I just installed RedHat 7.0 and have set up my dial-in access using
rp3-config and using rp3 from a prompt works just fine. However, I want
to use the rp3 applet in my gnome panel, but when I add it, it crashes
the panel. Has anybody else experienced this? What could be the problem?

I understand the nettiquette of this - but I just got to this newsgroup,
intending to lurk a while, but was quite eager to see the answer to 1)

would be appreciated, even if they also appear elsewhere. (OTOH, a

I had loaded Peanut Linux with no problems, but could not get it to
recognize my network card, which worked with both SuSE and Corel.

Also, I couldn't get it to print, but I really didn't try very hard, since I
could get to network card to work.

It is very impressive to stuff so many programs and have it look so nice in
only 150MB of actual storage, but I just couldn't get the tulip driver to
work.

Oh well, I still have a 340MB hard drive looking for a home. . .(I want to
use Netscape and WordPerfect it all actually fit in Peanut Linux)

Any suggestions, other than buying another network card (but the other one
works)?

Subject: Making the Backspace key work using a remote X server
Date: Fri, 6 Oct 2000 09:43:38 +1100

I've just installed RedHat 7.0. The only niggle so far is the interaction
between the X server I use on Windows NT (eXcursion), xterm, and the
Backspace key.

Using ^H in an xterm does the expected thing of deleting the character to
the
left. However, Backspace just beeps. Using showkey(1), it appears that
Backspace is sending

 ^[[3~

to the terminal, so "stty erase" won't work.

How do I make xterm understand Backspace? There seem to be a myriad of
utilities that do things with key mappings, and I can't figure out which one
I should be looking at.

Note: Backspace works as expected when using a RedHat 6.x xterm.

Use expert install. Mandrake, wandering down the MS road, decides on the
simple install that you only want Linux. Expert allows you , not them,
to assign the partitions.

Redhat6.2 has teh old lilo I belive. 8GB limit on the location of the
partition containing /boot.

CTRL S is defined in the ascii code to be "XOFF" which stops

I have started using linux recently, I have messed up /etc/inittab . Now
Linux doesn't start. It is Redhat Linux 6.2. I have changed the line

#Run gettys in standard run levels
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1

to

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/vgetty modem

I was trying to run initialize vgetty.

Now linux box does not start at all and it is giving error at some point
while starting sshd2 and saying that "probably port 22 is already in use" .
It was working absolutely fine before. I have boot disk for that, if it
could be used. I think this is the problem, how can i change that file, for
this I have to get into the system which I can't .
I will appreciate if someone will reply soon.

OK....RTFM.

Well, I had this problem myself...in my case, which sounds completely
different than yours:
I use (I assume most people do) a symlink 'vmlinuz' in /boot to point to my
current vmlinuz file so I don't have to contantly edit lilo.conf.
I had installed a new kernel in /boot, moved the symlink vmlinuz to point
to that kernel (and System.map to point to it's system map) and forgot to
re-run lilo - when I booted my system it did exactly what you're describing
until I ran lilo to update the images with the new kernel.

That probably doesn't help you - although if you could get the system to
boot (boot disk?) you might try checking lilo.conf and running lilo.

If it helps, your motherboard manual should be here:

The GA-586ATX boards are near the end under "Motherboards All Except 486"

It is theer in /etc/inetd.conf. U might not be able to see it using ls, but
it is there. Open it in your favorite editor such as vi
Use commanf find / -name "file_name" to find any file next time..
Of course u have to disable those services in inetd.conf. Just putting
remark # sign infront of those lines. After that u will have to restart the
service by
/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart

Right, your case is different. This happens immediately after completing the
install. If I'd been fiddling with the kernel, I would immediately assume
that I'd screwed up. However, I haven't had the chance. It's kinda
frustrating, because I installed RH6.0 (the same CDs) on another box (AMD
K6-2 500MHz...) and it worked the first time.

I can't boot from the so-called 'boot' disk created during the install,
either. The install routine creates the disk without complaint, but it ain't
bootable afterward.

Looked there - first place I found - but no joy. The ...ATX board is a
different board, and mine is one of several that is not documented (or even
listed) on Gigabyte's site.
