Subject: wordnet-1.6 Any Users Under RH6.1
I've used the WordNet lexical reference system several times in the past
with an earlier RedHat, FreeBSD, and also currently have a copy of it
installed on a Debian 2.2 system, on which it works quite well. I was
wondering if anyone has installed it and made the changes in, or
installed the required Tcl 7.6p2 Tk 4.2p2 over or around the versions
that are default with RedHat 6.1. to get the GUI portion of it to work,
and if so what changes you had to make and how did you go about doing
it? I've tried several things that I can't actually document offhand,
but have had no success with it other than getting it to run console or
command line. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
System is AMD K-6 2/550, RH 6.1 running 2.4.0-test8 kernel. None of the
default RH libs have been upgraded or changed other than XF86 4.01
installed. Default Gnome and KDE DT environment.
Thanks in advance.

i'm trying to install rh 6.2. i thought i had everything straight until i
launched for the first time. it launched into the command line, i logged in,
and it just kept me there. i couldn't figure out how to get into gnome.
after i thought about it, i realized that the install program never asked
about lilo, and on the launch, it never asked me which OS i wanted to run
(i'm running win98 on the first partition).
i think the problem lies in the install option. i chose gnome workstation.
in the manual, it says that workstations and servers don't need lilo. i'm on
a stand-alone system, but i don't seen any other option suitable for me.
it's not a server. i don't want to upgrade.
thanks for any help

Subject: HELP !!! Need to Remount NTFS partition on WIndows NT
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 12:49:32 -0700
Hello Everybody,
I'm a linux newbie.
I recently decided to install linux on my desktop. I had lot of space on my
NTFS partition, so I decided to resize NTFS. I installed on Linux Mandrake
in the resulting empty size.
But something has gone wrong after that. Now when I boot back to windows NT
I cant find my NTFS partition ( which used to D: ) at all. However, I
verified with few disk partition software that NTFS partition still exists.
Can anybody please tell me how can I mount this NTFS partition back in
Windows ?? I have some important stuff in that partition. NT Disk
Administrator shows that partition as Unknow type, but the exact size.
Thanks in Advance,
-rakendu

I'm in (kind of) the same boat you are. I finally got the partitioning
figured out today after doing lots and lots of reading, so here's my
opinion:
the best way is to use a program called FIPS. It's on your linux install CD
under the dosutils folder. copy the fips, restrorrb (very important) and
error files to a windows boot disk. boot with the floppy and run fips. it
will ask you if you want to backup your current partition scheme. do it. it
will save you later.
this is what they don't tell you: you have to set your linux boot partition
below the 1024th cylinder. this made absolutely no sense to me a few days
ago, but basically, 1024 cylinders=8.1 gigs, or about that much. If you
partition so that your linux partition has all of the remaining space (12
gigs) you should be fine.
after it repartitions, reboot with the redhat cd. when it comes to
partitioning again, you'll have to DELETE that new partition you just made
(because it's fat 32). you'll then want to ADD about four more partitions.
i've read many opinions about how many partitions linux should have. make
sure of one thing: the /boot partition should be the first one (so that it
fits below the 1024th cylinder). 10 megs for that should be enough. then,
you need a swap partition, root, and usr. to be honest, this is my latest
snag, so i'll just stop here. good luck.

Subject: dpkg install error - ldso
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 20:19:17 GMT
Would like to install NTP on a couple of Debian servers we are using and
found that I need to update the version of libc6 and ldso before I can
install NTP. The ldso upgrade is required first, so I have downloaded
the .deb file and run the following command:
dpkg -i ldso_1.9.11-9.deb
The following error is generated:
dpkg: regarding ldso_1.9.11-9.deb containing libc6, pre-dependency
problem:
libc6 pre-depends on ldso (>= 1.9.11-2.1)
ldso is installed, but is version 1.9.10-1.
dpkg: error processing ldso_1.9.11-9.deb (--install):
pre-dependency problem - not installing libc6
Errors were encountered while processing:
ldso_1.9.11-9.deb
I did not see that ldso had any dependencies, so I cannot understand the
reference to libc6.
Can anyone explain, what the error is telling me.
TIA

In order to configure your ipchains, all you really need to do is read the
man pages on ipchains and use the switches accordingly. Ipchains are uses
to allow deny regect and things like that for specific IP addresses on
your network. By using the switches you can configure your ipchains and it
really should not be all that difficult, however, I am still in class to
attain my LCA and I am not completely knowledgable I still have 2 tests to
go before I am done so please take this with a grain of salt.........Is
there any way, that you could explain to me, in a real "layman way how to
subnet"? It is confusing even though I have some knowledge of
networking.......

Subject: execvp input/output error?
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 20:38:15 +0000 (UTC)
Here's the specifics:
Mandrake 6.0, v2.2.9-19
486, 8 meg ram, 515 meg hard drive
I successfully installed Mandrake on this PC, it will ultimately be used
as a firewall and a DSL gateway for a home network. The initial boot
after the install is successful,
although I do get a message that says "hard drive optimisation for hda [
FAILED ]". I am able to log on, finish setting up the network, ping other
machines etc. Everything
seems to be working fine.
Subsequent re-boots, however, are a different story. Now the "hard drive
optimisation for hda" is OK, but the next step fails, badly:
Creating /mnt/disk
execvp: input/output error
and the boot process stops there. Rebooting again shows all sorts of
disk corruption and file system problems.
Is it possible that the hard drive optimisation, when it didn't fail,
somehow hosed my disk? It is possible to turn off this optimisation?
BTW, I re-installed from scratch a second time with the exact same
results.

Subject: How can I hide printers?
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 21:43:46 +0100
I have a school network, WIN2k server, fibre gigabit backbone with 5
classrooms each with 30 Win9x clients. The classrooms are not in the same
building - 2 of them are 600 yards apart! Each classroom has a network
printer, running off a JetDirect card.
Students can 'see' all the printers and so, of course, they sometimes print
to the wrong one (not always by accident, I guess!!). I've been told that
the only way to hide printers is to run WIN2k clients - that means 150 WIN2k
licences plus more RAM in each pc. (So that's how Gates got so rich!!).
If I install a Linux server with Samba, can I configure it so that each
classroom is a group and can see only the printer in that room? Or is there
anohter way....
