It is a real external modem, not a winmodem (which is not a modem).
I was also referred to the HOW-TO documents.

Hello,

Having a bit of printer trouble here. I'll mention only one
problem.

I've got the Canon BJC2100 hooked up by way of the cups server
stuff. I can print a testpage fine and printing through kword is
acceptable.

I can't figure out how to get StarOffice to avail itself of the
printer though. How do I use the SO printer config utility
(spadmin) to set up SO to print to the BJC2100.

Something obvious I'm missing but....

Other mysteries abound but that's good for now, if someone can
point me in the right direction.

Not sure what you are asking, but FreeBSD can run many Linux binaries
(probably RH 6.1) using something that I think is called a compat
package. When it recognizes a Linux ELF program it runs it under a Linux
like directory structure containing Linux libs.

However, somewhat problematic was that FreeBSD (at least 4.0) could read,
but not write to RH 6.x ext2 file systems (it could write RH 5.2 ext2).
But RH 5.2 cannot write to RH 6.x file systems either (something changed
in 6.x ext2).

But if you can get Unix sources (instead of binaries only), it is best to
compile them on the system you are running (Linux or whatever).

Did you 'make install' or run /sbin/lilo before attempting to boot the new
kernel? Maybe LILO cannot find your new kernel.

It appears that udf isn't in the list of filesystems that 'auto' checks for.

Hello, there

I'm trying to install a Cardinal modem into a 486 and cannot get it to work.
The initialization string will not execute in minicom, and I cannot type in
a AT command.

The config is:

    serial device: /dev/ttyS3
    BPS/Par/Bits: 115200 8N1

Hardware and software

    486DX-66
    20MByte of Ram
    Red Hat Linux (Kernel 2.2.5-15)
    Cardinal 28.8IV with voice.

I would certainly appreciate anyone's advice.

I figured it out anyway.

I had the wrong permission for /bin/su.

it should be:

-rwsr-xr-x

I should use sudo.

I tried your suggestion and it worked. I get the printout ok at the
end of the job. Now I get a header first and each character is 8
lines high. Looks like the test page from printtool. How do I get
rid of that? Thanx.

That didn't work for me - I had to use a setup
utility called spadmin in the office52/program
directory. It pops open a nice GUI-based
printer installation program, which allows you
to select the driver from those listed and then
to connect to a queue. I have a Brother printer
for which I used the HP Laserjet 4 printer driver,
so my "Installed printers" window reads:

    HP Laserjet 4in queue lp2 (lpr -P lp2)

That works for me. YMMV

thanks for the suggestions -- when this first occurred, it was a curiosity,
and I remember re-fdisking, re-formating, I've lilo'd my head off -- to no
avail. I think that I even tried using the maxtor mbr restore.

I suppose what I should do is try all this again -- it was a long time ago
and I might have missed something. Of course, for less trouble I could just
spend $100, add another hard drive, make it bootable, copy the entire
contents over, and then work with this drive without messing up everything
that is already working ...

Or, I could do what I've done for the last year, i.e. ignore it and continue
to boot from floppy, waste my time somewhere else ...

what a pain.

Subject: Looking for modelines for ViewSonic A70
Date: 23 Feb 2001 05:39:38 GMT

Hi,

I'm running XFree86 4.0.2, with a ViewSonic A70 monitor and an NVidia TNT2.
(Using the basic nv driver - gonna get this working before trying
accelerated).

I can't get X to display at 1280x1024 - 1024x768 is the highest I can do.
I suspect I have to put an explicit modeline in the config file in
order to get this resolution, but I'm not sure what values to use.
I've lost the monitor manual, so I can't get detailed modelines for it
(although I don't think the manual had all that much technical detail
anyway).

The only tech specs I could find are at
http://www.red.it/pnp/monitor/a/a70.pdf (text version at
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:www.red.it/pnp/monitor/a/a70.pdf+ViewSonic+A70+refresh+rate).
The pertinent info is:

 * 1,280 x 1,024 maximum resolution
   Displays a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 1,024; 1,024 x 768 at 87Hz
flicker-free refresh rate for easy viewing.
   1,280 x 1,024 @ 166Hz
   1,024 x 768 @ 187Hz
   800 x 1,600 @ 110Hz
   640 x 1,480 @ 135Hz

<snip>

   Frequency Fh:30-70kHz, Fv:50-180Hz

Anyway, I put these into the XF86Config file hoping it would fill in the
correct modelines automagically:

    Section "Monitor"
      Identifier "ViewSonic A70"
      HorizSync 30-70
      VertRefresh 50-180
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
      ...
      Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "1280x1024"
    EndSection

At 1024x768 everything works fine, but at 1280x1024 the screen simply blanks
out.

