Switch to Mandrake, they have a package called Numlock gives you numlock
in X at bootup.

I'm no real expert on this, but I think the cd-kernel is not fitted for
your machine. I've had this some timnes too, with different distro's and
pc's. It doesn't mean your computer can't run linux, just the "kernel" (=
like command.com, but with much, much more systems included, like network
support) on the cd doesn't work. The most simple way to install the cd
you've got is to boot from a diskette. Knowing RedHat, there should be some
diskette images on the disk, but I don't know where... It shouldn't be too
hard to find :-)
The disk should boot, and then you can go on with installing. Be sure to
install things like "kernel sources" or "kernel developement". It may be
that after the install your machine will not boot. If this is right after
the Power On Self Test, "li", "lilo", or "lilo:", lilo (the LInux LOader,
(allows you to boot NT too) is incorrectly installed. Try to boot with a
"rescue disk" wich you should have made and re-install lilo :-) (sorry, but
that's too complex to explain here, but try "man lilo" and "man lilo.conf")
If it crashes later, with the same message (Kernel panic or isle task
killed or so) the standard kernel crashes. boot with a rescue disk, and
try to make a new kernel (try "less /usr/src/linux-2.<whatever>/README".)
The instructions seem scary, but they can't harm your system any more than
it's already harmed.
(BTW I'm not responsible :-)

the result to come out.

Hi. I have the same problem, an ISP that assigns both the DNS and IP
addresses, and I never got Linux (RH6.2) to work with them. Finally gave
up after four months of getting nowhere, beating my head against the wall.
Read the pppd man pages. Maybe the "usepeerdns" setting will work for you.
I just waiting things out, myself. Sooner or later, pppd will get smart
enough to outwit these Microsoft-Only ISPs.

Try adding this to the bottom of your /etc/lilo.conf
append="mem=128m"
Then run the lilo command to update it:
lilo -v

You have balanced and unbalanced chemical equations. Because the
reactants must produce the products, what is required to balance an
equation is implied, and thus often omitted.

one on the

I agree. Again, it is all a matter of usage, with many aspects
implied. The equilibrium point can be so far towards the products that
the reaction does not "flow" both ways.
In transcription, the raction proceeds forward, with little flow
backwards. I believe the same can generally be said about
installation, especially when done from a set of CDs.
More interesting would be any arguement against the "equality" implied
by the notation. Do you consider the inputs required of the user to be
a basic element of X in my equations? Should I write:
X + I -> P
Where X is the installation medium, and I is the inputs from the user?
Or is it sufficient to note that response files can provide I and can
be included in X and maintain the equality implied?

Hi,
Look for information concerning linux and intel 32bit machines with
more
than 4gig of ram. Need to know how stable linux is with an quad intel
with 8-32gig
of ram. Any experiences with machines gt 4gig of ram running linux is
welcome. Is
it stable, can programs take advantage of the memory gt 4gig? Is 4gig
still max

I never considered it. There is no meaning (from the chemical point of
view) to the --> vs. ==>. They are simply arrows in the notation.
Here is a reference where all of these and other notations are used. I
just don't think it is important to what I was trying to say.

Ok, after some playing around with all the configuration files, now
I can print graphics, postscript, but I can't print plain text :(
When I print text, the output is like :
Line one here
Line two here
Line 3 here
Can someone tell me why ?
My printcap entry is :
lp|lexmark:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lexmark:\
:mx#0:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lexmark/filter:\
:sh:
My "filter" is :
#!/usr/bin/perl
# The above line should really have the whole path to perl
# This script must be executable: chmod 755 filter
while(<STDIN>){chomp $_; print "$_\r\n";};
# You might also want to end with a form feed: print "\f";

I have redhat 6.2 with md5 and shadow passwords.
I recently installed it on a machine and didn't format my old /home
partition. After install everything seemed to be in place, until
I created a user account. I gave the user a home directory from the old
/home partition and recursively changed permissions with chown -R and
chgrp -R
Then I logged out. I had logged in and out a root before with no
trouble.
Now, neither root, nor the user I just created can log in. Went to
single user mode.
I checked /var/log/messages and there was something about pam not being
able to find the password for user [root]. Then there was the attempted
logins.
They look normal in "messages" except that as I've experienced in
runlevel 3, I log in, get the "last login on...." message, and then get
logged out exactly 4 seconds later without ever getting a prompt.
I checked all the login and bash scripts, in short everything to do wiht
the shell, and it looks fine.
I wonder if somehow this PAM got confused when I created the new user,
how to check for it, and how to fix it.
I'm also open to other suggestions.

Lots of information out there about dual-booting with 98 or NT, but I don't
see anything about using Lose2K. Other than that people seem to be doing
it scuccessfully.
And before you say, "You idiot, W2K acts just like Windows<foo> in this
respect," well, I have zero experience with Win95, Win98, and Win2K.
All I know about it is that I'm about to be forced to switch to it from NT.
The last time I did dual-booting, it was with DOS 3.3 and LOADLIN.EXE.
And that was about half a decade ago. I've never used lilo in my life.
(Right now I use NT as a nice X-terminal for some other *nix systems.
Running MICROS~1 OSes is about to become prohibitively complicated at
work, so I'm going to switch my primary work platform to dual-boot Win2K
(required) and Linux (my choice). I don't really know what I'm doing
(I hate PC hardware).)
Pointers to W2K-related FAQs or tips would be muchly appreciated. I will
buy a cup of expensive coffee for you if you ever happen to be in town. :-)
