Looks like it's trying to turn off the notorious Pentium III serial number
"feature", but failing because the Athlon doesn't have such a number.

If you're running Red Hat 6.something, see Alan Cox's linux-kernel message
at http://www.uwsg.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0009.0/0701.html .

For periodical update the database, I'd make a php script that named "
http://www.xxx.com/db_update.php " and excute it by lynx. The command is :
lynx www.xxx.com/db_update.php -dump > /dev/null
and registed in /etc/crontab.

/etc/crontab---------------------------------------------------------------
SHELL=/bin/bash
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
MAILTO=root
HOME=/

05 * * * * root lynx www.xxx.com/db_update.php -dump > /dev/null
===========================================================================

but, instead of running corrctly in specified time, cron mails to root.
contents is this:

" Your terminal lacks the ability to clear the screen or position the
cursor. "

What's the problem? and how can I solve this problem?

and, If you know about other way to running PHP script in apache module, or
refreshing MySQL database in specified time, tell me about it.

I installed Linux (RH6) on an old 486 for testing and tinkering. The thing
doesn't run any applications and just sits there. Every hour the hard drives
will spin up, and it'll go quiet after 15 minutes or so. How can I find out
what is going on during this activity and what modules are REALLY needed for
a machine to be running and how can I not load up those that aren't needed.

Thank you!

The ' linux x86_serial_nr=1 ' parameter to LILO allowed me to boot linux
the whole way up. From what I read, the only permanent fix seems to be to
either recompile the Redhat 6.2 kernel or upgrade to a more current version.
In any event, at least I'm in, and have renewed hope. Thanks again.

Thanks David,
I tested earlier a setup but I used Boot Magic installed on a Win98
setup. Then used Red Hat 6.2 Linux install.
Now when it boots, lilo hangs and when I get Win98 back to boot it
cannot successfully get lilo to load.
Guess I'll have to get rid of BootMagic simehow so that it does not
interfere with lilo.
But I thought BootMagic was supposed to work under these conditions ...

If it's an ide cdrw, then a specially kernel module needs to be loaded
for cdrecord to see it.

I presume by "doesn't see it" you mean that "cdrecord -scanbus"
returns nothing ?

The name of the module that has to be loaded is ide-scsi. See if you
can run the command "insmod ide-scsi" and then see if cdrecord
-scanbus detects it.

If that doesn't work, consult the more detailed instruction in the
CD-Writing HOWTO:

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO-2.html

Go into the Quickstart section and look at the IDE instructions.

If it seems intimidating, consider that I recently installed Mandrake
7.1 on a machine with an IDE CDRW and I was delighted to discover that
it recognized the writer and configured everything for me, so I could
just go straight to work with cdrecord and XCDroast (I think I had to
recompile xcdroast).

You need to give more information -- what error message are you
getting ?

It is likely that your solution involves editing these files:

/etc/xinetd.conf
/etc/hosts.allow
/etc/hosts.deny

I think that man pages exist for each of these files -- for example,
type "man hosts.allow." Basically hosts.allow has to allow the
connection from the appropriate machine, and /etc/xinetd.conf (or
/etc/inetd.conf on older redhats) has to have the line for in.telnetd
uncommented.

Others have posted with similar problems, maybe you can look over the
various answers they got.

Also, consider whether you want to use ssh instead of telnet. It is
easy to install sshd, and you can enable it by adding the line

sshd: ALL

to /etc/hosts.allow

At the LILO: prompt, type

linux x86_serial_nr=1

and you should be able to boot. If you do some searches on "Athlon
CPUID Linux" you will find others who had this problem too, and more
explanation.

After I booted that first time, I recompiled the kernel with a
different cpu level selected, and it would boot without intervention.
I think you can also fix it without recompiling by making lilo append
the "x86_serial_nr=1" automatically.

For what it's worth, Mandrake 7.1 didn't have this problem. I would
suspect the newer redhat doesn't either.

"make" is not part of the C compiler packages, it has its own package
(at least on the older RedHats, haven't inspected 7.0 yet).

So you can find the make rpm on your cds or on the web and install
it. If the compiler isn't there, it will be the "gcc" executable that
is missing.

hour.
Bring up a terminal window and run 'top'

You need to do two things:

First - make sure that APM (advanced power management) is ENABLED in
your BIOS Setup (also called CMOS Setup, or System Configuration, or
System Hardware Configuration) I do not know specifically how to
access the HP Pavilion's BIOS setup, but your User Manual should tell
you how.

Second - set up APMD (advanced power management daemon) to start
automatically in Linux. (probably in one of your rc. files, depending
on which Linux distribution you run.)
Read the APMD man page (man apmd) to find out how to get APMD running.
This will actually interpret the BIOS APMD commands and shut down the
appropriate parts of your hardware, while notifying the appropriate
parts of the Linux software.

Good luck!

What error messages are you getting? You might try:

        startx > /tmp/startx.log 2>&1

to capture the startup errors. 4.0.1 also puts a log in /var/log.

I use 4.0.1 and seem to remember that it does not need or work with the

The only (possible) limit you have, has to do with cyl. 1024
Kernel images are booted from a certain sector address on disc, not from

Please list what you have of IDE equipment.

hdb is the slave on the primary IDE controller. Is this your
