Did you compile agpgart support into the kernel? Note that it's not
enough to just answer the question about agpgart support with "yes" or
"module". You also have to select the appropriate chipset, or the kernel
will present you with an an agpgart device that's just an empty hull and
responds to all queries with "no such device".
If I remember correctly, you can find the stuff under "character devices"
in the kernel configuration.

Hi
I've finally managed to get DRM/DRI to work under XFree 4.0.2, Linux
Kernel
2.4.1-pre12, with my Matrox G400 (meaning the log now reports that the
module was loaded and dri is enabled when I start X).
However, I do not notice any performance gain on OpenGL/Mesa based
programs. For example, Parsec is so slow that you can actually watch the
individual frames being displayed. I assume that means that Mesa is still
doing it's thing in software, instead of using the hardware acceleration.
Anybody knows how to fix this? (Or have I missed something vital when
setting up X?)
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi people
I just had linux for a 4-5 days..
Installation was originally OK. But I had two problems:
I started off with plain rh7.0
This had problems with the vi8cxxxx sound drivers. (crash)
Then I got the latest kernel and I tried to compile it (gcc2.69)
This solved my sound problen, not compeletely though:
Initially I had problems with sndconfig, which expected the via driver
to be called vi8ccxxxx and not via8cxxxx_audio
I just renamed it and changes the modules/2.4.2/modules.dep file to
point to the changed name.
Then I had problems with ppp device..
(I am sending this through the older 2.2.16-22 on rh70)
My pppd dies..
looking at /var/log/messages
it produces this
Mar 3 01:54:30 localhost pppd[989]: ioctl(TIOCSETD(PPP)): Invalid
argument(22)
Mar 3 01:54:30 localhost pppd[989]: This system lacks kernel support

loaded, or because PPP was not included in the kernel configuration. If
PPP was included as a module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that

Mar 3 01:54:30 localhost modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more
recent than /lib/modules/2.4.2/modules.dep
Mar 3 01:54:30 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0
Hm.. so does pppd expect module ppp???
does modprobe want ppp0?
What does everyone want??
:)
Help me pretty please.

Just been forced (boot device terminal) into a full rebuild on that box,

I screwed around with Xfree86 4.0.1 and couldn't get 3d acceleration to work so
I uninstalled it. I had renaming my old /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 directories b4
instalation and renamed them back to uninstall.
At that point, my login window (I run RH6.2 BTW) stopped having any text on it.
Reinstalling helix gnome didn't help -- also, it's install window had the same
font problem -- no text.
I am now running XF86 4.0.2, but still can't get fonts to work for helix gnome

I installed XF86 4.0.2 via the RH6.2 rpm's. I have installed both the 75 and

Subject: debian lilo/X problems (newbie)
Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 18:12:42 -0800
I've decided to get Linux and been trying to set debian up properly for a
past couple of days. The problems that I am running into are with LILO and
X.
============Problem 1: ==============
LILO:
I am installing it to dual boot. During the setup I've set debian up so it
boots off of harddrive. During setup it told me that I will need to boot up
holding shift then press 'a' and select the partition which I want to boot.
By default (if I don't hold shift) it skips it and goes straight to previous
OS (windows).
Windows is on hda1, debian is on hda4.
When I hold shift and get a prompt to select either partition 1 or A (list
of partitions) or F(Floppy) which looks like so
1AF:
i press 'a'
it changes to
1234F:
i choose '4' (hda4 - debian)
here instead of booting partition 4 it boots hda1 - windows partition.
Is there any way I could make this work like its supposed to?
(I am 100% certain its hda4. However during setup linux saw it as hda7.)
I'm booting with a floppy for now.
============Problem 2: ==============
When I configure X and try to run it my console gets garbled to the point
where I cant read anything. I am able to type but I don't see what I type or
what is being displayed. X doesn't seem to start no matter how long I wait.
I have GeForce2 SDR.
I installed the latest xserver (apt-get install xserver-svga) chose the
proper driver in both xf86config and XF86setup along with all other info.
Same problem remains.
Now to make matters worse it will try and start x automatically during boot
so I never get the login prompt, and get stuck with garble. I've tried to
boot with boot: linux 1
but when I get to the shell and login I don't have any but the basic
commands bound. So trying to xf86config or anything else doesn't work
(command not recognized). Changing to a X11 directory and trying to run it
from there also doesn't help. It seems like a very bare bones shell, I'm not
even able to use more that one terminal...
Could anyone help? I'll try anything.
Thanks

Both LILO and X can be a bitch, I know. I don't even bother with either
anymore, except for X on a new install. As far as LILO, I always use the
alternative, Loadlin. Loadlin has one major disadvantage being that it
requires DOS on some partition.
Some ideas to try until you get LILO to work:
Hack an install floppy by mounting and editing its LILO-related files.
Rawcopy a kernel onto a floppy or even a small hard drive partition. (you can
use rawrite, dd, or even "cp" while in UNIX)
Format a DOS boot disk and set up Loadlin on it.
These are the methods I have used over the years while experimenting. Other
methods of booting are possible, such as using Partition Magic, fucking with
FreeDOS and renaming files, etc. But you get the idea. LILO while it works on
most computers, it doesn't work on ALL computers like DOS does. At times, you
may have to get creative.

Eh, patch 2.2.19 is in beta and might not be stable... Btw. 2.2.18 is
quite stable.
If anything try 2.4.2. I saw a question about supermount... Forget it

Greetings,
I am trying to get an MDA video adapter on my system working under Linux
alongside my 3dfx voodoo3 pci card. I'm not too concerned with X, I'd
just like to be able to map, say, console 2 to the mono screen.
The kernel (2.4.1) has been compiled with the dual-head option enabled,
and the kernel indeed detects it with messages such as "mdacon: MDA
adapter found
Console:Reassigning consoles 13-16 to MDA-2"
However I've not been able to actually put anything on the screen yet
(simply echoing a string to console 13 doesn't seem to do it :). One
thing I did notice is that the mda screen goes totally black when Linux
detects it (ie without the blinking cursor), so it could be a mode
issue? How does one access the mda device, is it listed under /dev?
I have tried the framebuffer utility set, but the problem seems to be at
a lower level than framebuffers.
any help would be much appreciated,
TIA,
Greg Trounson

I am unable to use su when logged in with a regular user.
It works fine as root. I have checked the permissions they are -rwsr-xr-x.
Has anyone seen this before.
