Printing should work fine if you have a configured printer.
What OS are you using? Linux, i presume - but if you are running RedHat,
try 'printtool' to set up a printer.

You probably have a 't' too much. Or - if that does not fix the problem -
perhaps you want to change it to:
1:2345 respawn:/bin/alogin tty1
But I am no expert...

The story continues (after some time off). If I load the modules
manually (parport parport_pc and lp) using no parameters I am
able to do:
cat /etc/passwd > /dev/lp0
as many times as I like and I get printout. If I try /lpr/ or GUI
front ends then nothing prints. /lpd/ is running (no error messages
that I can find). Things end up in the queue, but no printing. My
brain hurts....
Configuring X to work with a 10 year old monitor was a piece of p***

It's not NT that hangs, it's lilo (the Linux loader). Basically,
installing NT has corrupted your Linux installation, so Linux won't
load, while NT won't load as the Master Boot Record is now set up for
Linux not NT. If you created a Linux boot disk, you can recover from
this, if not then things could get tricky! To complete the NT
installation, you need to restore the MS MBR using the DOS command FDISK
/MBR (warning - this removes lilo from the MBR!). Naturally, this
requires you to have a DOS system disk with the basic utilities on it.
Next time you reboot, you'll go right back into the NT installation
where you left off. You then need to boot to Linux using the boot
diskette and edit the lilo configuration to put the loader somewhere
sensible (say, the boot sector of the Linux partition) and use a utility
like bootpart (you can download it free from the Web) to create an entry
in the NT boot menu to load to Linux. You can also use Lilo to boot to
NT, though I prefer the NT boot menu as it's slightly more idiot-proof!

Mandrake is a distribution based on Red Hat and optimized for i586
processors. I think I'm right in saying Mandrake 7 is based on Red Hat 6
point something (probably 6.1). It's much of a muchness - Mandrake has a
slight bias to KDE and Red Hat a slight bias to Gnome. Both work fine on
most systems, though Mandrake claims to be faster on Pentiums thanks to
the optimization. Take your pick!

Hi ,
I use Suse 7.0 on a linux client and a NT PDC
for authentication . Thus i installed samba and
pam_smb to get the passwords from NT.
This works ok, problems are there if i want to
log in with a user that only exists under NT.
To create users automatically i ve added the
following in /etc/smb.conf :
add user script = /path/useradd % u
This works great if i am acessing from NT.
Here is my /etc/pam.d/login file:
#%PAM-1.0
#auth requisite /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok #set_secrpc
auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so

auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
#auth required /lib/security/pam_homecheck.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_env.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_mail.so
account sufficient /lib/security/pam_unix.so
password required /lib/security/pam_pwcheck.so nullok
password required /lib/security/pam_unix.so nullok use_first_pass
use_authtok
session required /lib/security/pam_unix.so none # debug or trace

Does anybody know how to change this to login on
the linux client without having a valid linux user .
Thanks in advance,

It's been several years since I used tin from an NNTP server, since the
reader threads so slowly (I found slrn, on the other hand, to be
blisteringly fast, which is why I still use it --groups which took 5-10
minutes for tin to thread could be done by slrn in seconds)
Anyway, set the NNTPSERVER variable in your shell to the address
of your news server, then try tin -r and see whether you have better
luck. For some reason, sometimes /etc/nntpserver just doesn't seem to cut
it.

if your printer is really on line...it should have been detected...
i have a different canon printer which *was* detected and identified...only

Without a boot floppy:
LILO: linux single
..
.
< startup stuff>
bash#
You are in single user mode. Make sure you have a copy of a "vi" quick
reference or someone who knows how to use a simple editor.
Now go over to the /etc directory
go into the hosts file and put in the the ip address that is to be yours
next to your computer's name.
Next go into sysconfig directory . there, move into the "network-scrips"
directory. Inside you will find ifcfg-eth0 or something. Open that file :
bash# vi ifcfg-eth0
You will find the entries for the old network setup.
Change them to what your network administrator recommends.
Next,
go to /etc/resolv.conf and enter the ip address of a DNS server here .
now try to reboot and see if it comes up.
The first thing that you should do is turn off sendmail ( the Mail server )
if you are not using it. While you are at it, turn off "named" , which is a
DNS server running on your computer ( you won't need it as you'll be using
another one on the network hopefully ) .
That should take care of it.
PS: If the network can't be reached, that should not prevent a boot up.
There will be the local loop ( lo which is 127.0.0.1). Your boot up can
take several minutes if something like sendmail is started on boot up, and
your network settings are incorrect .
Hope This Helps.

Just a few clarifying points.....
|Does your system know it's full name _AND_ IP address? Or are you

|until a DNS request times out on all of the servers listed in
|/etc/resolv.conf?
Actually, when I first got the cable modem, I think the addresses were
static. I was given
co723987-a.kico1.on.home.com and the corresponding IP address. Not
having any idea on how to set up the system (and the techs were linux
illiterate), I set co723987-a as hostname (using linuxconf - Red Hat
6.1 at the time). I am now using dhcp protocol but still have
co723987-a as a hostname (otherwise httpd, for instance, will not
load). I have in my /etc/hosts
file
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain co723987-a
now....can anybody tell me if this is a no-no? Basically, "co723987-a"
is historic and I want to change it to something. Am I correct in
assuming that I don't need a hostname, per se, when the dhcp daemon has
obtained an IP address for my card?
|Do you get the same address every time? Stick it into /etc/hosts

It's quite easy. Windows reads the partitiontable, and starts dealing
out drive letters on what it finds there. All partitiontypes windows
knows of, are assigned a drive letter. If an extended partition exists,
it will be assigned a drive letter, even if all the logical partitions
inside are unknown. (Windows just never assumes this to happen) Creating
a linux extended partition prevents windows from assigning a drive
letter to it in the first place, but *so be carefull* will also prevent
windows from finding any FAT partition inside it. Hope this clears it
out even more to you, and to others that might use deja.com and read up
on this post later on.

I am using version 2.2.5-15 of the kernel.
I'd like - first time in my life - to recompile it,
so to patch it with the international crypto options.
Unfortunately, a look at <make menuconfig> assured me that
I was on the way of many problem: not been a kernelhacker,
I'm not sure about many of the Yes/No/Module options.
Where can I find a premade .config file that assures me
to obtain a working kernel on a "typical" machine?
Say, for example, the kernel shipped with common distros.
If I can obtain it, I can modify it by just changing
the few options I need.
Thanks for any help

I tried installing the NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-5.rh7rc2.i386.rpm, but it seems
that driver has been compiled with kernel 2.2.16-21, and rh7 final uses
2.2.16-22.
I worked around that by doing an insmod -f NVdriver, but when starting X
using the new driver, it fails with a "received signal 11". (and yes, i also

Any ideas? Or do i just have to wait for NVidia to release rh7 drivers?
