Sounds like your cdrom is mounted w/o exec permissions.
Look at your /etc/fstab file. Add exec to the options
on your cdrom device then mount your cdrom again.
Should work. If all else fails, just copy the file
off of the CD to you HD and try to install from your HD.

You updated to nfs-utils 0.2 (that supports NFSv3), but didn't upgrade/patch
your kernel to support the NFSv3.
(at least that's the same symptoms I get).
I think it's mostly harmless.

Take a look in comp.os.linux.security. Viruses aren't a particular
worry, but there are many things you can do to make your system more
secure against crackers, starting by turning off all unnecessary
services (/etc/inetd.conf and /etc/rc.d/rc3.d - or rc5.d if you boot
straight into X).

know how accurately they report "news" and check their facts and limit

Maybe because the kernel was compiled for another system, not for a laptop
which has a very different architecture from a normal Personal computer. Try
building a new kernel for the laptop then make the floppy!!!

Do you want to restore the Microsoft (tm) =A9 etc. MBR? Or the Linux=20
(lilo/grub/...)
one?
I'm going to assume that you want to restore the Linux one...
and that's easy...
After completing the install, try 'dd' from the first block of your=20
physical drive,
and stow it away. If you want to put it back, dd it again. Should do=20
the trick.
Do it as superuser.
[how did the MBR get messed up, anyway?]
Or, boot from floppy, and redo your lilo (whatever) - this assuming=20
that you've
screwed the thing completely around (and if you don't have an=20
emergency boot
OS floppy, you can download one, and if you don't have a floppy -=20
well, I'm not
too sure - it will be uglier - unless your CD-ROM can boot, or tape=20
drive, or
boot from network)
If you want to put Microsoft (tm) =A9 etc. MBR back, use 'fdisk', as you=
=20
have mentioned.

Hi,
Thanks for your assistance. Ok, I took your advice and created a REAL user on my web
server for the purposes of ftp'ing files from my internal networked machine to my web
server. FYI, I am using the TIS firewall proxies so my line in inetd.conflokks like
this:
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/etc/netacl in.ftpd
and in my /usr/local/etc/netperm-table file, I limit the users who can ftp into my web
server to the IP of my internal network machine so no one from the outside can ftp in.
I
trust that this makes my web server more secure?
Finally, I downloaded, compiled and installed ncftp which has a utility called ncftpput
that allows me to automatically (via cron) schedule file transfers by putting it in a
script (this was my original intention). So I finally have what I wanted.
Thanks again,
Don

Subject: converting bootdisk to loadlin zimage
Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 18:22:40 GMT
Hi,
I've got a bootdisk that works and is unusual in
that respect, since I have a system with MicroChannel,
a SCSI controller not in use, and my hard drive is
neither IDE nor SCSI but is ESDI.
I would like to use loadlin to boot from DOS, but
I can't seem to convert my bootdisk into something
that works. I tried removing the first 106 bytes
(comparing it to a zimage that does boot with loadlin
showed that the first 106 bytes of a boot disk are
a header of some type) but that was unsuccessful.
I would compile a new kernel however when I boot up
via floppy and install the proper device files for
ESDI drives, I can mount the main Linux partition,
create and delete files in it, but not (get this)
read or write them. They are all "not found".
Any suggestions?

On install of RH6.2, I specified to put lilo in the "first partition
of the hard drive" because I heard that the existing lilo that ships with
RH6.2 has the 1024th cylinder problem. I have linux installed on a 15GB drive.
I'm still a bit puzzled.

Hi,
At lilo prompt type: linux 3 (for RH and Mandrake) or
Linux <number> for starting in console mode
Next log as root and type XF86Setup, or xconfigurator
or xf86config and configure your XFree86. I suggest
to use lower values for your monitor and when you'll
have an X screen, try to reconfigure again with normal
parameters.
Bye

Hi,
I suppose you use KDE if you have kudzu. Just start DrakConf
and choose Services or similar name on panel. You can choose
every service you need at boot time. Deselect kudzu and that's
all.
