If your machine only has 4MB of ram, your choice of distributions are
limited. I know Debian would work. You can forget about RedHat or
Mandrake. They need more ram.

Adaptec 1505 - 1522 do not have onboard BIOS. It would not be
auto-detected. Depending on your distribution, some need you to pass
a parameter at boot time. Some don't. With Debian, you need to pass
the parameter of "aha152x=IOaddr,IRQ,SCSIid" such as "aha152x=0x340,11,7"
with my 1505 card.

If you can I would start from scratch. A freshly formated hard drive is
much easier to work w/. Also, the first chance you get to check your drive
for errors, do it. Bad sectors blow.

go to the kdeStart button down in the lower left corner (if your bar is

goto look n feel -> fonts

I usually suggest Mandrake for first-timers.... granted, I'm biased, but
it does come with the easiest installation program as well as many

My A7V133 runs very stable with Linux 2.2.18 and ide patches from
linux-ide.org. 3 IBM 703045, two @promise, one @via, all three deliver 36
MB/s and are able to run bonnie as long as I want.

Maybe you should try that kernel with that patches...

Hi all,

I've got RH7.0 loaded and have a domain registered and am providing a name
server for that domain. That all seems to work (I think...)

My problem is that I cannot resolve my actualy domain name, here is an example:

lets say my registered domain is "kamb.com"

Within that domain name server (ns.kamb.com), I have a few other machines that
can be resolved (i.e. ftp.kamb.com).

I can ping the "ftp.kamb.com" and it will resolve it, but I cannot seem to
resolve just the plain old vanilla "kamb.com". Does that make sense?

Is there anything special I need to do in my name.conf file? Here is a special
location where I tell it to resolve just the "kamb.com"???

Any pointers would be greatly appriciated!

Not always, you can have a very very busy BSD router with a really small
load average (almost no processes just lots and lots of kernel activity).

Now an impressive uptime was one posted a while ago for a 2.1-STABLE box
on a moderately busy site :)

Don't worry about the strict monitor definition - the key things are the sync
ranges below. If your monitor supports EDID, then sometimes the monitor will
give misleading information to the driver and things get a little cranky, but
generally it should work ...

No - the .0 shouldn't matter.

Okay - lets analyze this a little further. Look at the file
/var/log/XFree86.0.log after you start X in this 1280x1024x24bit@54Hz mode -
save it somewhere safe as I suspect you will quickly go insane looking at a
screen at 54Hz.

Look through it for lines like (the driver may be different):

(II) MGA(0): I2C bus "DDC" initialized.
  (II) MGA(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered.
  (II) MGA(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.
  (II) MGA(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" registered.
  (II) MGA(0): I2C device "DDC:ddc2" removed.
  (II) MGA(0): I2C Monitor info: 0x82872a8
  (II) MGA(0): Manufacturer: PHL Model: 4109 Serial#: 2565
  (II) MGA(0): Year: 1999 Week: 45
  (II) MGA(0): EDID Version: 1.1
(II) MGA(0): Analog Display Input, Input Voltage Level: 0.700/0.300 V
(II) MGA(0): Sync: Separate Composite SyncOnGreen
(II) MGA(0): Max H-Image Size [cm]: horiz.: 34 vert.: 25
  (II) MGA(0): Gamma: 2.76
and so on.

There should be a list of supported Vesa Modes - I suspect that 1280x1024@75Hz
should be listed. You should also get a pixel clock measurement and an image
size as well, among other details. Then it should tell you what refresh rates
it is going to use, and then it should 'delete' all unsuitable modes. What do
you get for all this, and how does it compare to the specs in the monitor
manual.

Cheers,
Toby Haynes

process of upgrading my Win95 partition to Win98, my boot sector and LILO
got overwritten. Now the PC boots straights into Win98. The Linux

I don't have a Linux boot disk (though I can probably get one if it will

The internet connections sharing tool that comes with W98SE is not the
best, so you need to download and install a proxy server onto your windows
box. I use "AnalogX" downloaded from www.tucows.com and it works great and
was VERY easy to install and configure. It looks like all of your settings
on you Linux box should work once you have your windows box proxying it.

There are some major differences between 5.2 and 7.0. Fewer than between
5.2 and 6.2. If I were you I'd stick to my guns and not upgrade until the
minor release comes out. Then there are those that like to be the first and
always install the latest. Everytime I vary from a regular routine I get
burned.

I wonder if it is really necessary to upgrade the distro as long as you
keep the packages updated? Personally, I buy the Red Hat Updates CD once
every 8 week and everything I have installed gets updated in a matter of
minutes. It's the easiest upgrade I have ever done.

If Win98 didn't canibalize more than your MBR, which it normaly doesn't, it
should be no problem.

Get a boot/rescue CD/disk,boot and mount your / to /mnt, asuming your
/etc/lilo.conf was OK:

lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf

Should be all you need to do

Good luck
