Ok. well i know every die hard linux user hates X and X questions. But i
like XWindows and the easy navigation. ok, i am lazy. I downloaded a ssh
client that i know to be xwindows client. i followed the instructions on how
to install it.. ie .. ./configure .make .make install .. etc. Installed
ifne.. but like many of my other perevious adventures with trying to install
stuff. i cant figure out how to run it in xwindows.. I looked tru the
directory and if i tyoe the command from konsole, it runs in console. I dont
want this, i want to be lazy and point and click.
Please tell me what i am missing.

Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2000 02:30:07 -0000
I followed the instructions, downladed the ISO files, made the 2 CD's and
the installation went smoothly through the first CD. However when it
tells me to put in the second CD in and press OK, I run into trouble...
first of all the CD drawer won't open..... no probem, I just use the
paperclip to open it up. I put the second CD in and he laptop won't read
it. I click OK.. no luck. The CD spools up, but the little CD LCD
indicator won't indicate the CD activity.
If there were a xterm/command prompt somewhere I could get to, I think I
would be in business, but in GUI land there I can't find any untried
options.
(gateway 2500 or so, fixed CD and floppy, pII233, 32MB)
anyone have similar difficulties or ideas?
thanks.

Dear Fayaz,
You haven't mentioned what recovery steps you've tried
so I'll throw out the standard ones...
When booting and you get the lilo: prompt, type "linux single"
to boot into single-user mode.
I'm not sure this will help if you've told inittab to replace
mgetty with vgetty.
I would hope the vgetty folks would have
some recovery suggestions for when installations go awry as
I'm sure happens to many new vgetty installations.

Dear Victor, what happens if you type "linux single" at the lilo:
prompt?
This is a way to boot into single user mode where it doesn't try to load
device drivers or run server tasks.
(I don't know caldera's install, so there may not be a lilo: prompt)

Stephen, xrage.rpm can be found at
ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/suse_update/X/XFCom/xrage/xrage.rpm
and if you use XF86Setup for the configuration you'll also need
the xfsetup.rpm file from the same directory.
You might find the instructions at

them for my Rage Fury and everything works great (I have SuSE 6.2) .

Orbit is a CORBA ORB (Object Request Broker).
Wow, that explains a lot!
Corba is a means for processes to communicate with
eachother. It allows lots of different languages to
talk to gnome and make it do its stuff without having
gnome-specific code built into these languages.
or something like that.

I have installed many RedHat machines from iso without burning the cd.
The trick is to mount the iso on an ftp server and do a network
install.

At the lilo prompt, do a
linux init=/bin/bash
and it will throw you into a bash shell. From there you are on your own.

But 7.0 wipes this file, and switches to xinetd. Config is now in

You really have to be careful when asking for this kind of information.
Many of the replies you get are garbage. If you're looking for QUALITY,
go with 3COM. I'd recommend the 3C905B. I use them exclusively on both
Windows and Linux boxes, have used hundreds of them. They work
flawlessly, and are faster than anything else on the market.
Furthermore, they are guaranteed for LIFE--no questions asked. If one
fails, send it back and they'll send you another one. I've only had one
fail out of over 200 cards over a period of 3 years.
Also, for the idiot that said they don't provide drivers for Linux:
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c905b.htm
Not sure why anyone would need them, as the Linux kernel supports most
3COM NICs including the 3C905B.

Now why would anybody spend $70 on a 3C905C-TX-M 3Com adapter when superior
performance can be had for $20 Linksys LNE100TX?
You can buy 3 Linksys and still have enough money for a few beers after work
for the price of a single 3COM of equal capability.
The 3COM DO NOT outperform the Linksys in Linux (or Windows AFAIK)!
I have never had a Linksys fail but then I haven't installed 100s of them.
The Linksys also features a lifetime warranty but quite frankly that is of
limited value as the true expense will be the cost of replacing the NIC and
the downtime associated with any such event.
I stand by my statement that 3COM are overpriced and under supported.
Just one guy's opinion.

Hi Rod !
Is Red Hat really so problematic and dangerous (for other OS) to install
? I never installed it but I already repared partition tables for other
people who lost access to their HD after a bad attempt to install Red
Hat.
Before installing Linux (and many other OS too but not all * ), I simply
create whatever logical and/or primary partitions I need, either with
Partion magic or more or less manually (I know you don't like low level
editing.) The partitions don't need to be formated but only to have the
correct filesystem ID. Than they will be recognized by the install
setup, which will ask if you want to use them. It works well with Linux
(SuSE distribution), SCO, Solaris, Free BSD and Net BSD. That way the
installation doesn't create or delete partitions nor modify the
partition table, it just install the operating system and that's finally
the goal.
Red Hat seems to be a kind of second 'other OS killer', like Windows.
* Some other OS (QNX, Plan9) will only install in 'unpartitionated
space'.

/etc/aliases is for mail aliases, to direct mail for one user to another.
See 'man procmail' and related man pages. You need to set up a .forward
file in that user's home dir to run procmail, and configure .procmailrc to
tell procmail what to do with incoming mail for that user.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[View this message in a fixed-width/monospace font like Courier for best

Hello,
I am trying to get the color output from my inkjet printer (an Epson Stylus
COLOR 600) to match as closely as possible the images I view on my screen under
Linux. I am looking for advice on whether to increase or decrease the amount
of Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and/or Black ink used by my printer.
For Linux people, I am using the following:
SuSE Linux 6.4
GhostScript 5.5
Uniprint Driver for Stylus COLOR 600
(stc600p.upp - 720dpi x 720dpi Plain Paper)
Also for Linux people, here are the colorspace entries from my stc600p.upp
file:
-dupBlackTransfer="{ 0.0000 0.0329 0.0706 0.1160 0.2392 0.7955 }"
-dupCyanTransfer="{ 0.0000 0.0602 0.1133 0.1961 0.2945 0.3885 }"
-dupMagentaTransfer="{ 0.0000 0.0602 0.1113 0.1617 0.1987 0.2328 }"
-dupYellowTransfer="{ 0.0000 0.0350 0.0914 0.1567 0.2430 0.2934 }"
For Engineering/Physics/Colorspace people:
The table above indicates the relative amount of ink that should be deposited
on the page for a given pixel, for each color in the CYMK colorspace.
As far as I understand, the driver handles 32 levels of saturation (5-bits,
binary) for each color represented in the table. Highest-order bit is the
column to the far right; lowest-order bit is the second column from the left.
The "zero" column has a function that I personally have not determined... (If
anyone would like to correct me or elaborate, please do - I am very much still
a novice at this.)
Below are links to two sets of pictures. Each set contains the following:
A.) A digital photograph (the "control" image).
B.) A scan of the photograph as printed from my Stylus COLOR 600.
I have attempted to make the scans (of the printed images) match the printed
images as closely as possible, without adjusting the brightness, contrast, or
colorspace of my computer monitor. This is so people can make accurate
analyses and recommendations.
Set #1:
1A.) Source Photograph (Control Image):
http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/processor-on-board.jpg
1B.) Printed Photograph (Scanned Image):
http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/processor-on-board-print.jpg
Set #2:
2A.) Source Photograph (Control Image):
http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/parts-layout.jpg
2B.) Printed Photograph (Scanned Image):
http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/parts-layout-print.jpg
I realize that by using a 5-bit CYMK color driver, and printing on plain,
uncoated, white inkjet paper, I am going to lose some ability to accurately
represent the image I am attempting to print - especially things like lens
flare, sparkle, metallic luster, etc....
But I would at least like the overall color (or more appropriately, hue and
saturation) to be accurately rendered.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in Advance...
Best Regards,
Kevin Adams
