Often this is an indication of faulty memory. Have that checked out.

Loadlin to the rescue. The linux partition data is still all there
unless ms fdisk touched it? Use lilo only on linux partitions not the
mbr in multi boot systems.

I am using http://phpwizard.net/projects/phpMyAdmin/ which works on a friends
MDK7.2 box and not my own code (yet)

Subject: CD Not recognised by kernel
Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 11:29:43 +1300

I'm in the process of trying to build up a linux system on my old 486,
and I'm doing it from scratch because the box only has a small hard disk
and most distros take it all up (seriously, the disk is only 170mb).
Anyway, after much heartache I have managed to get it to boot, run some
scripts, enter runlevel 2 and let me logon. Now this is all I can do at
this stage since any software I care to install is on my cd (library of
rpms). Which would normally be fine but when I do this:

[root ~]# mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

I get this:

Kernel does not recognise /dev/hdc as a block device.

Since this is an old box, the cdrom is plugged into the sound card. I
have compiled the kernel with sound support and made sure cdrom support
is in too. In the block devices section of xconfig I can't find any
options that seem to be an obvious fix.

Does anyone have a solution to my problem? This machine is standalone,
networking is simply not an option. If you can help, please do.

Thanks
David

Oops, I pressed the wrong button.

You will probably have to point to where lilo is: e.g.,

/mnt/sbin/lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf

Why not use lilo for mbr in multi-boot systems? I don't personally do that but
is there some reason why not?

If you are trying to boot off hda1 then the BIOS won't recognise it
unless you have a newer BIOS and a loader which supports it, since the
old way of doing things (WINNT still does it this way, Win98+ does it
the new way, don't know about win95) meant the boot partition could be
8.2Gb max (the maths of which I won't go int). But basically this means
you need a smaller boot partition. Normally, a big linux box will have
a small boot partition and then have a larger partition mounted on /usr
(eg you might have a 540mb boot disk, and then mount your shiny new 60gb
disk on /usr)

Hope this helps

Thanks again Herman.

One more question. If I want to use IMAP, I assume I need to activate
the demon in inetd, but do I disable the pop one again or just leave
both running?

Without being picky, asuming you use the rescue CD/disk that belongs to your
distro, you
should have the right lilo version on this rescue system, which will be in your
PATH.

If the OP had updated his lilo, he wouldn't have asked this question...

To me it sounds like you haven't even got the daemon installed. These days
with the rpm distributions when the pop server is installed it should make a
corresponding entry in the /etc/xinetd.d directory structure.

Have a shot at downloading the pop daemon again and re-installing/installing
it on your system. This should create the file needed as well as starting the
daemon up for you.

See ya

I have a successful internet connection set up and I wanted to enable users (I am the
only user
on my box) to be able to dial in rather than reverting to root all the time. I
succeeded in allowing
the user to dial the isp but when the connection is made I cant browse. Does this have
anything to
with perhaps a kernel firewall or some default gateway that may be set up on my
system? Because
when i dial in as root i can browse as a normal user.

FreeBSD usually installs booteasy by as an installation option, as you go
through the disklabel/partitioning sequence.

It is also available in the FTP sites for FreeBSD or OpenBSD (I forget the
exact path, but it is something like .<root folders>/tools/booteasy or
something similar.
