I don't see anything. The motherboard is brand new, ASUS CUSL2. PNP support
is disabled. I had to do that do get it to see the NIC. When I had PnP set
the card was detected and recognized as SBLive but I had no drivers. Now
linux sees the NIC but not the SB card.

$ cat /proc/interrupts
           CPU0
  0: 612278 XT-PIC timer
  1: 4908 XT-PIC keyboard

  5: 109248 XT-PIC aic7xxx, usb-uhci
  8: 1 XT-PIC rtc

 14: 467 XT-PIC DC21041 (eth0)

Maybe I should go into the bios and assign interrupts.

Also, do you know anything about this kgcc BS that is circulating around?
Does it apply to drivers? I am having difficulty compiling the drivers.

thanks for the help.

What do you have installed for libraries, possibly
libcN-compat.blah.blah? ldd is the shared lib info util. What's in
/etc/ld.so.conf? what does ldd /opt/applix/applix say? As root, do
ldconfig. man * :-)

Hi,
Did anyone notice if Netscape is eating up more
disk space as cache than it is asked to use?

$ rpm -q netscape-communicator
netscape-communicator-4.75-0.6.2

$ du -h ~/.netscape/cache/ | tail -1
51M /home/kouzik/.netscape/cache

$ cat ~/.netscape/preferences.js | grep disk_cache_size
user_pref("browser.cache.disk_cache_size", 8192);

$  cat /etc/issue
Red Hat Linux release 6.1 (Cartman)
Kernel 2.2.14-12 on an i686

Anyone has any idea why netscape uses 51M of cache when
I asked it to use 8M? How do I limit this usage?

Thanks in advance,
Kousik.

AFAIK, it has been this way for some time. I use a cron job to delete

Subject: RH7 & Win2K Dual boot Question
Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 22:15:23 -0700

Hi people

I would like to do a Linux Win2k dual boot install and am not quite
sure how to go about it. Here is my setup.

Abit KT7-RAID w/ Thunderbird 700 mhz
128 meg Ram
2 IBM Deskstar ATA100 15 gig drives on IDE 3 & 4 in Raid 0
configuration. IDE3 & IDE4 supports the ATA100 specification. Also
this RAID array has two partiontions on it in which Windows 2000 is
loaded on it.
1 Quantum Fireball LM 30 gig with 3 10 gig partitions on it.

What I would really like to is load Redhat 7 on the 2nd partition of
the RAID array but from my understanding Linux does not support the
HPT370 RAID Hardware. So I would lieke to do is load RH7 on the 1st
partition of my Quantum drive. Is there any way to do this without
loosing my RAID and still be able to do a dual boot?

Any advice would be greatly appriecated.

Thanks

Greg

You shouldn't need to have a /home/[user]/.xinitrc file, the desktop
settings are handled by the .Xclients file. Plus, the default
xinitrc (in /etc/X11/xinit) does some resource setup that you need.

I poked around the files a little more and see a "feature" I hadn't
noticed before (that's not in the docs). The /home/[user]/.Xclients
script redhat is using is a wrapper for starting a different
.Xclients for each different host+display.
My /home/[user]/.Xclients looks like this:

<.Xclients>
# Created by Red Hat Desktop Switcher

if [ -e "$HOME/.Xclients-$HOSTNAME$DISPLAY" ]; then
    exec $HOME/.Xclients-$HOSTNAME$DISPLAY
else
    exec $HOME/.Xclients-default
fi
<.Xclients>

In english, the .Xclients program just runs a script called
.Xclients-default unless you're doing something fancy.
This /home/[user]/.Xclients-default file is the one switchdesk
should be changing.

My .Xclients-default file contains one of these two commands,
(put there by switchdesk) depending on which desktop I've chosen:

exec gnome-session

OR

exec startkde

So all you *should* need is to have one or the other of those
commands in a one line /home/[user]/.Xclients-defaults file.

Is switchdesk changing this file correctly when you select KDE?

Subject: YOUR MESSAGES WILL BE CENSORED Unless you TELL THE FCC to STOP CENSORSHIP &
SPEED CAPPING! Direct Link to FCC HERE! 9757
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 07:27:16 GMT

The merger between AOL & Time Warner will be approved -
BUT - the F.C.C. is going to require some form of open access.
The question is - open access for WHOM? Will the conditions
protect ONLY THE CORPORATIONS or will they also protect YOU
the END USER?

This is what AOL and Time Warner have to say about censorship
and speed capping:

IF TIME WARNER DETERMINES THAT THE SUBSCRIBER HAS FAILED TO
COMPLY WITH THE SERVICE'S STANDARDS OF CONDUCT OR LIMITS ON
BANDWIDTH UTILIZATION, TIME WARNER MAY SUSPEND SUBSCRIBER'S
ACCOUNT. TIME WARNER COMMUNICATIONS SHALL HAVE THE SOLE AND
UNREVIEWABLE RIGHT TO DETERMINE WHETHER CONTENT VIOLATES
THESE STANDARDS.

