I have a Athlon 700 on an Asus ka7, and redhat
doesn't seem to like it. 6.2 dies with a kernel
panic during boot, and 6.1 boots, buts occasionally
acts quirky - especially with X running. Has
anyone had any luck?
Suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

It is definitely in the errata for 6.2. That is where I got it.

By the way, you don't have to add the Linux partition to the NT Loader menu.
During the installation of RedHat Linux 7.0, you'll be presented with an
option to create a boot-disk (floppy). The boot-disk will allow you to
launch Linux. This is how it works. If the Linux boot-disk is in the
floppy drive when you power on or restart the computer, Linux will be
launched automatically; you will not be presente with an option to choose an
alternate OS. If you want to run Win2K, simply remove the floppy and power
on or restart the computer.

Subject: kmod and RH 6.2
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 01:21:02 GMT
I can't find kmod (or kerneld) in /etc/rc.d/init.d after upgrading from RH
5.2 to 6.2. Is that supposed to be OK? (the official RH reference guide
mentions kmod as one of background processes that are supposed to be there -
see "The Boot PRocess, Init, and Shutdown" chapter).
I am having problems automatically loading the ppa module on system boot and
I suspect the fact that I can't find kmod there has something to do with
it... Am I right or have I completely misunderstood the idea of kmod?
TIA,
Swengtoo.

That is not deranged, but so simplistic as to be too laughably obvious and
useless to anyone who has ever configured a computer. You take some software
X, put it into store P and you have configuration E. Hmm, I think that's not
clear enough, so let's draw a box and arrow diagram! Got any chalk?
I think the deranged part was comparing your installation to having sex.
You need to stop diddling your computer and start taking your medication. :)

Subject: mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues. (Raid
problem rh6.1 2.2.14 kernel) HP-LXr8500
Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 22:47:47 -0400
I have a MegaRaid controller (NetRaid) in a HP-LXr8500 server,
I just installed Linux rh6.1 running 2.2.14 kernel,
so I am trying to configure a Raid 0 using raid tools v0.90,
but I am having some problems;
According to
http://sunsite.utk.edu/ftp/pub/linux/slackware/slackware/docs/Linux-HOWTO/HP
-HOWTO there is an info that says:
For the RedHat 6.1 distribution, the MegaRaid driver provided
By the kernel does support only the first logical drive. In order
to obtain the others, please recompile a 2.2.14 standard kernel.
If you want to obtain that info, search at the document for "-DHP", the next
paragraph will be the info.
First:
I tried with a new kernel version like 2.2.15 or 2.2.16, but when I try to
boot with both of the new kernels the system hang. I tried with the rh6.2
CD and I got the same error.
This is the mesg that appear at the screen monitor:
===================================================================
blah ......
blah blah......
blah blah blah.......
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.16
entry at 0xfdaca
PCI: Using configuration type 1
PCI: probing pci hardware
PCI: 00:c0[0e11/6010] Scanning per hosts bridge
PCI: Scanning compaq per hosts bridge 18/00
PCI: 00:c8[0e11/6010] Scanning compaq per hosts bridge
PCI: Scanning compaq per hosts bridge 19/00
PCI: 00:d0[0e11/6010] Scanning compaq per hosts bridge
PCI: Scanning compaq per hosts bridge 1a/00
After this the system HANGS.
===================================================================
Basically in this case, I think that the problem is when rh6.2 is probing
the PCI buses, its hang probing the third PCI bus SCSI at the NetRaid
controller.
I could boot with rh6.2 CD if I remove the NetRaid card from the server
HP-LXr8500, wherever, I thought that I was not doing that the info says
and I began doing that the doc says step by step..........
===================================================================
Ok........
I upgraded from 2.2.12 to 2.2.14 Kernel but I could not find a raid patch
for 2.2.14 Kernel,
the last recent patch that I got, was raidtools-19990824-0.90.tar.gz, so I
did not patch the kernel with this old patch kernel.
Anyway with 2.2.14 kernel, I can see all raid disks from my raid controller,
so I sliced all disk as a "Linux raid" type "fd",
also made the raids partitions, but when I tried to use the raid tools, I
could not be able to define a raid 0,
I really think that I defined the /etc/raidtab file correctly and my
/proc/mdstat looks like is good.

I just looked at /var/log/dmesg and dmesg command and there is not problem
with this.
I just upgraded the Server BIOS to last version from any HW problem.

Any help please?
Is there a new raid patch for 2.2.(14,15,16,17) kernel ?

No problems with an MSI K7Pro board. Try turning off the power
management in the BIOS.

Yes, it is possible, at least in theory. Note that I have never done
this on DSL, only with T1's. I do not know if your providers are even
equipped to do BGP4 on their DSL lines.
You'll have to get an ASN for yourself, and you'll have to talk both
providers into exchanging routes with you. That last isn't very likely
to happen unless you are paying business rates, what with the damage
you can do to them if you screw up and they don't have bulletproof
route filtering.
Not sure how much memory a full bgp table will take on Linux (never
tried to do BGP4 on Linux but I think gated supports it), last I
checked Cisco recommended 64+ MB of RAM for two full views of the
Internet. OTOH, if you're only worried about inbound and redundancy,
and aren't too worried about asymmetric routing, you can simply
advertise your routes and not take tables from your upstreams.
One gotcha is that if you get IP's from one provider, they will
probably be aggregating routes, while the other one won't. So your
primary ISP will be advertising a "bigger" net than the other one,
which means most inbound traffic will go to the other one ("most
specific route wins" rule). There's a couple of ways to solve that
one.
Basically, you're going to have to work closely with both providers.
BGP4 isn't something you can just set up without telling them.

The warranty and liability expired as you read this message.
If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces.
Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it.
Do a, man command_here or cat command_here, before using it.

Hi
I just got a new server with an Intel CA810EAL motherboard. The
machine seems great so far but I am having trouble getting my X
configuration figured out for the on-board video adapter.
I am installing RedHat 6.2 and Xconfigurator makes it's suggestions,
which I take, but when I try to start X I get the msg "/dev/agp..." not
found.
Can anyone tell me a compatible card, etc. setting to use? The machine
will be a server and usually headless so I don't care if the display is
high-color and pretty, I just need 800x600x256 or better.

My system has an 810. If yours is set up like mine then you need
to have/compile the kernel module agpart.o. The device in
XF86Config is:
===
...
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel 810"
VendorName "Intel"
BoardName "810"
# 5-11-00 try adding power saving option
Option "power_saver"
VideoRam 4096
EndSection
...
===
The 3.3.x server is XF86_SVGA
Feel free to contact me by e-mail if this is insufficient.
