Then you have a problem. I would try reinstalling the
xinetd package. If this does not work, then try their
support line.

Subject: Strange printing problem
Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000 20:52:45 +0200

I have changed from Suse 6.3 to Debian a few weeks ago, but I was not
able to get my printer to work.

I have a Canon BJC-2000 (on LPT1) . Under Suse (Kernel 2.2.13, printing
and parport support compiled as modules) the printer works fine.

Now I can't even do a
cat samplefile.txt > /dev/lp0
nothing happens

I get NO errormessage like "device not configured". I get this
errormessage when I want to access lp1,lp2, but this is clear because I
have only one printer port.
The device file exist:

crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 0 Jul 5 19:44 /dev/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 1 Jul 5 19:44 /dev/lp1
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 6, 2 Jul 5 19:44 /dev/lp2

When I send strings to lp0 the printer does nothing (this worked under
Suse).
I have loaded the modules correctly:

parport_pc 7560 1 (autoclean)
lp 5476 0 (autoclean)
parport 7456 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp]

/var/log/messages tell me that they are loaded correctly to, too:

Oct 4 18:25:10 Meditation kernel: parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7
[SPP,PS2]
Oct 4 18:25:10 Meditation kernel: lp0: using parport0
(interrupt-driven).
What does PS2 at the end of the log mean, is there a conflict with my
PS2 mouse?
But my PS2 port is on IRQ 12.

I have tried with interupts and without ,and with SPP or EPP enabled in
the BIOS.
I although tried different IO-Ports in the Bios: 0x378, 0x3bc.
But nothing happens.

This is really strange.
I there a big difference in the handling of the parport between
2.2.13(Suse) and 2.2.17(Debian)?

Hope someone con help me

Nope. Install ncftp for ftp client and proftpd or
wu-ftpd for server.

You are gonna have to read the readme, install and
man pages for that. If you go with openssh, you will need
the openssh-2.x,openssh-server-2.x,openssh-clients-2.x and
openssh-askpass-2.x rpms. The configurtion part of the
INSTALL file is very helpful. When installing, if you
choose the select individual packages, you get to see
all the packages. Dependencies are also handled by this
option.

In suse6.2 I seem to remember that there was a glitch with
wvdial and the serial lines. There is something about it under
wvdial in the suse database.

Basically, any user using a modem must be a member of
group dialout and group uucp. uucp gives access to the serial
lines, and dialout gives access to the modem.

This may be your problem. The pppd can't get a serial line to
get to the modem.

Instead of recompiling, try adding 'alias eth0 tulip' to
/etc/modules.conf and rebooting. If this does not work,
install the kgcc rpm and change the /path/to/linux/Makefile
to use kgcc. Change the CC line.

Subject: Linux Stopped Booting!
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Victor S. Miller)
Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000 19:56:42 GMT

I installed Caldera Linux eDesktop 2.4 on my Dell M166s (Pentium 166
MMX, 32 MB memory, 10GB hard disked partitioned with Partition magic)
about 1 week ago. It was pretty much working ok (though I still
couldn't configure my ethernet card -- you'll see that that's a
secondary problem). I have a dual boot system using Boot Magic. All
of a sudden last night when I tried to boot Linux, I got to

Loading Kernel

and then it hung up on

Booting Kernel (all disk activity stopped -- after 5 minutes -- which
is MUCH longer than it usually took -- I power cycled). It kept doing
the same thing. Since I hadn't really done much on the Linux yet (and
I was getting desparate), I deleted the linux partition, reinstalled a
new partition, and tried to reinstall the system -- now the
installation hangs up in exactly the same place! Are there any
suggestions as to how to get to the bottom of this problem?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I've been attempting to install various linuxes and so far, so bad.

Pretty much every time I do, at some point during the installation I get
segmentation faults that appear to be cased by the memory paging system
point at non-existent virtual addresses or something along those line.

I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. I actually got Debian 2.2 *partially*
installed, but when I try to use dselect to put the rest on it will fall
over in the manner above.

The only thing I can think of is needing to append="mem=265M" in the LILO
config... but that seems ridiculous, as it's not like the kernel thinks I
have *more* memory than I do surely. Also, since it crashes *during* the
install sometimes, I'm guessing that fiddling with LILO isn't going to
solve the problem.

Please help if you can... even some idea of what's going wrong would be
useful.

Cheers,

PJ

Hi there,
I created a PPP file using netcnf for an external ISDN modem connected to

If I remove it and connect an external 56k modem, Linux (Mandrake7.0)
doesn't see the difference and keeps on working.
Should be Linux told that the two devices are different? Is the protocol for
ISDN the same for an analog modem?
What about the flowcontrol, should be checked off for ISDN?
In other words, what's the difference between the two as far Linux is
concerned?
Thank you.

I'm installing (repeatedly!) RH6.0 on a plain-looking box:

- Gigabyte GA-586AT motherboard (no documentation available ANYWHERE)
- Pentium MMX 200MHz processor
- 32MB of RAM
- 425MB drive (1021 cyl, 16 heads, 51 sectors/track)
- Trident VGA 1MB
- 3Com 3C509 NIC (IRQ 10, I/O port 0x300)

This box will run Win98 and FreeBSD (it had the former, I tried the latter).
When I install RH6.0 (or SuSE 6.1), it won't boot. All I get is:

LILO boot:
Loading linux

There should be a bunch of dots after the word 'linux', but none show. The
machine has to be powered off and on.

I found a reference that explains what it means if you just get 'L' or 'LI'
or 'LIL'. However, at the point shown above, is LILO still running? Should I
look at that somehow? Should I examine the kernel somehow?

Ideas, pointers, even an 'RTFM' would be appreciated!
