William B:

I've seen this, ya just have to kinda work through it..

Typically one cycle of resizing will take care of the issue for a given
application:

Drag the window (usually to the left) so you can get at the maximize
button (the middle one-of-three in the upper right) and cycle it through
one or two resizes.

Then close the app and it should be OK the next time you run it.

Sometimes you need to actually drag the left, right, top and bottom
edges of the window frame within the boundaries of what you can see, and
then cycle the maximize button.

I have no idea *what's* going on with this, but Netscape is a prime
candidate.

I apologize for cross posting to the four newsgoups, but I am in a quandry
here. I have a netgear fa311 which the group so very kind enough to inform
me that netgear has provided "unsupported" linux drivers. Well for the last
few days I have been repeated trying to get this nic to operate with my
linux box...I am a fairly experienced linux user for the last 4-5 years, and
I have 4 other operating linux machines tweaked to perform specific tasks,
so I believe that ordinarilyI know what I am doing.

This machine is running rh7, and the hardware is AMD Athalon 700, ASUS K7V
MB, with 128 MB ram...This is the first "Workstation/Development station"
that I have put together, the other machines either serving as
firewall/router, web/ftp servers, smtp/pop3/usenet server or samba/nfs/print
server. I want to put this machine together as my alternate solution to
Windows workstation setups...It has a 20 GB HDD which I am dual booting
because my wife isn't interested at the moment in 100% migration. Everything
works just fine except networking.

I have downloaded the drivers from the netgear website, both the v7 and v6.2
for rh. I am concerned about the drivers for two reasons...The 6.2 drivers
are named in all-caps, this is a concern for obvious reasons, the rh7
version of the drivers though do not seem to operate properly...There are
two copies of the makefile, and when makefile is run, most of the command
return "command not found" and the compiler returns many many various errors
such as file not found and other sorts of things which I cannot list right
now because I am using the Win OS to write this. If I just go ahead and try
and configure networking after the fact, I get network unreachable when I
ping.

I would just go an purchase another NIC which I already have had success
with, but I can't quite afford to buy anything new right now.

Subject: Help needed- can't update glibc on RH7
Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2001 16:33:55 GMT

Have installed RH7 recently and finally got to updating glibc. Since
I'm on a P3 I grabbed glibc-2.2-12.i686.rpm. When I run rpm -Uvh
OR rpm -Fvh on it, I get this error:

error: failed dependencies:
  glibc-common = 2.2 is needed by glibc-2.2-12
  /usr/bin/getent is needed by stunnel-3.8-4

This surprised me because on Red Hat's site the only file listed as
needed for i686 was the one I grabbed. Anyway, I went back and got
glibc-common-2.2-12.i386.rpm and tried to install it. Running rpm -ivh
or rpm iUvh gives me:

error: failed dependencies:
  glibc < 2.2-12 conflicts with glibc-common-2.2.12.

It seems that this is telling me that in order to install
glibc-common-2.2-12 I would need to *uninstall* the older version of
glibc present. I was about to do this, but then realized that this is
something that could possibly hose me pretty badly. So, I decided to
seek advice from this forum before proceeding. If I uninstall glibc and
am not able to replace it nothing would run (including the kernel..?).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide me with clear instructions
on exactly how to go about this.

-Paul

My my, such mangling of the language I did there, the second 'this' is
obviously not needed.

My 'makeit' script still does that. Thats a line I can comment out

Dino:

What sort of 6.2 distro are you using?

Did you download it? Or buy it in a box?

From the RHL 6.2 "Installation Guide" to paraphrase:

"..if you do not want RHL to be installed on your master boot record do
not choose [either workstaton or server-class] installation..."

So the only way to get LILO set up the way you want seems to be with a
"custom" installation, otherwise RHL just goes ahead and does it the way
*it* wants...

Scot,

Here's how I got the drivers to work in my system, maybe it will work for
you too...

Download the Redhat 6.x drivers from the NetGear website.

Put all of the files in the same directory (doesnt matter which)

Compile the fa311.c file with the following command:

"
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O -m486 -c -I/usr/src/l
inux/include fa311.c "

That should compile into a new fa311.o file.

Move that file (fa311.o) into /lib/modules/2.x.xx-xx/net/

insmod fa311

It should work after you do this. You should do these steps as root. Let me
know how this works out...

I forgot to mention that if you have problems compiling it, try using 'kgcc'

Running RH 7 is bad enough news in itself. You need to change the
compiler to gcc 2.91.66 (or 2.8.1 or 2.7.2) to compile kernels.

Could you make yourself clear? What do you mean by "are named in"? Are
you talking about the filename on disk? The documentation? The tarfile?
Why should you care? (I don't!).

> version of the drivers though do not seem to operate properly...There are

What do you mean by "rhX version of ..". Drivers depend on a kernel,
not on a distribution! Which kernel is which driver aimed at, and
which kernel source are you using? Please be clear. It is likely that
your problem is some confusion in this area. Be aware that rh7 provides
fake kernel headers in /usr/include/{linux,asm} that you might do well
to get rid of, since they are for kernel 2.2.X (for X=14 or 15 or 17 -
I forget which).

> two copies of the makefile, and when makefile is run, most of the command

What do you mean? A file can only exist in one instantiation! Do you
mean that there are two Makefiles, in different places? So what?
You don't "run" a makefile, so I presume you mean "when I run make".

> return "command not found" and the compiler returns many many various errors

Then you won't get any help. You have to list them because we are not
mind readers. It sounds as though you have some missing files or
commands.

> and configure networking after the fact, I get network unreachable when I

Eh? What are you talking about?

> I would just go an purchase another NIC which I already have had success

Came down, put your head back on your shoulders, and post some data.
Use "script".

I am aware of the beta-ness of the current supplied compiler in rh7, been
there done that with the 2.4.2 kernel on another machine.

Yes the files are named in all-caps...i.e. FA311.O as opposed to
fa311.o...if this isn't an obvious problem, then I fear for you too.

I mean rh7 version because that is how the drivers are listed on the
website...I would suggest you keep your sarcasm in check until at least you

No, I mean there is a file called makefile and makefile.dat when I extract
the files from the archive I get makefile.dat and makefile(1).dat with
exactly the same contents. You presume too much.

I am talking about pretending the drivers install correctly regardless of

Thank you all (Glen, John, Juergen) for your helpful answers.

There are still a few loose ends left for me, which I retrieve from your
postings:

As for user 'nobody'

[From Glen Treviso's reply]
> In the case of httpd (Apache) you should only run
> the parent process as root and the children (the only processes
> actually accepting connections) as user 'nobody'.

[From Juergen Heinzl's posting]
> If it can be run and even started up as someone else, then do so. You

> possible etc.

I think this is for me the way to go.
On my system there already exists a user 'nobody' and a user 'daemon'. I
suspect that these accounts have been created for the purpose that you
indicate. Could I latch on to any of these accounts?

If not, I'll have to create an account with few priviliges myself. In
that case, I'd appreciate some direction as to a way how to ensure that
self created accounts have no login and shell facilities.

I hope you care to reply once more,

Thanks in advance,

Erik Leunissen (from someone else's e-mail account).
