Do yourself a favor and get a real distro like SuSE, RedHat, or Mandrake.
Corel Linux is mainly just a frontend for its office suite. I say this
from experience, it was my first distro. I personally recommend SuSE.

did u upgrade pppd as well? u have to based on info in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes
You need at least v2.4 for pppd

maybe your System.map file that was created after u recompiled; did u
copy it from /usr/src/linux to /boot ?

su to root and check /var/log/messages for errors , that should be your

Most files have "-rw-r--r-- root root" but there are many exceptions: shadow,
smbpasswd, su1, etc. On some distros (SuSE), there are scripts to restore
permissions. You also should check the xserver logfile to find out what files
have insufficient perms.

Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 06:16:33 GMT

Hi All,
OK, it's 1:00 am in the morning and no, I don't have 2.4.2 kernel running.
This is what I've done so far:
 1. Rebooted with the 2.1 kernel and fdisk'd the /dev/hda to 'rewrite' the
partition table.
Still would not boot 2.4.2 kernel.
 2. . Rebooted with the 2.1 kernel and removed the RPM's 1.19 for e2fsck
and devel pkgs.
Installed 1.18 e2fsck, then removed that , and reinstalled 1.19.
Recompiled kernel 2.4.2, still no boot.
3. Read and reread the /Documentation on ide.txt, revealing no clues at
all.
4. Tried to recompile kernel with 'old ide' support. Nope, no go, wouldn't
even see the /dev/hda then.

I asked Pavan to provide a /usr/src/linux/.config for me, and he said he
might be able to get it to me today. If any of you have one, please send it
to me, as some comparisons would help me discern 'what' I'm missing or
'what' I shouldn't have added. Another thing that doesn't seem to be
working on boot is it can't find Stty0 (i don't know if I spelled that
right), and I don't know if that's important or
not............aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggggghhhh, I'm going to sleep.
TIA and 'WE WILL SOLVE THIS PROBLEM!' I will not be denied having a 2.4.2
kernel!
Thanks,

u need to provide more info if u expect someone to help
where is LILO installed? what does your /etc/lilo.conf look like?

u will need a rescue/boot floppy to get to a prompt in order to view it

Hi All,
Forgot all the steps, but I also retro'd back to 2.95 GCC and recompiled the
kernel, no go, still detecting the all the ide0/1, /dev/hda /dev/hdb etc,
finds all the drive parms, etc, mounts VFS on /dev/hda, but when the e2fsck
goes to run, is says can't find a good ext2 file system, which we know is
hogwash, because I boot right up with my old 2.2 or 2.1 (who knows), and it
boots/detects fine. I wouldn't say that e2fsck is broke, I would say
whatever the kernel is using to pass the drive info to e2fsck is broke, but
I'm no expert, I'm just using the logic that 1.19 finds the harddrives fine
with the old kernel.......

open a text editor, write your code, save it with a .c extension for C

run 'gcc -o filename filename.c' for compiling the C program
run 'g++ -o filename filename.cpp' for doing a C++ program

it can't find any snd_cards in -lasound BECAUSE there is no linkable
libasound

It found the headers for libasound but not libasound itself, it seems

try running /sbin/ldconfig and try it again.

LI means that the first stage boot loader was able to load the second
stage boot loader but has failed. E.g. due to a geometry mismatch or
by moving /boot/boot.b

Use fdisk /mbr to restore the MBR. Use a rescue disk to boot Linux.
Check lilo.conf, and change linear to lba32 to overcome the 1024
limitation. (I use RH 7.0)

If you don't have a boot disk then:-

Boot from the CD, and type at the prompt
boot: linux rescue

bash# fdisk /dev/hda
p to see all filesystems
q to quit

bash# mknod /dev/hda7
bash# mkdir /hda7
bash# /hda7/usr/sbin/chroot /hda7
bash# mkbootdisk 2.2.12-20

follow the instructions and reboot.

Hope this helps.

First of all it is MBR ((M)aster (B)oot (R)ecord) and not MRB ;o)

yeah this is a known "feature" of Win98! If it is run and detects
something in the mbr that is not from its own (e.g. LiLo) it eliminates
it. Mostly the consequence of that is that the PC doesn't boot anymore
:(
If you boot from an old DOS or Win95 Bootdisk and run "fdisk /mbr" the
mbr will be rewritten.
Win98 should boot up again after that. Thr only way to boot Linux in
such a System is to use
2 HDDs (and make the Linux HDD primary Master) or to run LiLo from
Floppy ...

Hello,

boot from CD1 and type:

manual

at the lilo boot prompt, this way yast1 will be started, now let yast1 load
modules automagically and try to install, the book
that came with your distro should explain more, if you don't have it handy,
it's on the CD too.

Good luck
