

What does this mean? It only took about 30 seconds. How do I backup
/home up using the dump command?

Subject: loadlin problem (boot fails when / mounted ro)
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 16:44:49 -0700

I am having trouble getting loadlin.exe to work properly and I have
looked all over the place trying to fix this one. Here's the problem,
if I use the command
shell=c:\boot\loadlin.exe c:\boot\2217 root=/dev/sdb1 ro vga=771
in the config.sys loadlin will load the kernel, but when it gets to the
point of re-mounting the root device rw it comes up with a whole bunch
of messages similar to
/etc/rc.d/rc.S:/bin/uname: Permission denied
for each of the commands in in rc.S and as a result will not boot
linux. So, I tried booting linux with the command
shell=c:\boot\loadlin.exe c:\boot\2217 root=/dev/sdb1 rw vga=771
and now it boots, but cannot check the root device on boot plus it does
not shutdown properly because when it umounts the root dev. it then
re-mounts it ro and tries to run /sbin/sync and reboot but gets the
whole Permission denied thing again. Anyway, any help here would rule.
BTW, I have linux on sdb1, dos/win on sda1, swap on sda5 and then two
sr's, no IDE stuff, and an Adaptec 2930 controller...

OKAY thanks for your responses. This is how we fixed it.

We booted into lilo from the hard-drive, and at the LILO prompt typed:

boot: linux -s -init=/bin/sh

This allowed us to log in single-user mode, and run the 'sh' shell and fix /etc/passwd.

THANKS AGAIN!!

My setup is kind of lazy.

Main linux box, on 24x7
I have my ISP supplied IP on eth0
I have another IP 192.168.1.1 on eth0:0 (netcfg makes this easy)
junkbuster is set to work w/ 192.168.1.1 instead of the standard 127.0.0.1

Windoze box, pretty much only used for printing
The windoze box is 192.168.1.2 and netscape is set to use
192.168.1.1 as the proxy.

Subject: Re: loadlin problem (boot fails when / mounted ro)

I use nearly the identical command (aside from the "shell=" part) and I use
the command from a file "linux.bat" that's called via a standard vanilla
config/autoexec/dos triple-boot menu setup which doesn't execute any other
commands at all. Here's the command:

c:\loadlin\loadlin d:\redhat\kernels\vmlinuz.dvd mem=256M root=/dev/hdb3
ro vga=3

I'm not sure what effect using "shell=" has when launching anything other
than command.exe, but on the off-chance that it *does have some effect,
it's probably worth a shot at trying just your command from a "safe dos
prompt". (no config or autoexec executed at boot). I can't imagine that the
"ro" parm is anything but correct considering the linux boot sequence.

I was just modifying some params on my ext2 file system having booted from
a floppy and mounted /dev/hdb3 ro. I used a util suggested by someone in
here called "tune2fs" which can only be used on filesystems mounted ro. You
might take a look at the output of "tune2fs -l" since it lists the params
of the superblock and the -l command is pretty much benign so can be used
while the filesystem is up and running. Also take a look at /etc/fstab
since that's where it figures out how to remount that fs rw. Just some
thoughts.

Subject: glibc compilation - what about the compile directory?
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 01:11:35 +0200

Hi there,

could anyone please tell me if it's safe to remove the compilation directory
after having compiled glibc? There's a lot of documentation about how to do
it, what to do and what not to do, but I couldn't find any notes talking
about what's supposed to happen with the directory in which compilation took
place.
Can I remove it? If not why? What do I have to do in order to be able to
remove it (takes up a lot of space that I could use in other ways)?

I have an Intel Pentium 133 MHz
Kernel 2.2.16
glibc 2.1.3
system.

Thanks for any advice

I'd guess dump can't figure out the capacity of the tape. Try

/sbin/dump 0ufs /dev/nst0 800000 /dev/nst0

The trailing s indicates you're going to specify a tape size, in some
units I forget. (In my experience the 800000 appears to work fine for
me, but I should do what I advise below.)

(Note that the options may be lumped together as shown.) If this appears
to work (i.e., dump reports estimated remaining times which look quasi-
reasonable---say an hour or more, depending on the size of the partition
being dumped), things are probably OK. Then look at the man page for dump
for some more sophisticated ways of having the tape capacity deduced.

Good luck.

According to HP

to be precise), this product understands PostScript directly, so you
don't need any special drivers.

I have a 128M swap partition and 24M ram on my P-166, it has swapped
merrily away for six months, the rule I read, said double your ram or
128M...I just stuck in 128. I think the later versions now, have no
128 limit.

On your large partition..my opinion is, although your outline
above is the easy way, and it will work....however, if your system
gets pranged and you must reformat, you will lose all your custom
work you have done in your home partition, so I make home a partition
of its own...ok ,now when you format you will lose all your mail
spools and stuff in var....so I make that a separate
partition...extend this idea until you are in a position to reinstall
without great loss and you are at your optimum 8-)

What (if anything) happens when you go cntrl-alt-backspace? Or
cntrl-alt-delete? (that one is often trapped and does nothing, but
you might get lucky.) I did that once to my monitor but cntrl-alt-
backspace still worked and I was able to back out of it.

If you are able to get it to reboot watch the bootup messages and
type "linux single" (or whatever works on your machine) when it pauses
at the prompt. Then you can get in to your files and fix them by hand.

Good luck,

Read apache doc "Using SetUserID Execution for CGI". Virtual hosts have
to be below the main DocumentRoot in order for suexec to work.

That could work for /~username/ URLs, but not suexec virtual hosts.
