Yes there is. They can use your box to attack others and hide their

That won't matter. Hopefully, you won't find this out the hard way,
but: people likely to hack your box aren't burglars looking for the
silver. They're vandals, looking to do some damage. They may choose
to plant a program on your box that they can use later to do something
malicious to someone else. How will you feel when the FBI comes
calling? OTOH, they may simply cd to root and do `rm -Rf /*' and
leave you to start over from scratch.

It sounds like you are not getting a ppp connection at your end.
After you make your connection, open an xterm and type in `ps -auxw |
grep pppd' and see if you get anything back. I suspect you won't.
If pppd is not running, I suggest running minicom in a console window.
Then, after making the connection, ALT-Q out of minicom (exit without
reset) and run pppd manually. You'll need to look around to get all
the details, I haven't done this in a long time. look in /etc/ppp to
see what the settings are in the scripts there. You have a window of
15-30 seconds after you make the connection before the modem will drop
you at the other end. It's long enough to type in the pppd command.
If that works, you're connected and I think you will then find
yourself `on the net.'

You are almost there. kppp->Setup->Modem->"Query Modem"
Does it find your modem and respond back?
If it does, click on Terminal and try "ATDT123-4567" and see it dials.
If it does, click on "Modem Commands" LOOK HARD AT "DIAL STRING".
It should say "ATDT"
If everything is in place you should be able to dial out using kppp.

Anyone get 2 sblive cards working in the same computer under linux? I
downloaded the linux drivers, and one installs fine with "insmod
emu10k1". I tried renaming emu10k1.o to emu10k2.o and insmod'ing
that, but no dice. I can insmod either one, but only one at a time. I
know this has to be possible somehow...

I am using the slackware-current version, not exactly Slackware 7.1,
I am not sure that makes a difference, but I thought the "current"
version is more update.
Also, the lilo version is 21.6-1, so it should be current enough
to support the >1024 cylinder problem.
The following is my lilo.conf (with all the comments ignored) :
lba32
boot = /dev/hda
delay = 50
vga = normal
image = /vmlinux
root = /dev/hdd1
label = linux
read-only
other = /dev/hda1
label dos
table = /dev/hda
When I run lilo, it gives the following errors :
Warning: BIOS drive 0x83 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x83 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x83 may not be accessible
Added linux *
Added dos
When I boot the machine, the following appears (non-stop) :
L 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 ...........
What did I do wrong ? Or what do I need to do to fix this ?
Thanks very much for any tips. Now I have to floppy boot the system,
a very major inconvenience :(

Hi,
I am trying to connect to the a newly installed RH 7.1 beta linux box
from a Windows2000 client.
When I first started of, I got connection refused. After some search, I
found that I need to edit the
/etc/xinetd.d/wu-ftpd

/etc/xinetd.d/telnet
to change
disable = yes
to
disable = no
Now it doesn't say "Connection refused" but just hang there.
Any suggestions ?

I have a Maxtor RAID 0+1 card. I had to use the driver disk during setup to
get it to recognize the 30 GB Maxtor drive on the Raid controller's primary
interface. "linux dd" or something like that. Have you checked
http://www.asus.com.tw/products/motherboard/driver_ide.html, and downloaded
the A7V Promise Ultra100 driver disk image, yet? Probably if you extract
this image, it will create a driver disk that you can use during the initial
setup..and then you won't have to mess with any settings after the fact.

You can always access them by typing the full path "/sbin/useradd" etc.
Probably the PATH variable isn't set propely. Look at it with "echo $PATH"
It should contain something along the lines of
/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/bin
for users. Root needs access to addictional utilities so its path is more like
/bin::/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/bin
If that's the problem then easiest to do would be to add a line exporting
the sbin directories to your root login shell (most likely in the
/root/.bashrc and\or /root/.bash_profile)
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin:/usr/sbin

Hi,
card: WaveLAN IEEE/802.11 Gold
computer: StrongARM-1110 based handheld, Assabet/Neponset
Cardmgr thinks of my WaveLAN IEEE/802.11 as "Anonymous memory". On the
card, neither LED is on. Does anybody know what the problem is? I
heard that it would be /etc/pcmcia/config.opts. This file specifies the
range for memory and IRQ to detect when a new card inserted.
Unfortunately, I do not know how to decide the range. Does anybody
have a suggestion?
Should I simply tell cardmgr to load wavelan driver when for "Anonymous
memory"? Can this be a short-term work-around? Will this damage the
card or the computer?
Thanks a lot!
