Andrew,

I had a somewhat similar problem. Try the following diagnostic checks:

ifconfig to verify your eth0 setup
route -e or -n to verify routing
review your communication setup files

Now, most likely everything above will be okay. So,
setup to telnet into your linux box. Just before you telnet in start the
tcpdump facility. Then do a telnet session and watch what is going on. This
little facility can show who's at fault. When I had the dump I was able to
show the cable modem folks the problem and they, when they saw it with their
own eyes, immediatly gave me a fix. Knowledge is power.

I have Linux 6.2 setup on my hda drive and have a Windows 98 disk that I
would like to hook up to my configuration. My question is where in my LiLo
configuration do I specify the correct settings for the hdb? Also, what
should the configuration settings be? Basically where do I point LiLo to
configure a dual boot machine.

Thanks,

Dave

Looks alike here (I run SuSE 6.4 on a COMPAQ Armada 1750 )
Here's my workaround [root] command that enabled eth0 on the Xircom:
ifconfig eth0 promisc

You mention hang-up after reboot. Sounds familiar again.
As a rule, I have learned NOT to reboot without power shut down.
Don't ask me why, but it solved a lot of trouble.

Good luck.

Rpms compiled for RH6.2 should only work with RH7.0 if
you installed the compat-rpms.

So configure linuxconf to allow web based access. BTW, I just
telneted from 1 box to anotha, su'ed to root and ran linuxconf
just fine.

Go to the RH support page and grab the reference guide. This
should help out alot.

Which ftp packages did you install. I have ncftp on 1 machine
and ftp'd to anotha and could get in as a user on that machine.
Check you /etc/xinetd.d/ directory for the wu-ftpd file.

Cause 8.11.1 was there latest. You did backup before
upgrading so you can copy the sendmail.cf from RH6.2
to /etc/mail and restart sendmail.

>etc/inetd.conf renamed to /etc/inetd.conf~
Inetd went out the door. Xinetd took it's place.

Make sure you read the reference manual this has many
other goodies for you.

Also, read the release notes. This lays out the major changes, like
xinetd. Also, note that ftp and httpd homes are now /var/www and
/var/ftp. Not sure how an upgrade handles this, but a new install should
be putting stuff here.

If it is a winmodem, throw it out. It is not worth the time and effort

I think you're stuck with only one POP server. In my Netscape, when
I try to "Add..." another server, I get a message that says I can only
do that with IMAP servers. (This may have something to do with
Netscape's attitude toward profiles. You can have multiple user
profiles with the Mac ind Windows versions, but Netscape seems to take
the attitude that it isn't necessary for Unix, since different users
have separate logins.)

You may be able to solve the news server login problem, however. In
Preferences (Edit menu), choose Newsgroups Servers. Select the server,
then press the "Edit ..." button. You should be given a choice between
having Netscape always ask for your user name and password, and only
asking when necessary.

I hope this helps.

hi all,

I have a small prob with my nfs setup. I have a solaris machine( along
with other unices) that mounts a directory via nfs. The problem is that
i cant get the nfs mounted partition to be read/write, it is always read
only. In the /etc/exports directory i hav the line

/home/aletur * (rw)

(its a home directory). So any machine can mount it read/write yes ?

ithen restart mountd and nfsd with

rcnfsserver restart

( its on suse ), and no complaints. To mount the directory on solaris i
use

mount -F nfs nfs://<ipaddr>/home/aletrue /export/home/dave_f

The problem is mainly that i dont know which end the problem has
originated from, the client or server ? I have followed all of the
instructions in the docs but my head is now jurting - any help is much
apreciated.

I have the same graphics chip, and I had troubles, too. My card has 8
MB of video RAM, and that's the clue:

Somewhere in docs or HOWTOs I found that it's necessary to configure X

works.

IBM is not the only manufacturer that delivers a recovery CD that does
a complete drive format and repartition. I have seen the same on all
of the HP laptops I have used, the Sony VAIO, Dell and Toshiba models.
If you check this even includes the desktops that have the same
recovery option. I note that there was a comment about the DVD unit
and WinNT, I do not remember NT being able to access a DVD even on a
desktop. Another point is the statement that the manufacturer will
void the warrnaty if you reformat and repartition the drive. I was
working for a company and ALL of our systems immediately were
reformated and repartitioned. There was never a question of warranty
on any of them. That would be like saying you could not change Win9x
to NT or Win2K because they did not install it. It sounds like they
are trying to scare you off from doing what you want. I admit they
might give you hassles if you call tech support for an issue and it is
on an OS they did not install. I plan on checking some of the comments
for my own projects. I generally do not use a vendor that is
unresponsive to the needs of the customer, remember "the customer is
always right". There are too many choices that will provide what we
want. I have an IBM laptop with a dual Win98 and RH 6.2 setup at work
and an HP laptop at home setup the same. I do not feel that just
because a system comes that way it must stay that way.

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Redhat 7 intel and found that most of the
man pages and the info pages disappeared from my system.

Which RPMs should I install to recover them?
I have man-pages-1.30-4 installed, but it has very few man pages
(only about 80 in section 1).
For example, I used to use 'man sprintf' all the time, but
now it's gone. What package is it in?

Thanks,