DID YOU KNOW:

These are the things that Colette Lantelme, Security Administrator
of Road Runner, claims are against the Road Runner Acceptable Use
Policy.

1. Posting a message on any "For Sale" message board.
2. Listing a product on any Ebay, Ubid, or similar service. (Boy, is
    EBAY gonna be PISSED!)
3. Announcing a job availability.
4. Replying to a job availability.
5. Mentioning that the user had tried any product and found
    it satisfactory - or unsatisfactory.
6. Posting a message to any "personals" board.
7. Asking a user for a date.
8. Calling attention to any commercial or non-commercial
website, including personal websites provided as part
of the purchase price of the service sold by Time-Warner.
9. Calling attention to any IRC chat channel.

DID YOU KNOW:

AOL cancelled the account of the President of the Chemically
Disabled Americans - they said it was a commercial usage! The
president ran it from his bedroom. As a public service. His
comment expressing his outrage is contained in the F.C.C. file.

Want to say that Al Gore can't be elected because he is a democrat?
No problem! Want to say that Leiberman can't be elected because he
is Jewish? BANNED FROM AOL!

A very small effort on your part can well induce the F.C.C. to
outlaw this censorship and Speed Capping, and protect YOU as well
as the corporations. You have some powerful allies; Consumer's Union,
Disney, and many commercial software companies. Even the Attorney
General of the State of Connecticut is on YOUR side - you may read
their petitions at the link below.

But YOU MUST HELP!

You can F.I.L.E YOUR C.O.M.M.E.N.T IN THE O.F.F.I.C.I.A.L C.A.S.E FILE!

---> This is NOT merely a EMAIL message which will be ignored <---

Any response which you file will be an OFFICIAL document included in
the F.C.C. FILINGS!
It will appear in the OFFICIAL CASE FILE as a comment
read by ALL THE ATTORNEYS who are participating in the action, as well
as ALL THE F.C.C. C.O.M.M.I.S.S.I.O.N.E.R.S! It will remain there
FOREVER as part of the O.F.F.I.C.I.A.L R.E.C.O.R.D of the AOL - Time
Warner merger! With YOUR name on it!

Since this internet campaign started, approximately 250 comments have
been received by the F.C.C from individuals. (Some are funny as hell!)
We need twice that!

The FCC is on the verge of requiring the protections this letter asks
for. Your letter might PUSH THEM OVER THE EDGE and make the internet
a BETTER PLACE for EVERYONE, INCLUDING YOU!

PLEASE - can you HELP PROTECT IRC and USENET? SEND the SAMPLE COMMENT
to the F.C.C!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO USENET AND IRC! This letter WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
if there are enough of them received by the FCC. If at least 500
letters are received, we can probably count on the FCC to take decisive
action to prohibit both censorship and speed capping - and to protect
the users, not merely the corporations.

GET A CHAIN RESPONSE STARTED! I can do only so much. I can only post
to so many newsgroups - I can't do it alone. WE ALL NEED YOUR HELP!

Copy this message and post it to (at least) 3 newsgroups where it does
not appear! Then, Send this message by EMAIL to (at least) 5 friends!
If everyone does that, we can FLOOD THE F.C.C. with comments and THEY
WILL LISTEN!

The major ccorporations and the politicians are coonducting this merger
on their terms, for their benefit, and giving no thought whatsoever to
the users. They are all fighting over our dollars, but do they give any
concern whatsoever to us? Does a fish ride a bicycle?

They believe that the internet, which WE, not them, made great, is now
too valuable to be left the users. Their attitude is, "let them comment,
they don't count, they are not rich corporations, they are merely poor
users. Will YOU let them get away with this?

They can ignore 250 users. They can't ignore thousands of users.

LET THE F.C.C. know that THE INTERNET DOSEN'T STAND FOR ANY BULL! Tell
the F.C.C. I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!

The future of USENET and IRC depends on the FCC forcing all ISP's
starting with Time Warner and AOL to recognize free speech and fair
marketing practices. PLEASE HELP!

TO FILE YOUR COMMENT WITH THE F.C.C:

1. Copy the letter to a file. You can put it on your letterhead
with MS Word or just use a text file. You can make any change to
the letter you want, or add any comment you have. CHANGES ARE GOOD!
They show you READ THE LETTER and REALLY CARE! If you had a bad
experience with AOL or Time Warner PUT IT IN!

2. go to:

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/websql/prod/ecfs/upload_v2.hts

(This is the official FCC page where electronic filing of petitions
is accomplished)

3. Fill out Cover sheet

Put your name, Address, Email address, and all other required
information on the form. (Remember this is an OFFICIAL FILING so
the FCC requires this information. It is not published unless you
put it in the letter as well as the form)

Proceeding is

             00 - 30

(Leave out the spaces, they are there to get by the spam filter.
Put in the -)

(this is VERY IMPORTANT, it is the case number of the AOL TIME
WARNER APPLICATION for merger. If you get it wrong, your comment
WILL NOT BE FILED!)

