At the LILO prompt try "ide0=ali15xx".
Or, if that doesn't work, "ide<adapterno>=<baseadress>[,<controlregister>[,<irq>]]".

Help installing on Intel D815EEA board
I have Intel D815EEA motherboard, and trying to install RedHat Linux 6.2. I
also have Adaptec 19160 SCSI card, which didn't give me problems during
installation.
I finished intalling Linux, but can't seem to get the display configured.
Currently, everything is *so* big that nothing fits in the screen. All the
icons/windows are 3 or 4 times larger than the screen.
I launched Xconfigurator from runlevel 3 to make some changes, but no luck.
I'm asked to choose a card, but which one should I choose?
I installed XFCom_i810-1.2-3.i386.rpm from Intel website. I'm still having
problems.
By the way, what is XFCom_i810-1.2-3.i386.rpm, and what do I do with it
after installing it.
I read that someone was successful, but he disabled the built-in video
because he had a Matrox card. However, I'm trying to use the built-in
video.
Has anyone successfully installed RedHat Linux 6.2 on Intel D815EEA (w/
integrated video, audio, & LAN) motherboard?
p.s.
I have Sony Multiscan 15sf monitor, but I can't seem to find it in the
monitors list.
p.p.s.
Will RedHat 7.0 be any easier?

Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 02:19:47 GMT
I have my dual boot win95 and mdk 7.1 machine connected with @home. I am
still using win95 for email, although I would like to switch that to linux.
I can browse the internet just fine, and have even been able to download and
read mail fine too. But my question is this. Currently, I administer my
mothers website which she uses for business. I use a alias thru her website
that redirects that mail to my @home account. Is it possible to have several
aliases redirect to my @home account, and have those different aliases
belong to separate accounts in linux? For instance, can I have
[EMAIL PROTECTED] which is redirected to [EMAIL PROTECTED] be
accessible only to the account richard? And could I have
[EMAIL PROTECTED] redirect to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and have that be
accessible only to the account nicole?
I have been trying to read up on this, but I haven't found anything that
seems to address this issue. I would appreciate any input that anyone might
have.

Stay away from 2.4.test-pre-alpha-whatever until 2.4.10 is available.
Unless you like kernel hangs at boot.

I'm too new to Linux to choose "the best" distribution for my needs, so
I've installed the following on a spare system with P55C 233 CPU and 96
Mb RAM:
common data /dev/sdc6 0.5 Gb
swap /dev/sdc7 125 Mb
RedHat 6.1 /dev/sdc8 1.1 Gb
Corel Linux 1.1 /dev/sdc9 1.1 Gb
Mandrake 7.1 /dev/sdc10 1.1 Gb
FWIW, I also have the 1.2 CLOS CD and the 6.2 RedHat CD and anticipate
moving to a larger HD to provide more space so that all packages I might
ever need can be installed up front instead of trying to save space by
leaving some out before knowing how to choose what's unnecessary, and
replacing the above with the newer versions. On the bigger disk I should
think an extra partition for shared packages would also make good sense.
The point of the exercise is to gain some familiarity with the different
distros and their default VWMs in order to choose one to possibly use to
eventually take over my daily chores currently performed by OS/2. Most
of what I do is either web related and run in native OS/2 apps, or not,
and handled by DOS apps.
Netscape is the one app I'm already familiar with which is available in
native versions for windoze and OS/2 and Linux, so that is where I'd
like to begin my investigation into some of the workings of Linux that
differ from what I'm used to. Right now I have three separate Netscapes
for Linux: RH 6.1 has 4.08, CLOS has 4.7, and ML has 4.73. I've
downloaded the i386 gz of 4.75, so I'd like to upgrade the other three
by removing them and installing 4.75 only once, and the main question I
believe is more of a philosophical one than a practical one: Where
should I install it?, followed by: How?
I've yet to find a suitable HOWTO or FAQ that addresses making such
choices, nor one that explains the significance and practical aspects of
shared libraries. Suggestions and/or doc pointers would be much
appreciated.
Part 2: I think DOSEMU would be a good next step following the Netscape
exercise. Attempting to execute dos in RH 6.1 gives me error messages,
in ML 7.1 "bad command or file name", and CLOS 1.1 a DOS prompt
indicating version 3.31 compatibility, and I need at least v5.0
compatibility for my apps. So logically, I should remove whatever DOSEMU
is currently installed and install a shared newer version, assuming one
exists. Suggestions and/or doc pointers would also be much appreciated
on this subject.

Are you using the right file as kernel ?
You supposed to use /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/(b)zImage and not
/usr/src/linux/vmlinux .

Dave:
Are you using RH 6.2? RH now includes a dialer, RP3, that makes the
process for dialup connections much easier. Consider upgrading if
possible.
There are a number of HOW-TOs on the RedHat site that go into detail on
this process. As I recall, I used xminicom to dial and authenticate, quit
xminicom without hanging up the line and could then browse, e-mail, etc.
It took several hours to get the process down as changes must be made to
the ppp scripts. RP3 makes life much easier.
Good luck

If you have cfdisk on your system, it gives the
option of showing space in MB.

Subject: Problem: Win95 install on Linux machine
From: errand_boy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 05:00:46 GMT
I have an old Compaq desktop with 2 Gig HDD, CD-ROM & Floppy drives,
64Meg RAM, with Slackware 3.5 installed on it.
I also have a DOS 6.22 Boot disk, and a licensed Win95 install package
on CD-ROM.
How can I install win95 on this HDD so that it will be the default OS?
I will not be using Linux much, if at all, for the next 3 months, and
so I don't mind if I have to format and start fresh. Having Linux on
one partition and win95 on another would be fine, or having just win95
would be fine, for the next school term.
Can someone help me out?

OK, I have a modem on ttyS1 and I have to do the following to make it work:
setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq 7
I know ttyS1 is supposed to go with irq 3 but it didn't. irq 7 worked fine
for me with no other modifications however.
Once you find something that works and you want it to happen
automatically, you can put the setserial command toward the end of your
rc.local file (in RH) so it runs on every bootup.

I don't have any ethernet card so I can't comment on what is wrong there,
but see what happens if you just setserial the modem someplace else. If
irq 7 doesn't work try some other unused irq lines until you hit on a good
one.
Look at both dmesg and cat /proc/interrupts to see what may be unused.
Both those will only tell you what your software thinks not what may
actually be going on, so take em with a grain of salt.
Also if you look at the manual for the modem it might have diagrams on how
to set its jumpers for a different irq if nothing else works. I didn't
have to go that far though.
Try some of this easy stuff first and if it doesn't work you can attack
the ethernet card part instead.
