The unbalanced equation is simply incorrect. If you wrote down the unbalanced
form in a highschool chemistry exam, you would get marks off---unless the
teacher was some moronic crackpot from Usenet. You are obviously wrong, and
just don't want to admit that you have no clue what an equation is, or that
your ideas about computer configuration are not only vague and useless, but
some of them border on deranged.

/mnt/data shows up as drwxrwxrwx so it looks OK but I can't seem to
write to it.
I just tried it with only the umask option set to 000 which gives the
above permissions on the mount point and also gives -rwxrwxrwx on all
files. When i try to rename a file using mv I get
Cannot create regular file "xxxxxxx.xxx" :Permission denied
I have also tried msdos, umsdos and vfat all with the same results. It
looks like it should work but it doesn't, certainly got me stumped.

look at the /proc/pci or lspci output and determine the resources used by the
device. if it is IO port based then it's ok the configure but if it's memory
based (you'll see a large number) then the only option is to check out the
2.4 series kernels, which have some support for these.
If it is a winmodem then you are stuffed, really. check www.linmodem.org

Okay. I am obviously wrong, and have demonstrated that
I have no idea what an equation is.
I am deranged for noticing how often I configure computer systems by
taking a set of installation disks and CDs over to a system, and
feeding them into the machine. I wasn't thinking clearly, so I called
this set of stuff X.
I am also deranged for thinking that this process results in
configuring something that I might think of as a program store on some
computer system (usually its hard drive). I think of this construction
as P.
And I am deranged for thinking that program store P (the hard drive)
defines the execution enviornment on a computer system. Most people
would call the results an operating system, or a set of applications,
or a server, or maybe even a client. In my deranged state, I called it
E.
Buried in the excesses of my deranged thinking, I wrote down something
that looks like this:
X --> P --> E
How amazingly deranged.

Hello
Is there any command out there, in addition to LPR, that I can make the
ink output of my printer increase?
I have a Lexmark 1100 and have managed to get the printer to work under
Mandrake 7.0...but the only problem is, no ink is coming out of the
cartridge. I have setup my printer using the latest driver for it and
using printtool.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just checked it out. You will have to upgrade to rpm 3.0.5. It is
available from redhat's webpage. With it, you will be able to read the
newer format.
Then you would be able to upgrade gcc.

Yes, writing to /dev/hda is the MBR. I can't comment on what W2k needs,
as I've never used it, and hopefully never will.

Thanks for the follow-up. Actually, I did what you suggested, and it
didn't solve the problem, BUT, for some reason switching to a clean
2.2.17 kernel (rather than 2.2.16) did the trick. I don't know why,
or what was causing the modules to be thrown off, but this seemed to
do the trick.
Thanks for the help,

It is? All I can find there are current versions (i.e. rpm-4.0.4).

Subject: Re: dual boot with Win2K (not 98 or NT) ??
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 01:02:30 GMT
You may have to do something drastic.
Will you be using only Win2K & Linux? Not Win98?
Create a DOS boot disk; be sure that it contains format.exe, fdisk.exe, and
the CD driver.
Boot using the floppy. Delete all partitions on your hard drive, using
fdisk.
Now, your hard drive has no partitions.
Pick a number for the size of your Win2K partition, e.g. 50%.
While in fdisk, choose to create a partition of size 32 MB; make this
partition the active partition.
Now, choose to create a partition of size 50%, or what ever size you want
for Win2K.
There's no need to format the partition for Win2K, however, you must format
the first partion, which is 32 MB; this will most likely have the drive
letter C:.
Now, install either Win2K or RedHat Linux; the order in which you install
them is immaterial.
Install Win2K as you would normally; you'll be given an option to format the
newly created partition during installation; Win2K done.
Install RedHat Linux 7.0; creating a RedHat Linux install-floppy makes
things easier, because you boot using the install-floppy and load from the
CD.
You must choose "custom install" option, when presented with choices like
GNOME, KDE, etc. Only if you choose "custom install", will you be presented
with LILO configuration. When you get to the point of LILO, choose to
install LILO, not in the MBR (master boot record), but in the boot
partition; this is *very* important, and may be one of the most important
steps in the dual boot setup.
Win2K installs the NT Loader in the MBR, which allows you to choose the boot
OS. You must add the Linux partition to the NT Loader menu.
There's a software called BootPart that will allow you to add the Linux
partition to the NT Loader menu.
Do a search in Yahoo for BootPart, and go to the website for information.

There's a high probablity that the PCI modem is at least related to
the winmodem family. Check both modems with list at the URL given
in another post.

ISA Pnp modems (that are not related to Winmodems) usually have a way
of turning off PnP and setting an IRQ and port with jumpers or a MSDOS
configuration program. That's the best way to go with such modems.
Check the modem manual or the manufacturer's web site for how to do
this for your modem. If you have a PCI/ISA bus then there also may
be IRQ settings in the BIOS that need changing.

I would think that "auto" should handle the bios setting for the hd. The
install
should have asked you where to install the lilo, which in this case your
choice
would have been the MBR. You should have been able to do all this
without ever
invoking win95. If you could type in: lilo = linux single /
you might
can find out through trouble shooting or linux /dev/hda1 it may boot
into
linux. I'm no expert but printing all the documentation that came with
my
installation and having trouble shooting sections to refer to has saved
me more
than once. I have installed linux on old stuff just for practice and
getting
video settings and old monitors configured correctly and/or trouble
shooting to
correct problems has paid off when I run into problems now.
Good luck
Most of the time, the answer is right in front of you
