Subject: HELP ME!: How can I enable ALSA MIDI synth sound? (for SB AWE64 & GUS
Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 03:29:32 +0100
I am student of software-techniques and for my thesis I plan to develop a=
sing- and gesture controlled music synthesizer with a 3D/VR user interfac=
e.
Because I need for this project USB webcam support and full-duplex sound =
processing(simultaneous input and output) I was urged to download Kernel =
2.4.1 and the ALSA sound drivers.
I have a PC with 128MB RAM and an AMD K6 300MHZ CPU running Debian linux =
with
Kernel 2.4.1 and installed ALSA 5.10.After trying various ALSA versions I=
got
most sound functions to work, but neither the internal MIDI synth of my So=
und-
Blaster AWE64 Value nor of my Gravis Ultrasound Classic run despite they =
are
claimed to be supported by the ALSA driver. No matter what I change in =
"/etc/modules" or "/etc/modutils/alsa",I always get in "/proc/asound/snds=
tat"
the message: "Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG" and MIDI programs lik=
e
playmidi complain "No playback device set".
I already tried multiple ALSA versions (including 0.9beta) with no succes=
s.
I read the alsa source code docs and also the documentation package =
"doc2001112.tar.zip" without finding any explanations how to enable synth=
devices in config.(May the "snd-card-virmidi" driver be neccessary for th=
is??
Which parameters does it need?)
The setup program "alsaconf" didn't work anyway;version 4.2 enumerates fr=
om
1 instead of 0 which is incompatible with alsa, and version 4.3b writes no=
=
output at all (to /etc/modutils/alsa) as long /etc/modules.conf exists,an=
d
when I delete modules.conf then it writes but forgets to insert the name =
of
one of the soundcards which results in a faulty output file.Though hand-
editing /etc/modutils/alsa is the only reasonable way to get a working
/etc/modutils/alsa file.With ALSA 0.9=DF alsaconf anyway doesn't work due=
to
0.9=DF uses no "dma_size" parameters anymore.
Please help me and tell me what is wrong with my installation or whether =
I
need an older or patched ALSA version compatible with Kernel 2.4.1 to get=
the
MIDI synth to work.I urgently need to get soon the system running because=
I
am living on borrowed time with completing the project. =

Subject: Newbie: Question on X server setup
Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 10:56:26 +0800
Hi! I am a newbie to Linux and would just like to ask the group on some
questions. I have just installed Red Hat Linux 6.0 on an HP VL400 machine,
using Matrox G450 video adapter, HP p700 17 in monitor, an HP CD-writer
9100b and a HP deskjet 930c:
1. Where can I get list of Linux commands?
2. Everytime I try to start an X-window (Gnome ?), using startx command, the
window does not fit on my screen and looks very big so I only see a quarter
of the X window. I tried re-installing Linux, but since my monitor and video
adapters are not on the list that is included in the installation, I usually
use custom choices. This does not seem to work though. How do I re-configure
my system to be able to use the X window?
Thanks and regards,
Roose

This worked. Thanks. I suppose it's apparant why it works, too- RPM is
smart enough to see that updating glibc eradicates the dependency
problem with glib-common. What's a little disconcerting, though, is
that Redhat's site doesn't even give you instructions that will actually
work.

Originally I did that. Now whenever I type "java", regardless of the
arguments I pass, linux thinks I'm launching the executable. I'm guessing
that when I typed "install j2jdk1.3-rpm.bin /usr/lib/java" that I caused
linux to associate that path with the executable.
Anyway I can undo that?

Subject: How To Remove Linux?
Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 11:45:50 +0800
I have both Windows 98SE and RedHat Linux 6.1 in my system. Now, I want to
remove Linux and leave only Windows in my system. In other word, I want my
system returns to the state before I installed Linux. A friend of mine told
me to use Windows version of FDISK by typing the following at DOS prompt:
FDISK/MBR
As I know, one system has only one MBR. So, if I delete the MBR, can I get
my PC to boot into Windows?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank You.

Subject: Missing bzImage
Date: Tue, 06 Mar 2001 04:18:50 GMT
I have been trying to get my NetworkEverywhere NIC (NC100) to work in linux
(Mandrake 7.2).
Linksys says to use the tulip driver. I couldn't get the card recognized. So
somethings I read said that the ethernet card was better off in the kernel
and not as a module. So I changed to yes in the kernel and proceeded to make
a new one. Steps I took:
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make clean
cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old
locate bzImage
That is where it stops. I can't find bzImage anywhere, vmlinuz.old is there
though. I have tried RedHat 7.0 and this Mandrake 7.2
I don't know what I am doing wrong. Searched the entire harddrive and can't
find bzImage anywhere.
I had no problem compiling the ltmodem 5.78 into a module and getting online
with kppp. This version of linux kernel has the tulip driver already in it.
Heck, if I could get the darn thing to see the ethernet card as eth0 as I
have tried I wouldn't really worry about this, but still, I may need to
compile the kernel later and cannot seem to get this accomplished.
Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks

X,
Do you have a file named "as" on your path ? This file is
needed to create the compiled object. On my Redhat 6.0
machine, this file is part of the package binutils. You need
to find this tool put it on your path, or install it, to
compile.

Edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and comment out all lines which start
with Virtual.(by inserting a # at the beginning of that line)
That will disable the feature of virtual desktops which are larger then
the actual physical display.

3DFX Voodoo 3000 PCI with 16Mb (3dfx Interactive, Inc.) Red

worked, although it gave a GPF (you use a different name) every time I

so while it is at the menders, I am using an old Samsung Syncmaster 3.
I realized I would have to redo my XF86Config, but nothing I try under
xf86config, Xconfigurator, or xcfg(cant remember exact name) works. It
always says "no valid screen modes" or something along these lines. The
values for video card and monitor come from the programs database,
except for in xf86config, where I have to enter it manually.

I read that a year ago, but I suppose I can read it again. I
set up my modem, set up my dialer, set up my DNS, as you can see from
my other post, I get ppp, but cannot connect any program to the

It is possible that my provider gave me an invalid DNS server

there any public DNS servers I can try ?

All the config programs just say "no possible screen modes",
or something in that line. I'm using the "no possible screen modes"

Subject: can't mount samba drives!?
Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2001 22:53:52 -0600
Hi,
I've recently installed Suse Linux 7.0 (2.2.16) on a Toshiba laptop and have
integrated it into an ethernet home network with two Win 98 computers. I'm
running Samba 2.0.7. I can use the Win98 machines to browse the shares on
the Linux server no problem. But I can't seem to browse the Win98 shares in
the same way. When I use kruiser file manager from KDE (v1) desktop, I can
see the network neighborhood and expand it to see the other computers and
their shares, but I cannot open the shares ... the message I get is "unable
to mount ...." I can use the smbclient command line and get onto the
shares. I've gone thru the troubleshooting procedure Andrew Tridgell posted
and all is well.
I must be doing something wrong regarding the mounting of shares. Do I need
mount points explicitly specified somewhere (like in /dev)?
Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to see files graphically
in KDE on the Win 99 shares and open them directly.
Thanks,
shaughn b

I don't know about ALSA or the Gravis, but it should be no problem
getting the AWE64 to work. You need to double check your interrupts and
dma settings. Login as root and run sndconfig and reboot. If you can
use the KDE or gnome midi players, then you might try installing ALSA.