4. Send Cover Sheet.

5. After you send the Cover Sheet, THEN select the filename of the
letter you are sending, and send that.

6. After you send the file, you will receive an official
confirmation of the filing from the FCC.

7. You can TYPE a comment instead of sending this sample comment, but
DON'T PASTE THE SAMPLE COMMENT into the Short Comment box - it
DOESN'T FIT!

Comment will appear for all to read in about 4 hours
(but won't appear after business hours or on the weekend.)

8. If you want to see your letter, or read the other submissions,
other letters, the AOL petition, the Disney or Consumer's Union
objections, etc, here is the URL - Its long! Put in the case
number, 00 - 30 (no spaces) and nothing else.

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/websql/prod/ecfs/comsrch_v2.hts?ws_mode=retrieve_list&id_proceeding=00-30&start=1

IF YOU LIVE N A FOREIGN COUNTRY and wish to make a comment (This is a
world wide problem) the Cover Sheet will not accept your address. You
can do this: Enter your real name and address including country in
the address lines, but in the STATE box put CA and in the ZIP (first
field) put 90001. Ignore the 2nd zip field. Ignore the 2nd form, and
TYPE your SHORT COMMENT in the 3rd form. Please identify the country
you live in the message. Don't use the sample letter supplied
because it isn't appropriate for non-US residents.

***>Remember the FORM INFORMATION will NOT appear, only the letter.

NOTE: There is NO WORD WRAPPING on the letter below, to make it
easy for you to format so it may be hard to read until you copy it,
depending on your news reader.

        SAMPLE MESSAGE

============cut here==============================================

To the FCC Commissioners

Ladies and Gentlemen:

The internet is in crisis. Your decision will either save it or guarantee its
destruction as a form a communication for the average citizen.

The internet was designed as a form of communication, not as a tool of commercial
concerns to sell "content" to their subscribers. But to communicate on the internet,
first you must get access to the internet.

You are considering a merger between to two most powerful gatekeepers to the internet.
The question is, will I be able to enter through that gate? And, once there, may I
voice my concerns on important social, political, and even commercial concerns, or
will I be summarily banned because the gatekeeper doesn't approve of what I say?

The rules of AOL and Time Warner are extremely clear; if they do not approve my
speech, I cannot speak. I am not allowed on the internet unless I defer to their
opinion, not voice mine. And, if I decide to use the internet to send data, rather
than merely purchase "content" from Time Warner and AOL, I am again summarily speed
capped or banned from the internet. Their Acceptable Use policy states:

IF TIME WARNER DETERMINES THAT THE SUBSCRIBER HAS FAILED TO COMPLY WITH THE SERVICE'S
STANDARDS OF CONDUCT OR LIMITS ON BANDWIDTH UTILIZATION, TIME WARNER MAY SUSPEND
SUBSCRIBER'S ACCOUNT. TIME WARNER COMMUNICATIONS SHALL HAVE THE SOLE AND UNREVIEWABLE
RIGHT TO DETERMINE WHETHER CONTENT VIOLATES THESE STANDARDS.

Why does Time Warner have the SOLE AND UNREVIEWABLE RIGHT TO DETERMINE WHETHER CONTENT
VIOLATES THEIR STANDARDS? Why can't I post comment based on MY standards, not theirs?
And, when I purchase UNLIMITED SERVICE, why can they then establish bandwith
limitations? Is this unlimited service? Is not a company required to deliver what
the customer pays for?

I regularly correspond with users from many foreign countries. Their ISP's cannot
control their speech. Why does not an American citizen have at least the same freedom
of speech as do the citizens of foreign countries? We taught them the value and power
of freedom of speech. Must they now teach us how to avoid its death at the hands of
commercial mega-corporations concerned only with their sale of "content?"

If AOL and Time Warner are allowed to take over the responsibility of deciding who can
say what to whom, how will you return the internet to its stated purpose of a media of
public discourse? How will you put the genie back in the bottle? How will you
explain to me why my viewpoint is so offensive that I must be barred from the internet?

I sincerely entreat you to consider me, and all other citizen users of the internet.
Please, when you make your decision, insure that I can continue to use the internet,
and specifically that high speed access will not be denied to me based upon the
quantity or content of my speech.

Thank You for your attention.

I have working kernel with my Raid motherboard ( Abit BX-133-RAID) with
two additional ide controllers UATA 100. (from Gentus linux)
With the motherboard I got Gentus Linux which is based on RedHat 6.2
with kernel 2.2.15-3. Kernel from RedHat 7.0 do not work with my ide2
and 3 controllers, but when I add kernell parameters during boot ( linux
ide2=0x8000 etc...) it work but not in UDMA mode therefore speed is 10
times slower.
I decided to adopt Kernel from Gentus to RedHAt 7.0. I installed first
Gentus, than Upgrade to RH 7.0 and then remove kernel 2.2.16 and
replaced with kernel 2.2.15 from Gentus. It is working but I am not sure
if all services will work. Can somebody give me advice how such
procedure should be done.
Please if you know write me email.