I noticed some interesting things in the startup log. In one block, which
I'm not sure exactly how to interpret, the highest listed mode was 1152x870,
so I tried that instead. Here's the output from that:

but X's defaults have too high an hsync, and failing that, 1152x870 should
be usable except that X doesn't know about it. Either way I have to come up
with a modeline, but I don't know how to convert "1280x1024@60Hz" into all
the different values X is expecting. Can someone tell me how to do this (or
provide an alternate explanation of the above logs)?

Thanks,

Hi again everyone!

Never mind my earlier post...I finally figured it out.

In my message below, when I said that GAL's configure program
complained:

> "checking for Glade libraries >= 0.13... configure: error:
> Did not find libGlade installed"

Now, learn from my mistakes: It complained that "libGlade" was not
installed,
so I naturally made the mistake of trying to correct this from the
sources
contained in glade-0.5.11.tar.gz. THIS IS NOT LIBGLADE!!!

After I found it on the 'net, I installed libglade-0.16.tar.gz.

So look carefully at the name of the component that configure could not
find
("libGlade", in my case) and make sure that you download the *correct*
file(s)
to fix the problem.

"libGlade" != "glade"

I'd like to thank those of you who started to put any time-and-effort
into my
question. (Sorry I wasted your time on such a silly mistake, though.)

Did you try loadlin.exe? It works from Win95 -- I don't know about from NT.

So, after re-reading this above quote I check my /proc/filesystems
and saw that udf was listed so mount should be trying for it when
you specify auto as the type. Yes, except I had an /etc/filesystems
that _didn't_ list udf. Now, since I don't have a udf cd to try out
anymore I can't test myself, but, I would suggest adding udf to
/etc/filesystems and see if it'll be detected by mount.

Hello,

I have a nic which works perfectly in linux. If I
install RH7, the card is autodetected & the
required line is added to /etc/modules.conf.

However if I do not configure the card at install
time, how do I configure the card? None of
netconfig or netconf autodetect the card & modify
modules.conf. Which tool should I use to
autodetect the card & modify modules.conf or
atleast tell me the module appropriate for the
card?

Please help,
Pavan

You control this when you create partitions on your disk. Make your
Windows partition the first one, but small enough that your first Linux
partition is within the 1024 cylinder boundary. If you are using
Mandrake's automatic installation, this may be hidden from you, so you
will have to choose a manual option.

With all the options you selected, your kernel is too big in
uncompressed format. The message is telling you to "make bzImage" so
the image will compressed and hopefully become small enough, or to use
loadable modules which get loaded in later thus don't take up space in
the image file. (At this moment, I can't remember what the limiting
factor is for the image size.) Try trimming things out of the kernel,
there are probably a few things in there you won't ever use, or select M
where possible to have things compiled as loadable modules. Or just try
"make bzImage" (or zImage, which is what I had in my notes, I don't know
what the difference is).

Two ways..

1) First, before messing with ANY hard-drive where you have stuff you do not
desire to see vanish before your eyes, BACK UP EVERYTHING YOU WISH TO KEEP.
Use partition magic or some other software under Windows to carve out a
small '/boot' partition above the 1024 cyllinder limit (depending on the
geometry of your hard-drive, it will be around the first 4-8 gigabyte
range -- in reality the /boot partition only needs to be about 16-24
megabytes, just to hold the kernel and all its boot files) AND to utilize
hard-drive space unused by windows as linux partitions as well. The '/boot'
partition and all subsequent linux partitions will be using efs2, while the
Windows portion of your hard-drive is using FAT16 or FAT32. (If you have NT
or 2000, you could be using NTFS, too).

Basically, your hard drive could be seen this way..

<---(24M to Linux /boot) --(Windows FAT32....................<1024
point>.............)..(/ , swap, /home, /usr, /var, /tmp, etc)-->

If I had a chart, I could map it out more clearly.

or

2) Buy a second hard-drive, and install Linux on it, instead.

I learned the first way, and opted for the 2nd approach after I decided that
I needed to be safe with data that I'd collected and had not been able to
back-up to CD right away.

Besides, I can hose the 2nd drive all I like, and not have to worry about
fouling up a Windows partition.

The first assumes that you understand the differences between a FAT32
partition, and an efs2 partition as well, and have the tools available to
try and re-partition your hard-drive in a manner where you minimize the risk
of losing data.

The second assumes that you're at least comfortable with installing a second
hard drive physically into your computer's case. Personally, it was easier
to connect a hard-drive than it was to safely re-partition my original
hard-drive to support another operating system, but the experience was well
worth it. I love a good challenge any day. :>

Good luck.
